All I use are Canon FD lenses. I shoot with the 24mm, 50mm, 50mm macro, 135mm, 300mm. I'm using the Z-cam E2C. The footage is so much more pleasant to work with in post production than these modern lenses.

Congrats! I love my p4ks. Amazing little cameras. I really like the FD on the p4k. its a great pairing, and they are fairly easy and inexpensive to come by. The biggest expense is the metabones speedbooster, but if you plan on using a lot of FD lenses I think its worth it.

Jose Carlos Vazquez just depends on the lens. I really liked the look of the bpm on the 50-300L...but for majority of vintage lenses I use I don’t use the bpm. As far as the adapter pretty much all the FD to Ef adapters trash the image. Best route is to do a conversion

Dil ki Baat official thanks! Really the only good way to use the FD with an EF adapter like the xl is to convert the FD to EF. Because the FD lenses were original created for 35mm tho, a converted FD wouldn’t vignette at all

hitachiman I do have a couple of basic color grading videos on my page but plan on doing a more in depth video soon. I haven’t had a chance to try any of the sc or ssc FD lenses yet. I don’t think there’s much of an optical difference tho between the ssc and nfd it’s more just in the build, as the ssc are more robust and built with less plastic

That’s a really tough call there’s so many good ones. I think for me I would choose my 20-35L as it’s really versatile and then maybe an 85. 85 L If you have the budget. 85 1.8 if not

Great video! Gorgeous Footage. I've been using Canon FD lenses on my GH5s almost exclusively just like you have with your BMPCC4K. I loved the footage you shot with the 50-300mm f/4 L. I've been thinking about picking one up myself. I was wondering if you could tell me more about how you shoot with that particular lens. Do you attach the lens directly to a more heavy duty tripod due to it's weight? How smooth is the zoom on that lens? You mentioned follow focus. Has your copy been cine-modded? Thanks!

Its pretty large and heavy so I typically use it with a standard 501 type manfrotto tripod. It will work ok with just a plate attached to the collar lock, but it is a bit shaky in the longer lengths. I use it with a rail rig, and a lens support, and follow focus. This has def helped smooth it out a bit, but Im still getting a little micro shaking, and I think its because of the play of the metabones adapter. I think I'm going to need to get something to lock that to the rails for it to be perfect. My gears are also a little tight, so that could be a factor. As far as image goes though, from about 100-300 its really my favorite image of anything I shoot, especially paired with the black pro mist 4X4. The first time I shot that setup I couldn't even believe the screen. If I have the space to use it, its pretty much always my first choice these days

Jonny Noakes hey Jonny, there’s not really a good option as far as an adapter goes. All of them have glass elements and they all trash the image pretty bad. The best way to go is to actually have it converted. You use to could buy the conversion kits from Ed Mika directly, but he stopped selling direct...so you’d need to go through a company like simmod to do the conversion. It’s not super cheap but if you plan on using it a lot on your Ef bodies it may be worth it.

Metabones made (Not sure if they still do) an ultra speed booster for micro 4/3 that went from FD to m4/3 and it was awesome. I would mainly use that with my FD lenses, and just occasionally would use a dummy adapter if I was wanting more reach out of my lenses

I’m going to make a video about it soon, but essentially FD lenses shouldn’t be adapted to EF. The adapters trash the image. For EF use professional conversion is required. The benefit of the pocket 4k is FD is more easily adapted to that size sensor and the mft mount. The beauty of the metabones speedbooster is it adapts the FD to m4/3 and also reduce the crop and adds light. It’s a great product but is now discontinued unfortunately, so it’s takes a little digging to find one.

Thank you! Really the only way to properly use FD on EF cameras without image quality loss is a mount conversion from FD to EF. Simmod is really the only company these days offering this product/service. It’s not very affordable honestly and if you get him to do it it’s apparently a long wait…but once done it really opens up the usability of these lenses. Some people do 3D printed mounts from shapeways for the smaller lenses, but I’ve not messed with it personally.

Hey Josh. I love FD lenses in general, but they go to another level on the P4k. You got some really nice shots out of them! I am just starting to piece together my P4k kit with FDs, and I was just wondering - do you have to use any kind of lens support or Metabones adapter support for the 70-210? Any worries in regards to the plasticy body of the P4k and the weight of the lens? That lens is one of my all-time favourites with the way it focuses and zooms. Also recommend checking out the 35mm, if you get the chance!

Thanks! My zoom gear doesn’t really rotate at all when I’m focusing, but in general my gears feel pretty loose. I have a follow focus gear around the focus wheel and that likely helps too as it’s very easy to turn and focus on the fly

Nathan Bailey sure thing! That’s def an observation I noticed too. For the most part the zooms are pretty sharp. Especially the 70-210 and 35-105. My suspicions are that something about having to add an auto focus system to a zoom causes some of the softness we see in modern zooms.

Hi appreciate your channel! This vid made me buy an FD 85-300, since the 50-300 is on the pricey side. love the look but there are a couple issues that i wonder if you share using the 50-300. 1. My focus ring is smooth as butter but my zoom ring is a bit stiff :( 2. When I shift the zoom one direction, the entire frame of the shot shifts slightly, clearly something internal happening where there is a little play. 3. Do you use a follow focus with the zoom, because the barrel extends and retracts a good inch, which makes using a follow focus difficult unless I had a 1" ring on the lens which I can't find online. Have you had any experience taking apart any of these lenses by any chance?

Thanks so much! Both of my rings seemed slightly stiff...I think theres certainly some inconsistency there. It sounds like your lens has some breathing going on. The 50-300 was parfocal, so it didn't breath at all. I had a big chunky follow focus gear on the 50-300 that I got from followfocusgears.com. As far as working on FD, I stay away from it. Its extremely complicated and I've ruined a few lenses trying. :)

Ankar Askar how will you be rigging it? Tripod? Monopod? The 70-210 with no speedbooster may be a little long for monopod use without it being shaky, but in general I find the FD zoom lenses much sharper than the modern EF zooms, so sharpness isn’t a big factor imo. I think the biggest difference is just the aperture speeds. The f4 can be a bit limiting unless there’s a lot of light.

I will be using it on a tripod mainly for short films, and sadly I have never shot anything longer than a 50mm so I guess 70-210 might be worth it to test out that longer focal range..I checked out your test shots and I am very impressed with this lens tbh, it's around $125CAD but I think I will go for it. Hey there. For FD use on zcam I change out the mount to mft and use a dummy FD to m4/3 adapter. On s6 and f6 the crop is very minimal and it works really well.

Depends on the series. The early breech locks tend to flare a good bit more. The ssc and nfd seem relatively controlled and not really an issue in my experience

Tena Gibson I did. I went past my personal comfort zone with by committing to turning the metabones into the camera body. I attempted over and over at first and maybe was just too careful. Then I just said fuck it and attached it with force and it clicked on. It’s just an extremely tight fight. Now it attaches with relative ease! Just a tight fit a first. I recommend just going for it!

Hey Jonny, in general I would stay away from FD to Ef adapters. They really trash the quality of the image...they soften it substantially, distort it, and you lose light. The best way to use FD is either with a professional mount conversion to EF, or through a camera that has a more flexible mount.

Thanks! I really like using the FD to m4/3 speedbooster when pairing with the p4k. This just makes the focal range a lot more usable. You can find them used for about $300, but totally worth it imo. On a tight budget I’d probably grab a 28 f2, 50 1.4, and an 85 1.8. You may could squeeze in a 135 2.8 as well. They aren’t very expensive

Canon FD lenses are absolutely fantastic! Grew up shooting them on Canon 35mm SLRs and never left them behind. However, note that you will almost always want to stop them down a few stops past wide open. Wide open they have a ton of halation (glow), chromatic aberration, and are generally too soft for anything but an artsy/lo-fi project. But a few stops down they clean up very nicely and can compete with modern lenses on sharpness without losing their charming qualities.

Thank you for the break down of these lenses. I bought the 70-210 for my BMPCC4k and I love it. Only issue is that I can’t adjust the aperture. I read they are locked by design unless mounted to an FD mount? I watched a few tutorials on how to be able to manually adjust it, but when I mount the lens back onto the camera the aperture closes back down and locks. It seems to be locked around F11 or F16. Do I need the metabones speed booster in order to control aperture? I bought the K&F Concept FD to M4/3 Lens Mount Adapter. Regardless. I still love the lens and I’m getting great images from it. Can’t beat the price.

Your adapter should have a little wheel on it that says open and closed. You have to attach the lens to the adapter while it’s in the closed position, and then once it’s attached and you move it to open, it should allow for aperture control. Let me know if that doesn’t work.

There’s really not a good way to use it with Ef without doing a conversion of the mount. They make adapters, but they have a glass element that completely trashes the image imo. Places like simmod will still do the conversion though. They did one on my 20-35 and it was great

SAPIEN STUDIO yea pretty much. A lot of them are reversible, but there’s just not a good way to keep functionality for both and be at optimal image quality. I love FD’s, but m42 Mount lenses like Takumar are the way to go if you want flexibility. You can attach Ef adapter rings, or FD adapter rings to them. I’m planning on doing a video about this soon.

Andrean Octavius yea! I’d probably go with like a 52mm to 77mm or whatever diameter the lens itself is. I am about to do this with all of my lenses, and basically step all my lenses up to 77mm. The only lens that wouldn’t work from this video is the 50-300 as the filter size is larger than they make the filter. You’d have to use a matte box for that lens

Andrean Octavius yes sir. Your math is correct. For FD lenses though, you’d need to use the FD to m4/3 metabones speedbooster, not an EF speedbooster. Putting these through a FD to Ef adapter causes a big hit on image quality. They can be converted but it’s kind of pricey. That’s the one advantage with the Pentax and Takumars, as they can be adapter to EF through a simple screw adapter that causes no quality loss

Hey Reginald, when I made this video, I was using the Metabones FD to m4/3 speedbooster with my P4k. Adapting the FD lenses to EF really kills the optical quality, so if you want to use FD with an EF mount camera, the best route is conversion. I had my 20-35L converted by Simmod, and they did a fantastic job. Ed Mika use to sell the conversion kits direct, but no longer does. Theres another company FD to EF, that sells the kits now, but the price is about the same as it costs for Simmod to do the conversion, so it seemed like a smarter option, as the lenses can be tricky to work on.

Regarding the de-clicking, most of the time I don't declick these film lenses, as I have a decent range of 35mm cameras that use the various vintage lenses I have, and the de-clicking cause cause aperture creep on some of them.

Reginald Worthington totally. I personally think the FD lenses have just way more character in a good way than standard EF. I have a bunch of those too (EF) and they just sit in my bag these days. Check eBay. You may be able to find already converted to EF FD lenses there. That’s the route I would go just because that makes it super easy

JulianLeBLanc ssc has breach lock mount which can be a little awkward to use, but in general are bigger and feel most robust. Optically the ssc and nfd all have the ssc coating, except for the nfd 50 1.8. The sc are going to have the single sc coating and will likely be the least resistant to flaring and least contrasted. I just like the ease of use of the nfd and their small size

I am thinking of investing in a set of FDs and am debating between the SSC and NFD versions. Optically, I hear they are more or less the same, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Build Quality of the NFDs. I plan on using a follow focus with these lenses (though I think you do not) Do you find any "play" in the NFDs when focusing? Or any wiggle in the mount (Metabones SB)? Nfd are meant to be lighter and more portable. At that period all the manufacturers were trying to make everything smaller. So strictly from a build standpoint, the ssc is a much more robust build, but optically they are basically the same. I would say for the most part I run into some play with most of my vintage lenses, FD included, when paired with a speedbooster...especially if using like an additional adapter ring like when I use m42 lenses in an Ef speedbooster...but it’s not really a lens issue. It’s more of a speedbooster issue. You really need a cage and something to lock the metabones into the cage with and you should be good to go

I'm thinking about to buy a set of vintage lenses. The FDs seems very fine lenses but I think I will go with something with harder bokeh (like Mamiya, Zeiss Jena MC, or SMC Takumar). If I want smoth Bokehs I can still grab my Sigma Art. It's realy tough to choose from all those great vintage options out there!

No. You can use just a dummy FD to m4/3 adapter but you’ll have to deal with the 1.9 crop of the pocket 4k. The FD to m4/3 is helpful as it reduces the crop and helps the lenses get much closer to their actual focal lengths

@@Drrezzin when I say dummy adapter I am strictly talking about an adapter with no corrective glass element. So it’s just a physical adaptation of the mount but doesn’t affect the image. They make these for FD to m4/3. Its basically allowing the lens to be mounted to the P4k, but is just passing through it, and so whatever crop the camera has the image will look like. So to answer your question yes you could just move back to widen your field of view. Canon FD being used on an EF Mount like your 7d is much more complicated. Because of the flange distances of EF, you can’t use an FD to EF adapter without having a corrective lens element in that adapter. Imo that corrective lens element destroys the image and makes it look like crap. Most people that want to use canon FD on Ef based cameras will have the mount professional converted to EF, but that being said when working with cameras that have other mounts that are more flexible and have a shorter flange distance like m4/3, rf, L, etc they will make adapters to go straight from the FD to that respective mount. The cool thing about the mft mount on the p4k is it’s very flexible and canon FD can be used with it without conversion of the mount. I personally like using the speedbooster version of FD to m4/3 though, because it makes getting wider shots a lot easier. Hope all that made sense!

Having both a speedbooster FD to m4/3 adapter and a dummy adapter can be very useful though. A lot of times for wildlife I will use the dummy adapter as it’s basically 2x the field of view with no quality loss, so it’s a great way to get longer distances while retaining full quality of the lens

A lot of my kit has changed since I shot this. In the Canon FD I love the Canon FD-L the most. I’ve added the 24 1.4, 50 1.2, and 85 1.2 since this. In the normal Canon FD i like the 28 f2, 50 1.4, and 85 1.8. I think that’s a killer combo that would do just about anything

Ryan Wooten depends on the lens really. Most vintage lenses don’t need it but a few of the sharper brands really benefit from it. It’s a bit of trial and error I think. I really love it on Canon FD-L lenses

I haven’t ever shot on the 2.8 before so I cannot say from experience, but optically they should be fairly similar with similar glass and the same coatings. I think the differences are found more in the look of the bokeh
