Thanks for the concise explanation!! If I do this to set my sd card as internal storage though, would I not be able to remove it after? Could I possibly lose files that way? I got an sd card for my laptop but it sticks out of the side of it and I'd like to be able to remove it to prevent any accidents

This method is meant to be permanently on board the computer at all times. If you remove it, it will most likely detele the files and it could corrupt your sd card if removed multiple times.

I need more storage on my C drive to update windows 10 on my laptop, since external drive storage can’t do everything. Will doing this allow me to be able to use only the USB drive storage and not need to free up space on my C drive?

This method will not let you do that. Windows does have a prompt to let you use a USB drive to finish getting the reminder of the update downloaded but it has to give you the option. It usually does it once it attempts to update a few times and it can’t due to not enough storage.

I was setting up a path and creating an index so when I needed to save a file in system storage (in my case at the time cloud storgae programs wouldn’t let me save on a external source) this was a work around. I think now cloud storage systems don’t give you that problem. One thing to mention is this doesn’t work for every type of file it just expands the option on saving for more programs.

I would say it is probably the way it is formatted, or it could be that it is corrupted and a reformat could get it in order. One last thing is that sometimes micro sd cards don't play nice with certain systems in my experience I've had issues sometimes with PNY. I hope that helps.

This method requires that you do not remove the sd card. If you do you would have to do this all over again and it could mess up your files currently on the card.

Yes, but certain apps still don’t read it as permanent storage. In my case I did this for google drive because it only wants to use on board storage of the device but I want to use the micro sd card.

it just give a short-cut to SD card. Can not use SDcard as internal storage! Some software auto install on C: and you can not force them install to SD card!

My bad on the late reply. So the shorcut is used to create a way for the the OS to install some thing like a cloud service on the sd card. At least that’s why I originally did it. Other programs worked as well but I didn’t try many. In the end some programs will just not allow it in any form.

Sadly no, it requires system storage only. It can't take any external storage.

I’d say no for most computers but the only time it worked for me was not through this method. I downloaded on an micro sd card and I placed it in the machine. Once I was done I had to remove it.

So assuming the you did the long process (mounting as permanent storage) that should help you with most items that you download but not all, like system OS downloads. If you did the simple way, that only works on most apps/programs, and files (docs, pics, vids, and music). One of the methods should help but there are some items out there that refuse to recognize external storage no matter what method you use. Sorry if it wasn't much help.
