Great video, the FF and FN extension in the LUTs refers to the IRE Max value for broadcast FF = full to full with means the black level is set at Zero IRE and the White or Highlight level is set to 1023 IRE. When you choose FN which is Full to Narrow it allows the highlights to go into the Hyper Whites with means that the black level is still at zero IRE but the whites can go above 1023 IRE allowing for more detail throughout the tonal curve and why you see more information in the shadows as the whole curve has expanded. the FN version of the LUT works well for web or mobile delivery but would be compressed back down to "legal limits" if that clip was going to go out to broadcast. The values in the LUT name 17grid, 33grid and 65grid are accuracy maps. 17grid LUTs work great with 420 8bit but are not good enough for 444 10bit, where the 33grid is the minimum accuracy needed to translate CLog from a camera like the C200 when capturing in Canon RAW Light and the 65grid is what would be needed if the footage was going to be delivered to broadcast and or some streaming service like Amazon or Netflix. These types of videos are very helpful. Thanks again for putting in the time.

Luckily it was just a friend's house and I told her I was experimenting with a new video format. The footage has all the highlights clipped all over the place. Anyway this video is super great. One note - in Final Cut Pro, I can only load the 3D LUTS, not the 1D LUTS.

@@MichaelDrowley , yes, the mark iv. I just went purely on aesthetic look. While I appreciate how detailed your analysis was, at the end of the day for me, I just want the final footage to look a certain way. That specific LUT seemed to give a nice golden, cinematic look. After adding, I desaturated shadows a bit, and boosted mid tones slightly and it seemed to get me to a cine look far easier than going into davinci.

Thanks for the great video. Quick question, why did you use the 18% grey card to white balance and not the white card?
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the kind words! I used the 18% grey as it better represents skin mid-tones than a white card. So it white balances better for skin midtones rather than for pure white in the scene. If you are shooitng a scene without skin tone or with varied skin tones (2 presenters) then you might just white balance to a pure white card. The difference is minimal but you might find slightly better skin tone results from the grey card. Hope that helps.

Michael - what is the Sharpness setting for, and should it remain at 0 / mid / full?
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 2 жыл бұрын
Sharpness within the Canon LOG setting will apply sharpness to the clog in camera. So it will bake it into the image. I would be careful using full (or 7) as this may look over sharpened when you bring the image into post. I sometimes use a sharpness of 3 which just means I can edit and deliver the footage without any post sharpening which can be less heavy on your editing software.

i am so confused why canon say the middle gray should be at 34.3% ire for clog and clog3?
@ZaaM1
@ZaaM1 4 жыл бұрын
good job man , you said before you should make the gray card at 50% in the histogram , why did you set it at 40%? and i think at 50% the video was right exposed ? and whats ideal iso to use with canon eos r when using clog? and if iam quick on color grading and dont wana use clog what picture style is best for fast and good color grading ? neutral or standard is better? thx
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 4 жыл бұрын
ZaaM Thanks mate! I use 40% in this particular video for skin tones because that is what is recommended by Canon. It’s actually 36% I think. However, I believe that introduces too much noise in the shadows with the 5D4 and EOSR log implementation as with log you have to have a plan to deal with noise as it is more grainy than a normally exposed picture profile image as the noise in the image and higher iso setting you need to shoot with allows the sensor to retain more detail in both the shadows and the highlights. Regarding ISO use 400 which is the native ISO for clog. Finally I like neutral picture profile for anything I want to apply a quick grade to. For anything I do not want to grade at all on the EOS R I use standard picture profile with sharpness dependant on the lens (for the 24mm f1.4 I use plus 7 sharpness) and the contrast down 2 notches. Hope that helps and maybe check out my other video on picture profiles... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXnLoKeBlMmLgdU

Hey Michael, I just had clog installed on my Mkiv, and just downloaded these LUTs. Useful starting point for a grade. I prefer the image quality of standard profile to clog............clog degrades the image quite a bit, reminds me of a pair of jeans that have been through the wash a dozen times.....but I can see that during times when I am shooting in conditions where there is a lot of contrast that clog will be great...ie midday. Rather than use the grey card, I guess I am happy to just look at the waveform and make sure that I am not clipping the whites or crushing the blacks for exposure. Good to see your videos on shooting with the 5mk4....I also love the 5dmk4 24mm f1.4ii combo. cheers
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
Miles Trevelyan-Johnson Thanks mate! Bit of feedback maybe if you will? Do you feel like the image in this particular video of mine is lacking at all or degraded? It was all shot in cLOG and coloured with the Canon LUTS! I’m kinda feeling the opposite to you after shooting this video all in LOG. I usually shoot my KZbin videos in standard and also quick client turn around too. Though I just feel the colour depth in the highlights and range is so solid with Log! The grey card is important to get the skin exposed between 30-40% on the histogram. That’s where you would easily see clipped highlights and noisy blacks if you get your mid grey under 30% or over 40%. Thanks for checking it out and giving your valued feedback! Enjoy the 5D 4 mate! It’s a beast of a camera!

I think that you improved the grade in this video with the Canon luts pack....so the colours are more faithful. I think if the 5dmk4 shot Raw......the final grade would have a bit more punch and depth than clog.................skin tones under artificial lighting are a tough starting point for any grade...................you can test it yourself shooting a raw photograph vs a grab of 4k footage in clog.........then you could compare the depth of raw with clog.

I installed C-Log on my 5D Mark IV a while back and all I can say is that C-Log makes an incredible difference with the overall image quality. The dynamic range is increased dramatically and really allows for much more detail to be captured. The key is that you must expose properly, white balance properly, and then color correct and/or color grade properly. I then add a little bit of sharpening in post. Log is by far the absolute best way to capture footage. It took me some time to understand how to really appreciate Log and how good it actually is, but I finally see what everyone has been saying about "shoot with a flat picture profile", "more dynamic range", "It's how the Hollywood filmmakers shoot". I shoot everything in C-Log.

Bestian Long Nah, these will generally only work properly on the implemented clog that comes with the 5D4 (or can be purchased as a Canon service addition) and EOSR. The James Miller profile is great but it’s just like a picture profile, there is no logarithmic sensor remap happening like what the clog does when activated. Hope that helps

Felix Arias Thanks for your reply. It will depend on the project if I use it not. For fast turn around stuff with no real need to develop a “look” in the colour grade, I will shoot in Neutral (prolost), but even sometimes in Standard with a custom white balance to get it spot on for skin tones using a grey card looks really really good and suits some of my clients. If I Shoot any interview outside or with a high dynamic scene, I almost always shoot log in those situations.

Felix Arias Thsnks Felix, blessings right back at you my friend and thanks for your prayers! Prolost is a flat profile using Neutral and turning down sharpness, contrast and a few notches of saturation. prolost.com/blog/2012/4/10/prolost-flat.html I like and have used Cinestyle but where they are different is the Log is actually a compression of the dynamic range to allow you to get 12 stops whereas the picture profiles, like James Miller is just adjusting the normal sensor image prosessing and still only using normal dynamic range of the sensor, which is less than what clog provides.

Hi Michael, Hope you're well, i was wondering something, #1 Do we need to apply the Lut canon always as a starting point ? or we can directly apply an other lut we love ( 70's, lunar .... vintage ...) , I'm editing a wedding, and I don't want a lunar look but a special style ( vintage), I don't know if I apply canon lut, to have a normal style ( and set my white ... ) and after the other one OR directly the generic vintage one LUT ... #2 Maybe canon lut are just to have a normal style but advanced and not different style right ? thank you

John Aiken hey John, the Canon LuT will get you a Profile like Standard right out of the log image. You could not worry about the LuT and apply your own or others and see how that looks, if it gets you a vintage look. I might apply the LuT first and then add a curve to add a fade or tweak midtones in the colour wheels and / or lower saturation and contrast to taste. Experiment with both options and see. The look that I produced for the last wedding I did from log was based on my own grades and not using Canon LUTs first

Mike - A question for you... why didn't you bring the ISO down instead of changing your aperture??? - my experience with the MKIV - the lower the ISO the far better the footage is - with 160 ISO and 320 being the best - then 640 and 1250. anything above I need to clean up some of the noise and other rubbish that comes in - all workable just extra work with software plugins like Neat video or Magic Bullet suite etc. I totally LOVE Canon C-Log and find with correct exposure its brilliant to work with. Keep up the Awesome work Mike

Kevin Evans Thanks so much Kevin! Appreciate your input here and thanks for checking out the video! I have it set to 400 as the native ISO for Log on the 5D Mark 4. As you drop down from 400 you are slightly decreasing the dynamic range of the sensor so at 100 ISO I would say you are probably closer to 11 stops as opposed to the full 12 stops available with cLOG. In that case you may be better just shooting in a neutral picture profile with the full 10 stops available and less work in post to bring it back. I tend to agree with you though, and I find when you over or under expose the cLOG at 100 to 160 ISO it feels more reliable and flexible to correct that in post without introducing noise so I don’t often shoot at the native 400 unless I really need that addition stop of range like shooting from light to shadow in the midday sun and in those cases where I am really pushing things everything will get a pass through neat video! ;-) thanks again for your comments and input!

I use a 50mm F1.2 Canon lens on my Mark IV a lot - and often film at F1.2 -1.8 with the Dual Pixel its amazing and never misses a beat - always sharp and amazing backgrounds - and using low ISO's producing perfect bokeh backgrounds - Cheers

Kevin Evans Yeah, I mention that I stopped down with aperture and said that I use an ND filter in cases I want to run the aperture lower. What you’re missing is the native ISO (not aperture or shutter) for the cLOG on the 5D Mark 4 to get the full 12 stops of Dynamic range available from the cLOG upgrade is 400 and above.

OK... I see the neutral ND in for F stops and C-Log to native 400 ISO... OK - all good Mike. I work with machinegunpreacher.org and live on the Sunshine Coast - love to catch up with you one day - check out kevinevans.com.au - all the best mate - Kev

Are you sure there wasn't any 709 -> 709 luts there too? You only tried 2020 -> 709 in this video. I don't think 5D Mark IV shoots 2020.

I absolutely agree, and even if if empirically it seems to be working, it's sad and much less useful to be unable to understand the logic behind this. this is really just scraping the surface. and after following a professional cc/cg course for Davinci with a guru, I'm starting to think that most people, including professionals and teachers, just don't care - to some degree - about technicalities, as long as their workflow/pipeline delivers good results. and those who know more will not share it to the broad population. understandable too.

Emin Hasanov It’s an upgrade only available through Canon directly via a sensor remapping so you have to arrange to have installed at a Canon service centre!

Thanks for this. Do you use these along with other luts? Or is this a basic lut just like the ones that other creators on youtube make for purchase?

Derek Livingston Thanks Derek. I usually use this and then tweak the look to taste after applying them. I have now built my own CINE VLOG lut which is based off a Canon LUT with some colour tweaks and then adds sharpness and creative vignette. Check out my most recent video for this.

Hi do you notice the c-log has more noise than the neutral Profile even your clip is properly exposed? Btw great video!
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
Hey friend, yeah the log profile has more noise in it than nuetral or other pic profiles. But it also has a lot more flexibility and dynamic range and I generally only get noise when I am shooting against a really dark backdrop that is front lit or with high shadow detail that I underexpose by mistake. You can really push it before you get a heap of noise. Also ISO 320 might be cleaner than 400 but you may not get all the dynamic range out of the camera if not shooting with native 400 iso. Hope that helps - keep experimenting. Denoise with neat video if you make a mistake or are unhappy with the results!

Hi there, i've my 5D upgraded to clog, i've tried some footages but Not yet in low light ! I know that the native 400 is the best for dynamique range. But I wonder, Ín the case where I really need ISO like 3200 or even 6400 because it's dark, will it still be better to keep shooting at 400 and denoise post prod?! Or is the particular case I can go more that 400 ? Thanks
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
John Aiken I would say going that high with ISO you should use neutral profile as the cLOG won’t hold up in the shadows/blacks above 800 ISO. 800 is the max I would run for shooting in cLOg! Hope that helps

Hi Michael ! Thanks a lot , yes it's help. When you use neutral profile so to go up .. 800 , you change something or let it basics settings ?

I still can't figure out what happened here. You spend all that time looking through the LUT documentation to see which ones were best used with the 5D mk IV, but then you just dumped the whole pack into premiere and then it seemed like you were merely picking them at random. What was the point of reading through that mess?
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Scott - I wanted to go through the technical documentation side of the LUTS development first so I wasn't just "picking them at random" right from the beginning of the video. I always aim to try and go a little deeper to present a fuller understanding from what I have learnt about the process, in this case, what I know about the Canon provided cLOG LUTS. Thanks for checking out the vid, apologies if it didn't connect. Do you shoot on the Canon 5D4 yourself Scott?

@@MichaelDrowley Yes. Just got one, (Only took what, two and a half years to decide!) and am researching how to approach color correcting the log footage, and how to properly expose when shooting with it. All very new to me. I read through those readme files myself and had considerable difficulty deciphering them. My impression was that only two of the many many LUTs in the new download (version 201902) were designed for the 5D4. But of course i'm not exactly confident in my interpretation. I suppose my main stumbling point in your vid was following any connection between what you learned from the documentation and which LUTs you picked. Example: Charts in your vid say BT709, but you picked BT2020.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Sandifer Yeah, the BT2020 is processing for a higher dynamic rage image but it will still give a difference in the tonal range and colour depth processing on the 709 image. The reason I was light on with giving definitives is because I want to make sure people explore things for themselves to discover what works for them and their workflow. Hope that it helped you and good luck with experimenting with it all!!!

Every time you are saying " I hope you are still with me" why don't you edit your video and move to the next place where there is relevant information. You could move through your info and video faster.

This is all garbage when you take a compressed video from a gamma curve, you lose the gradation of colors, when you expand the gamma again, you lose the gradation again.
