No. the finish is not smooth, very noticeable and yes, it is because it was not sanded...furniture need prep

I painted my bedroom set a few years back and now I want to repaint it. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint then used a stained wax. Can I paint over the wax? What kind of prep do I have to do before I can paint? Appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

At minimum you'll want to clean the surface with mild dish soap like dawn. And then you'll want to use a good bonding primer before applying a new coat of paint. You can also give the bedroom set a light scuff sanding then add primer.

Why doesn’t the piece have a smooth finish? Is it because it wasn’t sanded before the first coat of paint?

The original finish was a little textured, but the black chalk paint did dry smooth to the touch. We did use a 220 grit sandpaper to lightly smooth the finish before the second coat of paint was applied.
