Hello, welcome back! I get asked a lot of questions about cycle computers. One of the most common is...can’t you just use a phone? In today’s vlog I chat about when they are good/bad. If you want to use your phone as a cycling computer you would probably prefer it to be mounted to the bike...so something you’ll need is the Quad Lock phone case and bike mount, genuinely an awesome bit of kit!

Phone over a cycling computer all day ever day mate! Strava with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor lets you do any training you want. I commute 3 hours a day by bike and don't have any probs with the battery, if you're having battery issues you probably need a new phone! Awesome vid mate!

Completely agree. My iPhone 12 is a couple of years old and still lasts 4 hours on a ride from fully charged. I never usually do rides that long without stopping somewhere in which case I can bring a small external battery to charge it.

Totally agree, once you use a bike computer you understand why people buy them. Can go off on a 5hr ride , and bike computer will still have lots of battery left showing your routeand connected to your sensors. Try that with a phone and it will just drain or overheat in summer (tried with a phone with 4000mha battery even that didn’t last on a 2hr ride)

The amount of time I spend on my phone, using my phone to track rides as well my battery would be none existent... thats the main reason I use a bike computer and you don't have to worry about them when the weather is terrible but do like the quad mount for Zwift looks like a great bit of kit may invest....

For navigation only, so far my phone still beats any cycle computer. Simply because the screen is so much bigger and sharper. Used to have a Garmin but now I use a Sigma Rox 12.0 for my training. But for navigation a certain route I much prefer apps like Naviki on my smartphone. I use a small bag on my top tube specially designed for holding a smartphone. Enough space in the bag to add a power bank so I have extra power to last forever.

For me it depends on what I'm doing. 95% of the time it's just phone in pocket with strava on. If I'm really training, my go to is my shanren Di Pro, I really just need it for the speed, recording gps and hear rate.

Like a lot of other avid cyclists here, I have also been using quad locks on my bikes for years now. Very useful and handy. Nevertheless, the GPS on the phone uses up energy quite fast and your phone battery will die in no time, especially if you ride using the step by step feature on Ride with GPS for example. That being said, owning both a phone and a bike computer is the way to go if your budget permits it. Thanks Dave!

Strava is enough for me, I can see over time if I'm faster over 100s of different segments that I know! I'm not a professional and never will be, and I just dont get amateurs stressing over power meters and all that mumbo jumbo, you are all probably retired lawyers with too much money and time on your hands!? Vo2, Threshold, normalised power, actual ,tempo, zone 123, functional threshold, RPE, Watts, HRT zones, blah blah blah. Well nobody had P/meters when we were kids, and now you got some money you wanna know why you are slower, well its cause you are older, and no longer a fit young child who rode for fun, remember those days? lifes too short

The one piece of advice I have about using a Quad Lock on your bar or stem is if you’re attaching your phone whilst riding, it is worth giving the phone a pull after you’ve clipped it in to make sure it’s secure. I have managed to clip my phone in at the top whilst the bottom of the phone was not locked in place - my fault entirely but a valuable lesson learned!

I've used QuadLock since they first came out and swear by their grip. Have hammered down rutty bridleways on my MTB and it just doesn't budge. I used to use a phone to track, but battery life of a proper bike computer can't really be matched, and now the phone mount is mainly to keep the phone close at hand and out of my pockets.

I use a phone. On a quad lock in front. For about 3 year an 10000 miles now. Why? Because i am too cheap to buy and maintain another device. Benefits of a phone - cost saving. Better, bigger screen. Drawbacks - Rain! Battery life can be an issue but not too bad. I use it primarily for navigation, leading rides.

I'm working on getting the Garmin EPIX Sapphire watch. I can't really find the bike computer I want. My Edge 830 is getting worn and the battery is barely lasting 4 hours now. I don't like the new Garmin 40 series computers. Bike computers are really difficult to pick because I want Di2 compatibility, size matters, and no touchscreen again. The watch seems to be the way to go because it will work with the Garmin Vision which I already have. Hopefully it will work with my Radar also. The Vision display is right in front of your eye where you don't have to look down at the computer and since I'm older the computers are hard for me to see so I tend to move closer to the screen for longer times which is unsafe. Even though I always have my phone with me I don't want to use it as a bike computer and would rather just keep it in my pocket.

People don't know how lucky there are these days... When I were a lad there were no such things as computers. The first bit of 'technology' I had was a speedometer that was a dial and had a cable connected to a wheel that rubbed around my front wheel dynamo style. These days, Garmin all the time, I can only just about cope with riding to the end of the road and back to test setups without putting my Garmin on. Never used my phone, never will, I worry about it stuck out in front just feel it's going to get smashed but I don't even think about a cycling computer, I guess because that's what its for.

Fair Play Dave 👍 Informative vlog today 👍 I’ve used Garmin for years just got fed up of them fuc king up losing battery life / telling you to turn around etc Then now use wahoo good to be fair. Love ❤️ all data out in front so to use phone which I tried at first in top tube bag with phone compartment on the top Like you found kept going off on sleep mode and would totally drain battery and in the rain your phone would probably ring someone at work when your supposed to be Ill 😷 not riding 😂 😂 😂 Phones are expensive but so are bike computers maybe not so much now well no £250/£300 still a lot of money So for the price then maybe us as cyclists should expect more reliably and for them to work correctly But when you talk to other cyclists we expect them to play up and not work sometimes WHY do we / I do this For new cyclists it’s so frustrating when you spend that much and it not work. Rant over 😅🥲🥲 Happy cycling Dave / All 😎

I’ve used a Cateye Velo 7 wired computer since 2012 with no issues, it’s even on the original battery! Recently the wire lost connection, so I replaced it with the MTB wire which is much thicker and sturdier. When I finish my ride I take pictures of each screen (TM, DST, AV, MX, ODO) with my iPhone and use PhotoGrid to make a collage picture of the screens, plus I can add titles of where and when it was. As someone else has already posted: “I ride, I don’t train” - yup me too, my iPhone gives access to maps, therefore the Wahoo etc would be overkill for me. I may try Strava one day, but if it’s a big battery drain I’m not interested. Oh and if you’re cold on the bike try a Buffalo Cycle Shirt www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/cycle-shirt/

I tried using this setup. It just doesn't work that well in bright sunny days. Could hardly see the screen of my phone. Also since most phones these days are OLED, the numbers on the screen started burning in. Not surprisingly since the phone has to be max brightness. Battery life of the phone also diminished rather quickly. It kind of made my sensors(power, cadence, speed and hr) kind of useless since I could hardly see them on screen, which made them only uselful post ride. Now I got a simple garmin edge 130 plus, now I could see my data number crystal clear in bright sunny days. It's like e-ink of an ebook.

For everyone except avid cyclists who ride almost everyday, a phone is THE way to go. Convenient, easy, and pretty cheap. Use a cheap cycle computer for stats and your phone for navigation. Vibrations can eventually damage your phone’s camera. Beware. I won’t use my good phone for off-road riding, only a beater. Plus Quadlock, although secure, isn’t a very comfortable case to use (big bulge), so you’re better off using it on your old phone imho. If you’re a bicycle tourer like me, a proper vibration dampening case is essential, and a bit worse than a used garmin.

I would use one but I do not want to run down my phone so I would get a cycle computer.

The GoPro mount and clear phone protector are optional extras. Does anyone know if you can fit a light to the mount?

Yes, there are many lights and adapters that attach to a GoPro mount. It has become a de facto mounting standard

Used my phone for a year, in my pocket first, then on a silicon mount. No problem with battery life (close everything, close WiFi etc). But, I just bought a Bryton! It's great, smaller, neater, and less of a worry. It takes time to find out everything that the Bryton can do (everything) but it just gets better and better! In retrospect a good out front mount would have done it, like a quad lock, but phones are just too large and expensive out front, so given the choice, I would have both! Cheers Dave!

This is more of a commerical for quad lock than about the app itself. kinda fail right?

Bit of both mate 😂 you can use any mount for your phone…I just talk about quad lock as they are a channel sponsor. The end result is the same…just a bit of fun.

Dave, Please have a look at IpBike for Android phones, it's easy to find on Google Play. It's incredibly powerful, pairs with a wide variety of sensors, logs more info than I can decipher, hooks into and uploads to many of the on line, Strava type services, data display is fully customizable and it includes the ability to use off line maps. There's great support via online help files and a user forum. IpBike is so good it deserves a full review. Can you find any bike computer function it doesn't support? The key needed after 1 million wheel revolutions is $7.99 USD as of this writing, You'll need to add IpSensorMan at no additional charge and you'll possibly want IpWatts as well if you'd like to compare multiple power meter sensors. Sorry, I had to delete all links as this comment doesn't show with them included. - -D'vivre

Hey there, just saw your video - I personally don't do racing so I have a top tube saddle bag with a transparent cover and an additional battery pack. Total cost about 40 bucks. Is it heavy? Yes. Buuut I claim it's extra training ;)

I'm a casual bike rider using it to commute but also for some training. Nothing crazy, just some rides in high intensity, I don't have a power meter, just a heart rate monitor. I'm using my phone to record my data and it works perfectly fine, I have a suspicion that my GPS on my phone is a bit off but I don't care that much as long as it's 95% correct. I've considered buying Quadlock or SP Connect but neither makes cases for my phone. I have to buy another case and use their generic holder which I'm a bit hesitant about the glue durability. Another reason I don't have a bike mount is that my cellphone's battery with GPS and Bluetooth enabled will die pretty quickly, and how am I going to take Instagram photos :D :D Also, when it's raining even slightly it's not a option. I'm putting my phone in my pocket and it works OK. Disadvantages is that obviously I don't have live feed of my speed, heart rate etc. A big bummer though is the lack of navigation. During summer when I go out in the wild I stop every few meters checking the map - yes my orientation abilities are not existent :) All in all, yes it definitely works having your cellphone as a bike computer, even in your pocket. I'm saving some money though to buy a dedicated unit...

Hmmm. Not for me. I used to use Strava on my phone before I bought a cycle computer. My battery always died so you lose your ride data & can't contact anyone if you're in trouble. I find a phone screen too small for Zwift, currently using an iPad with a Tacx tablet handlebar mount. I guess the quad lock mount is an ok option for those that don't have tablets or laptops for running Zwift though.

Strava on your phone + a $20 Anker power bank and you're set. I ditched a computer when I realized that I still needed everything else (phone anyway, heart rate monitor, sensors, etc...). Now, all I use is a thin wrist worn heart rate monitor paired to the phone and I have a small power bank for anything more than a 3 hour ride that triples my time (3 full phone recharges).

I used my phone with a Garmin mount adapter on my handlebars for a 30 mile off-road ride and the phone was literally rattled into electronic dementia, had to throw it away, don't do what I did.... I use the cycle streets app for back up navigation to the Garmin, it's free and you can download the UK map for free so if you lose signal it still works

Dave defo computer, phone is just too big on your bars. OK in your pocket. If you think about it your phone has your whole life on them now. Bike computers are better they have all the data you need on them. Hands up for going out in this weather bugger that turbo training at the mo 👏👏👏👏👍
