from an old carpenter...when you are hitting a piece of wood {trim) or some piece that will show.. don't hit it with the hammer...use a piece of scrap and put it between the hammer head and the board you are adjusting.. this will protect the trim from all those ugly hammer head dents on what you will see. :)

If you still have the ice on the paths a trick to get it to melt faster without needing salt or chemicals is a simple mattock, sledge hammer or even a maul to go along the ice and break into smaller chunks to increase the surface area the warmer temps can attack it. When Ice is a sheet you reduce where the temperatures can melt it from to the top and edges. No need to go digging to get under the ice just some good solid hits from above to break the sheet into parts and simply let the above melting temperatures do the rest for you. Have you thought about getting a few turkey to roam the pasture for thanksgiving next year?

If you sprinkle a bit of ash from the woodstove on the ice. It’s dark and promotes solar gain to melt ice. It adds grip to the ice to prevent slipping. ❄️ Caution if you use it near the house be careful toe black in the house.
