This is the Nikon D80, a 10 megapixel CCD DSLR released back in 2006! Despite its age, which in the technology world feels like decades sometimes, the Nikon D80 still holds its own with amazing CCD sensor image quality and controls. If you're looking for a cheap starter camera, or something to get your creative juices flowing again, look no further.

I have a real soft spot for my D80, it got me back into shooting and my partner and I formed our relationship out shooting; as we both had a D80 each. They sit together on the bookcase, years after. We're getting married next year; and you can bet the D7100 is being left at home for that.

The D70, D50, D60, D80 and D200 are amazing cameras. The D200 is the closest to get if you want a digital F100, it will work with every lens and is built like tank. The smaller D60 cameras are amazing for street photographers and lightweight portrait shots, the CCD colors are amazing and paired with a 35mm 1.8G or 50mm 1.8G or even the 85mm 1.8G these cameras really shine !
@hrpickinstuff
@hrpickinstuff Жыл бұрын
Where the CCD sensors really shine is in bright daylight with a colorful palette that allows the sensor to separate colors. Most cameras do a good job with the primary colors, Red, Blue and Green's but what the CCD sensor does is pick up the yellows, orange, purple's and Brown's and it just seems to pull these colors out front enough for you to notice a difference. It's subtle at first but you will eventually see it when you go back to CMOS sensors but to take advantage of this you need to feed it light. My eye popping moment occurred on a camera roll I shot on the beach on a bright sunny day on vacation. I could not believe what I was able to get with a similar camera its little brother the D50 and a 50 mm 1.8D lens. As the sun set I noticed the camera losing it's magic a bit. That's when I realized. To really get the maximum benefit of the CCD sensor. You need to give it color and light to maximize it's potential. Don't get me wrong it takes tremendous pictures in all light but take it to the pool or Beach. It will bring out both the water, sky and the dynamic range. At 3:45 look at that Blue water in the pool with light hitting it. This is what the CCD does. It eats the Blue' tones for breakfast.

This was my first DSLR. Yes, modern cameras are light years ahead in just about every way, but when it comes to photo quality this still holds its ground. This camera is all most people really need. I'll remind myself I said that the next time I get that "itch" to upgrade. For a few years I sold all of my gear and just used my cellphone. One day I was looking at old photos that I shot with this and that was it; game over. I went back a re-purchased all of my old cameras and them some. The photos I took with this camera + the 50mm f1.8 were in a completely different league than my cellphone. I now have a D1x, D80, D700, D4 (all used on eBay for cheap), and a Z6ii. I shoot with all of them. The older cameras made my photography fun again. They'll also make you realize that the world was just fine without EYE auto focus and 1000fps. For anyone still reading this. I picked up a d80 on eBay for $34, the 50mm manual f1.4 for $45, and the 50mm f1.8g for $78.

Wow you got some good deals and nice cameras specially the D700 and the Z6II. I would love to have that Z6 but it's expensive as heck. I only have a D800 (only full frame I got) and D5300, 2x D3300, D3100, D300. I'm planning to sell most of them and keep only with me the D800, D5300 and a D3300 I sold others : D300 (first example I got), D3200, D800 (before I purchase it again with a good deal)

It was and it is always the man behind the camera, who captures the image, not the equipment. I have this Nikon D80 and 50mm f/1.8D, the same lens this guy used. Additionally I use a circular polarizer. I never had to think about colour correction. If you want to put it straight from camera to web, choose the sRGB profile in the camera, shoot, transfer them to your pc or laptop, if you need to crop it, do it and upload wherever you want. Anybody who is using default sRGB profile in the monitor colour profile, will see the exact result as shown in the camera. And the 10.2 MP CCD sensor which is much sharper than a 10.2 MP CMOS sensor. I think you all know, that companies stopped manufacturing CCD sensors because they need a completely separate factory only for CCD sensors, whereas CMOS sensors can be manufactured in a microchip manufacturing factory. Leave the technical, though D80 lacks the option of videography but it was and still it is a pure still photographers' camera. Those who love only still photography, would love this camera even in 2021. And higher megapixel doesn't mean that the photo would be great. Otherwise many full frame camera still use 12 or 16 MP sensor. I really enjoyed this video in which the photographer really tried to put some sense to those, who are running behind gears. Thanks for this great video. I forgot to mention one very very important aspect of Nikon D80, which is, it has the autofocus motor in body. That means, you can use any older lens which has no autofocus motor in them and still can autofocus if you use this camera. So, if you have this camera, go get some old, cheap but amazing glasses Nikon made for film cameras (SLR) which cannot be used in modern cameras which may be collecting dust in shelves of some old camera shop or in someone's attic. 🙂

while the title might be misleading, the video itself is only judging the camera for its price to performance ratio. While this camera could get cheaper overtime and more cheap options appear, this video still holds relevant to this day.

The double (latter day quad) digit bodies had quite a pushed colourspace. Possibly to make up for pixel count. I always think of the sliders in an editor as shaving a mp at either end. Obviously not every operation will be even partially destructive but some inevitably are. But Saturation and contrast are up there. Triple edit: guess my brain melted.

Compare the D90 with the D80, i own both since 2006 & 2008, after release. D80 @IISO 100 still gives much better colors due to CCD Sensor, the D90 and all D7x00 bodies have a CMOS Sensor , also the D300(s) (12 to 24 MP), and 20 MP (D500, D7500)

My first DSLR was the Nikon D40. I've used the heck out of it, ended up getting a second hand D2X, and a later D80. I ended up gravitating to the D80 because in addition to the more modern lenses, it also works fine with my (rather large) collection of older manual lenses. While I love the D2X, it's much heavier and I didn't end up using any of the extra features the pro camera permits. Sadly, the Nikon D80 has a design flaw. Nikon decided to use a plastic rivet which breaks and gives an ERR message. When this happened to my beloved D80, I ended up buying another on eBay because the cost to repair was more than the cost of a replacement camera. The bulk of the repair is the labor to pull the camera apart.

Before digital there was my Nikon FM-2, which I continued to use after buying an pocked size 6mp Olympus P&S. I went fully digital with a Pentax K10-D around 2005, and added a full frame K-1, just a few months after it’s release. Rarely using film, I nevertheless keep the Nikon in working order; and use both Pentaxes for daily shooting. The 10-D I use for street photos and the K-1 for events, landscape & nature, and what I lightly refer to as “art” photography.

Hi there. Great review. I also own both the D80 and a K10D and I totally agree with your comparison between the two. If I may add for anyone watching this and reading the comments......The D80 has a built in AF motor as opposed the Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx series. This means that every AF lens Nikon has made since the 80's are compatible with this body. Bear in mind these are all full frame so keep the 1.5X crop factor in mind. There are many older Nikon choices to be had including those made by Sigma, Tamron, Tokina. Many that are absolutely capable and budget friendly. Cheers.

My first DSLR was a new D80. I learned so much with that thing. Then it was stolen. I felt like I had an arm cut off, so I bought another. Then it, and this time all my other gear was also stolen. So then I bought a D90. Then a D600 (with a good shutter). Then a D5300 to muck about with old glass. I've tried other stuff, I've tried fancier stuff, there's just something about the utilitarian, power-tool quality to mid-tier Nikon that keeps me coming back, but glad I moved to full frame.

The wedding photography company I was shooting with encouraged me to look at a Nikon with lower noise. At ISO 400 was as high as I would shoot. So I found a used D7000 and it was a wonderful replacement for the D80 that did finally have better color and much lower noise, and huge focusing upgrade.

D200 is a camera that is both still relevant within its limitations and a great starter camera for learning the right way. In good lighting the CCD sensor produces amazing, brilliant colors in the great outdoors and beautiful skin tones in portraits as well. It's also a pro camera with enough flexibility to help new photographers along, but also demanding enough that you need to think about shutter speeds, aperture, and ISO (as limited as it is on this camera). Beyond that, it's built the way camera's should be built and a real testament to the job Nikon did back then. If I give a camera to a beginner, it would almost certainly be the D200, even if I keep using it myself a lot

I became a Nikon film shooter in high school when I became an apprentice to a local pro, and he handed me two beat up Nikon F's and a couple of Non-Ai lenses to shoot sports and wedding receptions with. That was in 1972. I've appreciated Nikon's ruggedness and wide lens selection ever since. I've also learned that you don't necessarily need the latest tech to make good images. I also enjoy Olympus Micro 4/3rds gear and mine was made in 2012. I have two Nikon DSLR's. One is a D7000, a 2010 camera, and a full frame D700 from 2008. I love them both and have no plans to "upgrade" either of them, and routinely shoot photos I can sell with both. I have a lot of really great Nikon manual focus lenses as well as later autofocus glass that always makes it easy to get the shot I want. I have no doubt that a D80 would be just as good.

Even in low light with the ISO boosted you would get lots of noise but it was still pleasing to the eye. The ergonomics of the D80 are amazing, and though I've had Pentax and Olympus cameras pass through my hands since owning the D80, I'm not sure that they fit my hands quite like the D80 did.

(I still own all of my Nikon and Pentax film cameras and manual-focus lenses -- including my mighty Pentax 6x7.) When my cousin asked me to shoot our other cousin's massive surprise birthday party, I looked around for a good deal on an affordable Nikon DSLR. I settled in the D80 and added the 18-70 Nikkor AF lens. I was immediately impressed! After getting such great images at the party (with that wonderfull CCD), I took the plunge and bought two more D80 bodies and two more Nikkor AF zoom lenses (10-24 and 50-300), along with a full set of spare batteries, spare 32 Mb SD cards, new Tiffen UV filters, and Nikon hoods. Including the new, padded aluminum flight case to hold everything, I now have a complete kit to take anywhere and I have only invested about a thousand dollars. What an incredible value!

Today I pulled out my D70 and got some great shots. CCD cams are more film-like than the clean CMOS sensor counterparts. I searched for the last CCD camera out there and came up with Sony's 14Mp CCD α-390. It came out in 2010 and was a consumer model with few but some interesting features like sensor-stabilization (steady shot), a tilting rear screen and live view. It also had 2 card slots although one of them was Sony's Memory Stick Pro Duo :-/ Downsides compared to D80 was/is the very narrow/small view finder and poor battery life. So I went ahead and got one for around $100-$120 with a broken kit lens which I swapped out for Tamron's 18-270mm. This combo is very enjoyable as a travel/street shooter as I can quickly move from wide-angle to the full frame equivalent lens of 405mm. And the steady-shot helps me with getting more keepers.

I agree, CCD sensors do seem more film-like to me as well. I can sometimes detect a CCD sensor image in a blind test, especially if the ISO is a little bit bumped up. I was actually thinking about how the CCD look is a thing in and of itself. A whole generation grew up with family photos being taken on CCD. Not sure if anyone else feels the nostalgia like I do when I see those images.

@@Karhallarn interesting you mention the Olympus e-5 - I just picked up an Olympus e-450 last month and am discovering some good things. I agree about the look of these older cameras. @@snappiness might be. Maybe it also is the absence of technology available. Today every sensor can see in the dark, has lots of megapixels and fast readout. Back in the days, high ISO was difficult, as have been megapixels and people printed more instead of instagramming. That made color, tonality and tone curve response much much more importantly.

This is a good video and makes a lot of sense for someone looking for an affordable camera option in 2022. I would like to point out that the Nikon as you said allows for greater access to affordable lenses and in this area, I would suggest that Ken Rockwell has pertinent reviews of most Nikon glass and points where some exceptionally sharp plasticky (if that is a word) can be found. For those who might be interested in flash photography, I believe Nikon's matrix metering excels. I have had many Nikons before...but I am now in the Pentax camp now with a KP, with a nod to your earlier remarks and images on that camera's performance. Cheers from Victoria, British Columbia. PS I am considering adding the Pentax KD or Olympus Evolt 400 for the CCD sensor, as I like the look from them, too.

I use X100S now since I mostly shoot street photography, but I'm yearning for flexibility again and wanting an ILC again. Comparing DSLR and mirrorless, it's obvious 'going back' to DSLR should be a no brainer in term of price and options. I'm still heavily debating myself though over the decision to stay with my mirrorless or back to DSLR.

I've always thought that if there was no Pentax, I'd probably shoot Nikon. I think I would have been quite happy with a D80 as I've taken many of my best images with K10D. Since then I've owned K20D, K-7 and K-5ii, but despite technical superiority in many ways for the later bodies, I think I may have loved my K10D at the time that it was my best body (my first was *ist DS2) more than any of these. I really enjoyed the way its images looked and it has most of the features we expect out of enthusiast Pentax DSLRs to this day. Had a great build & handling.

Camera Acquisition Disorder. Yep. I'm from back in the film days. My first DLSR was a Nikon D90. Sold the body a few years ago, but I still have the bag, a 50mm 1.8mm G, and the Nikon 55-200mm ED, lenses w/hoods, and a vintage Vivitar zoom with an adapter. Plus a Bower flash and a knock-off of the SC-17 cable. So today on eBay I picked up a D80 body for a little under $100. Naturally, I'm thinking it will be easier to sell a full camera kit than just the lenses, etc. I mean I have a Sony A7RII (grabbed at a steal of a price), 2 Sony a6000s, and an a5000 (neat little camera) with a selection of lenses for the APS-Cs. Oh, then there are the Canon 6D and 7D with Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8, and the 40MM f2.8 STM. With a Sigma MC-11 to run the Tamrons on the Sonys. Almost forgot. An old Canon 20D with battery grip because I like the way it feels more like using an SLR. So yeah, I'm just getting the D80 for selling all the Nikon stuff as a kit. Or so I'm telling myself. I think I need to do some side-by-side comparisons of the different cameras all shooting basically the same scene with approximately the same settings then actually print the images and compare the look of each. I may very well find an aesthetic with the older cameras that harkens back to a more filmic look. Or not. Upsizing with Gigapixel and similar programs you can get some nice larger prints. I had an image that was an Honorable Mention at a curated photo show this past summer. That image was taken on that 12MP D90. The gallery print was 11X14. A person could spend between $100-200 on an older DSLR and lens and if they take the time to learn their gear and their creativity, they can produce some amazing images. People respond to the image, not the gear it was taken with.

Just seen your video right now. I am still shooting my D80, back into 2006, it was no 100 Bucks DSLR, of course, but the 10 MP Class, together with the Sony A100, Canon EOS 40D (but that one came into 2007 - late to the 10 MP Party) among others. Well, my 1st 10 MP Camera was the Sony R1, which i bought into Spring 2006, and still shooting it from time to time. DR from the D80 isn't great, but like all older DSLRs of that time, feat. a CCD Sensor, which makes a Difference, vs CMOS, from through to life colors. I like my D80 @ISO 100 more, than my 2008 D90, or my 2010 D7000 at lowest ISO, all CMOS DX/APS-C Sensors. It's never the Gear, but what you can create with it, get out of it. Even with a disposable Film Camera. /edit: Typo Read the K10D/D80 Review @DPR. My K10D, i would not sell, 1st Pentax with tough Weathersealing into 2006, but Image Quality is really great from RAW. Btw, DT 3.4.0 is being released since Days. :-)

Pentax also has the TAv mode dial setting . Where you set the aperture and shutter speed and the camera picks the iso in the range you pic . Its great sports or wildlife where the lighting can change with the turn of the camera from the light side of a soccer field to the dark shady side . All you have to do is preset your aperture and shutter speed to what you know your going to need for your kid running back and forth on the field and your only job is to aim the focus square on your kid and let the camera do the rest . Some goes for wildlife you pick the aperture and shutter speed and your free to move the camera up to the sky or down to the ground left right and you will always have the right exposure. You can watch the iso change as the lighting changes while your setting you want stay the same how great is that ? Its hard not to get a perfect photo every time . Color Depth 22.7 vs 22.1 higher color depth Dynamic Range , 11.6 vs 11.2 higher dynamic range making the photos from the k10d much better , TVa setting , weather proofing with weather proof lens and shake reduction that makes every lens pentax ever made including the m42 lens a shake reduction lens , wireless external flash , All this vs not having it on the nikon ? Its a no brainer get the Pentax. Unless you already have thousands of dollars in shake reduction nikon lens stay way from nikon and get the Pentax cameras .

I've sold my D80 earlier this year. I was surprised that I got a decent price back for it (mine was in very good condition, CIB). It's still a great camera for its value. You can use the old AF-D lenses with AF on it, which you can't on the D7500 (last DX camera that can do that is the D7200 or D500). The intuitive user interface and controls on this D80 are to a large extend the same as on more recent Nikon DSLR's. The D80 also has scene modes that make photography easy for beginners. It's mainly the screen (not color accurate), slow and quite inaccurate autofocus with only 11 points (for its time it was acceptable), the low resolution sensor, lack of live view and dual card slot that have made me sell it. However, if you are not spoiled like I am with recent DSLR's, then you're probably not going to notice it very soon haha.
