LOL, Thank You for leaving in the more interesting parts of your build. Over 50 years of building electronic projects with (metal, wood, 3D printed) mechanical parts has been loads of fun. Glad to see my "interesting" builds are done by everyone.

Great video, really enjoyed this 🤗 I'm in the middle of a project myself that has had plenty of fun "oh no" moments so it's always reassuring to see other people dig their way out of their own holes 😉

Nice project. The LED's in the wood is a great touch. I'll definitely use that in the future.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed! I'm pretty happy with how the LEDs turned out, especially since I didn't know going in if it was going to work.

3:24 drilling holes for the LEDs but not quite all the way through. Instead of drilling "almost" all the way through, drill through and then add a thin layer of balsa wood or wood -vernier-. Edit: should be "wood veneer"
@MakeFunStuff
@MakeFunStuff 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about that after the fact, and that's definitely what I would do if I were to make more if these (as long as I could find a piece of wood thin enough). Good idea!

@@MakeFunStuff Finally the y/t algorithm did something right ;) The 2 videos I've seen are very nice. The effort you take to make the project and to ALSO make the video must be a lot. I appreciate the "errors" that you included. They give newbies a little more understanding that not all projects run perfectly smooth but that it is possible to recover from the errors. For me, already having made similar errors, I has a few "yep, BTDT" moments. I have more praise to heap, but I think I'll spread it around some of the other videos I've yet to watch.

If you stretch copper wire it get stiffer, if you are thinking about using solid copper wire again.

add 2 seven-segment LEDs to show actual temp.

Maybe use an ultrasonic or optical proximity sensor instead of a switch. Next time.
@MakeFunStuff
@MakeFunStuff 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about that, but using a switch that controls power to the Arduino means there's no power draw at all when it isn't being used, so the battery ends up lasting a really long time. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Placing the sensor directly up isn't too smart. The steam from the drink will moist and damage it over time.
@MakeFunStuff
@MakeFunStuff 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I thought about that, I even considered including a small fan to redirect the steam, but in the end I kept it this way because I figured the damage would be slow, it'd be pretty easy to replace the sensor or brass if they became too damaged, and most importantly I liked how it looked with the sensor hanging over the drink. I also wanted to measure the temperature of the liquid directly instead of the temperature of the mug to avoid getting different readings depending on the insulation of different mugs. But I appreciate the feedback, hope you enjoyed the video!
@Jakub1989YTb
@Jakub1989YTb 3 жыл бұрын
@@MakeFunStuff I enjoyed it a lot. Especially the brasswork 🙂 I was thinking about making the tower smaller, and angling the sensor by 45 to aim it at the liquid, maybe adding a small shroud to it to make it more directional. But overall super idea.
@MakeFunStuff
@MakeFunStuff 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! I think that approach would be great, but I'd want a sensor with a narrower field of view since this one is 90 degrees and angling it would probably increase how much of it's field of view is not covered by the cup. But that's already a problem with the current design anyway, it's just reduced a bit by being centered close over the top of the mug. But definitely a good idea, and if I ever find a narrower FOV sensor that I still think looks cool I might give it a try!
