First use, Parting off, I should have started by facing off a bit of bar as I think its shown its worst features. That and the tools I bought seemed a bit soft

When parting off, keep the pressure on. Don't keep backing out.

@@motobrikerestorations1354 It's the backing of that does the damage.

@@motobrikerestorations1354 Tool geometry can make you love it. I was the same way then i started playing with top geometry. A "U" shape on the top of the tool decreses your overall tool pressure and a lead or trailing angle on the tool tip itself also decreases overall tool pressure. Makes parting almost asmr joy feels.

I'm looking into getting a small lathe, my first lathe of any kind. So forgive if this isn't the smartest question, but can you replace the tool holder with one that is adjustable for height. I don't know if I have the skill level to shim the tool like you did but if I could adjust the height in tiny increments, it would be easy to get the tool centered accurately.
@motobrikerestorations1354 Жыл бұрын
Thats a great question. And the poor answer is maybe. There are designs where teh tool fits ina holder that fits ina solt on the tool stock and then can be raised and lowered using a screw thread on the top. You can then have seneral tools in these tool holders making swop out really quick. Have a go at shimming. I probably made it look difficult but once you have done it once its really easy and you have the shims already cut.

@@motobrikerestorations1354 Thanks man. What do you use for shim stock? Just some thin sheet metal?

I went to make some bushing.... then found the issue with the vibration. The tail stock 2mm higher than the head stock centreline. This the parting tools where set above centreline. I only realised this when I started to make bushing. This was real, it was axially parallel and there is no adjustment. I have rough filed the bottom of the tail stock and got it to about .5mm just good enough to allow me to make the bushing which I was in a rush for. I am now going to take mu time ang/e get the last .5mm.

Good video, have you been able to find a four jaw independent chuck for your lathe?
@colincrooky Жыл бұрын
Aw I’m disappointed, I was expecting to see some turning. I think (I’m not an expert but…) trying to turn a cylinder is harder than a bar and if it vibrated then it must be the chuck thingy. Could you try the 1960’s way of wheel balancing to do it? I think I am older than you but they are probably on KZbin. Many thanks for your valiant effort and I will watch this space.

In the video on completing the gt550 sea I make some seat pins which it worked very well. I have used it quite a few times now and its all been fine. The vibration I think is related to the small physical size rather than any particular imbalance as running it without cutting its not noticeable. Still glad I bought it, i think my concerns were mainly related to having been used to the big industrial machines you find on a ship.

@@motobrikerestorations1354 Of course, the ones you used on a ship would have purred it would be like me going back to my Mini I had in my 20’s it was terrible.😂 I may consider one though. Thank you for letting me know.

@@colincrooky Well may be not purred... There are some cracking youtube contributors who know a lot more than I do about this. Please check them out. I have paid off my last kid with the house deposit to leave home so, as well as fending off the wifes empty nest syndrome, I am setting up for retirement. A lathe was on my wish list for several years and it took best part of a year looking at the market, feedback from buyers, feedback on seller, before I bit the bullet and bought this. If I were to pint to the best thing bought in my workshop... it would be the adjustable stool...

@@motobrikerestorations1354 They used to say that bringing up a child was a 18 year project. Do not believe it especially if you are good at DIY - My daughter is in her 40’s and tomorrow I am going through to her house (and husband’s ) to fix two leaks (drips). I have trained my son in law in DIY but it’s a long apprenticeship, don’t get me wrong I rather enjoy doing it especially as I may reap the benefit when I cannot do much anymore. At the moment my ‘lathe’ is two bench grinders, a pillar drill (short) and emery cloth. A real lathe has been on my list for as long as I remember but recently I am building an electric wheelbarrow so I am waiting for this to be completed but I keep dismantling it to change the design - If I stop working I cannot sleep, fortunately I’m never happier unless I am doing so.

you can buy shim steel but I have old bits of sheet saved from things like fridge sides

Quick update. I have tried facing off using tip tools and its better than my first impression. Vibration is still a problem affecting the final finish but its fine, parting off was a bit of a baptism of fire especially given the quality of the tools. . I think ipart of the problem may be how its mounted ( just a single bolt fore and aft) so I will do some work on that. Overall at the 700gbp its fine, The power controller card doesnt look very robust and unfortunately the speed does drop with load so they are areas I will look to improve over time.
