When you think of Olympus, you probably just think about their current mirrorless offerings. But did you know they started in the digital realm like everyone else - with DSLRs? I found an Olympus E-450 sitting lonely on a used camera site, just waiting to be snapped, and took it out for a spin this last month to see how it holds up. I was pleasantly surprised.
I also picked up my first Olympus mirrorless camera recently - an EPL2. Or something like that. I'm excited to try it out. I even bought an adapter with aperture control for some vintage lenses. Should be fun.

In 2004 i bought my Olympus E1 and a volvo v70 d5 both new. Today i still use the camera as my only camera and the volvo as my daily car. Both still going strong and i see no reason to change either. I have no idea what shutter count is on my camera but may get it checked one day but the car has 174k miles on it. Both great design great build quality and both relentless

My main digital camera is a Olympus E-620. Yep, a 4/3 DSLR. I got it from my dad when he bought a new camera. It has everything that snappines outlined: awesome sensor, great form factor, great ergonomics, etc. What I love about this camera is that it *just works*. Sure, its 14 years old. But even compared to today's DSLRs (or lack there of) I'd say it's still a solid camera. In addition, the Zuiko 12-60mm Lens I have with it has probably the fastest, most reliable auto focus I have ever seen. It's practically instant, and in the thousands of photos I've shot with that camera, maybe like 10 were out of focus. In a way, I hope it is the last DSLR I will ever own. I'd go as far as to say it's almost a perfect digital camera. Now that most of my photography that I do for fun is on film, it's nice to know I can pick up the Olympus for whatever I may need, and it just works. It's sad to know that Olympus isn't the company it once was, and that DSLR's as a whole are on their way out. In a way, I'd say this is a film SLR but with a digital sensor and all the convinces that come with that. I feel it provides an alternative to today's cameras with high-pixel density view finders, and crazy AI powered features. At the end of the day, it's simply a small, compact, and reliable DSLR, and not much more. And I like that.

My dad picked a e510 and 50 f2 macro from a garage sale not long ago. I gave it a go, I normally shoot full frame nowadays but I used d40, k10d and d90 before. This little thing is way better than I remembered when I operate the aforementioned 3 cameras. The OS is smooth, the IS is actually working, compare to what I remembered from my K10D. And the color requires very little work in post. Not sure I am good at shooting pictures or it is actually a better camera. Anyway I enjoyed it a lot, it's a keeper. I do have to admit, when I use D40, D90 and K10Ds, I do not have a masterpiece like this 50 F2 Macro.

The E5 is my main camera with the E450 as a backup. But I like the smaller form factor of the 450 and use it quite often. If your going to use these cameras long term, you need to find parts like the doors and such for repairs. Even cheep parts bodies will help. I started using gaffers tape to prevent damage to the memory door and any surface that needs protection. Tape is easy to remove and easy to replace, more so than a new door. If you need low light on occasion, get a couple of flash units they are cheep. I know it may be a bit petty, but I also tape over any Olympus branding on the cam and lens. That way guys don’t give me s**t as to why I’m not using x-brand. It is really funny when guys are trying to get a look at what I’m shooting with and I tell them it’s an older camera that needs tape and leave it at that, hahaha. Thanks for the video Bill

@@snappiness good idea on the deals! Any pro lens is good to go. And the 25 is fun to play with. What I keep is the 12 - 60mm zoom on the E450 and the 14 x 35 mm zoom on the E-5. In the go bag I keep the 7 - 14mm wide angle and 50 - 200 mm telephoto zooms with a x2 doubler (just in case) This handles just about every thing except macro’s. Thanks, Bill

I have an e-410 that I've had for over 11 years. I took it on a trip to South America in 2010 and recorded some wonderful memories with it. Also was able to use old Nikkor AIS lenses on it in addition to the kit and pancake lenses. Don't use it much these days, but use the Olympus om-d e-m5 as my compact system. I also shoot Nikon film and digital SLRs. The Olympus cameras are great for hiking trips and any occasion were you want a compact setup.

I have an Olympus E1 and E500 and they both have Kodak sensors, take the same batteries, and can be used with the VA-1 right angle finder. It took awhile to figure out their best qualities, and I found that if I kept to base ISO, made a custom white balance, and then dial down the colour saturation, contrast and sharpness, it started to work for me. These particular cameras have a limited dynamic range of around 8 stops and if the scene matches that range, it becomes quite magical and painterly. Add a 1/8th black mist filter to give a bit of bleed into the shadows … well, now you know.

I always had a sweet spot for Olympus cameras and leneses, eventhough just owing a e600 for a short time back in the day just prior to moving Samsung Mirrorless. After Samsung gave up an E-3 was in the ball park when choosing a new camera, loved it but made the conservativ decision and went 5D, than sold 5D; thoug about E-3 again and nearly picked it up, than made the conservative decision and went all out D750. Now I had the opportunity to supplement my D750 with an E-5 and 12-60 and 50-200 lenses and since I got that about four months ago, my Nikon left the shelf thrice for very low light but hasn't been used else.... I love the E-5 and the lenses and as a huge bonus for me, I dont have to care for the weather at all when out with the kids. THe Olympus just works and works and works and produces super sharp images with very special colours on a reliable basis! I'm not sure how long the D750 has a reason to stay...

I bought my first used camera in July 2020, the Olympus E-410 with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f-4-0/5-6 for 80 euros. I took some stunning images, after that it was impossible to use my phone because I loved the feeling of a camera in my hands. The camera despite it's age, felt amazingly good, and together with those sharp lens I've had tons of fun! But unfortunately because the mount didn't have much available lens I went with Nikon D3400, now using the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM for wildlife photography. But without that camera, I could never realize my love for photography, I'm so thankful for that, so I didn't want to keep it somewhere closed, I got it up for sale, and somebody wanted to give it for a present, I guess another future photographer is on its way.

Sorry for being late. I had a E-450 kit with two lenses, but sold it to get the E-420 "Komachi" Limited Edition with leather ERC, matching leather strap. and the 25mm lens, as mentioned in the webpage seen at 4:32, which only shows the bottom half of the ERC. I it was the way cameras were used by most people back then: with a standard lens in its ERC when out and about. I found the 25mm lens to be more than adequate, even though its optical configuration is over complex to my eyes. I couldn't help wondering how it would be if Olympus used a Cooke Triplet or Tessar type configuration to give that unique imaging signature, but then it would make it an odd man out in the lens line-up. Admittedly my E-420 chews through batteries which made me suspect that the batteries were about to expire, but they turned out to be just fine when used in newer cameras that take them. So it is more likely that there is an issue with the electrics inside.

Olyumpus' color science is, to my eye, great - up there with Pentax. I picked up a E-M10MarkII last year while I was waiting for a Pentax KP price drop (which never came), and I fell for it immediately. You nailed it about the ergonomics. It's amazing just how comfortable they manage to make these compact cameras feel in the hand. And that's another way they work for a Pentax user (we love our grips and button layouts!). I've never managed to warm to Sony or even Fuji cameras because they've never felt all that comfortable to me, as much as I admired them in other regards. It doesn't seem like enough people feel that way though, because Olympus have been sold on, and Pentax were sold on twice. That might have something to do with them sinking more money into innovative features, materials and craftsmanship than they do on headline specs and marketing, though.

Panasonic GF2 (sold), Olympus OM-D E-M5 (sold), and currently Olympus PEN-EP5 and OM-D E-M5 Mark II. Great compact cameras - I use them with the M.Zuiko Premium lenses (12/2, 17/1.8 and 75/1.8).

Do you ever adapt your Pentax glass to those mirrorless bodies? I bought an adapter with aperture control to try out on my EPL2 I teased in the video. Should be good fun. In the past I had a GH3 for video. Worked nicely. If I get going enough on here again to justify a dedicated video camera, I'll probably pick one up again.

@@snappiness I have adapted my DA Limited lenses (no aperture ring) to Fuji X with an adapter with aperture control (K&F Concept) and that works fine. Not as good as a proper aperture ring, but still fully usable. For micro four thirds I only have adapter without aperture control, but I also have some older K-mount with aperture ring (FA Limited ❤️)

My first serious entry into photography was the Oly E-500, which is actually a step or two down from this one (8MP and no live view). It was great to learn on, but I quickly outgrew it and now my kids use it. I shoot a lot of low light, which just didn't work out well with it. As a general purpose camera in good lighting, it did perform well. Also may look into those CF to SD card adaptors. I didn't know those existed, and I think the USB port on my camera is a little lose because it sometimes has connection issues. Thanks for the tip.

An Olympus E-400 was the first DSLR I bought - when it first came out - and have shot some great photos on it. Photos have a pleasing soft warmth to them. I remember the Nikon D70, a Canon and a Pentax were other considerations at the time. Relating your review to the E-400, I thought your summary was quite true, although I found the 14-42 kit lens to be very good - albeit slow. The lack of fast primes was however, frustrating. I still use it now, as a complementary part of my kit... more for landscape, street scene and architecture.

@@snappiness yes, I still use the 14-42 kit lens. I’ve had and sold the wider zoom, 9-18mm F4.0-5.6 Zuiko lens too. It’s performance was very similar - good image quality, but you need good light for the autofocus. Sigma brought out some fast primes, but they were big, heavy and expensive. The Zuiko SWD lenses would be interesting to try. However, there doesn’t seem to be many second hand four thirds lenses around anymore.

Wait what, can you tell me some more aboit about this. I have a olympus 420e, i use it for macro phtography, but the best lens you can get for this old model is the 50mm macro lens. Newer olympus model cameras can mount 60mm and even 100 mm macro lenses. What do you mean by adaptar? and would i be able to mount a newer 100mm macro lens to my 420e?
@VWLivin
@VWLivin Жыл бұрын
@@Philip-tp6fz There are quite a few lens adapters out there for the original 4/3 system. You just have to do your homework and find them, making sure to not accidently get one for Micro 4/3. That's the real issue, is that most internet searches automatically default to the M4/3 mount and not the original 4/3 mount. However, they are out there. For what you are asking, using a more modern M4/3 lens onto an origianl 4/3 camera body, I don't believe that's possible. There are lots of vintage Macro lenses by Nikon, Pentax, etc. that you could adapt to your E420 body.

Olympus DSLR's were not smaller or lighter than their competition and additionally handicapped by their small sensor. This lead to paradox situations when a chunky "professional" camera like Olympus E-5 offered visibly worse image quality than entry level, smaller and much cheaper Canon 550d, 500d or even ancient 450d. That is the main reason why Olympus moved to m4/3 mirrorless system. It was impossible for them to compete is DSLR market.
