Ludicrous comment. As someone said above, you’ve contradicted your own post. Sure he’s not Yngwie - but how many of his songs are we all humming? Edge is a great example of less is more. He’s a master of his sounds and uses the guitar to create incredible sonic landscapes. He is, most certainly, a great guitarist.

Dotted 8th note delay time for 120bpm: (Quarter note) 60,000 divided by 120 = 500ms (8th note) 500ms divided by 2 = 250ms (16th note) 500ms divided by 4 = 125ms dotted 8th (8th + 16th)= 375ms at 120 bpm That's what he meant

I actually took the time to compute the results: the dotted 8th note delay for 108bpm = 417 ms. The 8th note delay = 278 ms. Your explanation was very helpful. I had to rewind a few times to take notes, but I FINALLY understand what to do! Pay no mind to the lazy jerks commenting on here. They are dismissive because they cannot do elementary math. My only problem: I will need two delay pedals: one for the eight note delay and another for the dotted eight note delay.

Most delay pedals will contain a tap tempo which will get you the correct time. Then use the subdivision 'Dotted 8th' (aka dotted quaver).

The math is easy for anyone interested in precision of this type. It seems to me easy enough to simply count in setting a tap delay tempo, but many without a musical background would struggle with this.

@erik62976 жыл бұрын
The edge doesn't do the math (however it is good math). He uses a delay pedal made by Even Tide called the "Time Factor." you can use milliseconds or set it to a tap tempo. While it is in tap mode, the dials set the type of note you want the delay to be. What he does is he has two delays active on this one pedal. Delay A is set to a dotted 1/8 note, and delay B set to a 1/8 note. The volume mix between the two delays is set such that delay B is roughly 1/4 the volume of delay A. This creates a stutter ish sounding effect that sounds like " Dah (rest) Dah-Dah" shown here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omPTpql_aa6ZfZI. Hope this helped :D

I always laugh when people complain about having to learn math or music theory to play guitar. Saying "I want to play guitar but I don't want to bother to understand music" is like saying "I want to build a car but I don't want to bother learning how pistons work". Seriously? If someone shows you how to do it but you don't bother to learn the "why", you're just copying someone else's work, even if you are writing your own stuff. Anyone can memorize what string to hold down. But you're never going to be good if you're not willing to put in the work, and you will never be great if you don't learn the math and the music theory. The Edge developed this technique because he took the time to learn the math and the music theory. Everyone these days has the attention span of a slightly brain damaged goldfish and wants someone else to do it for them. *smh*

I agree. Why imitate when you can create? Just stop trying to express yourself via song or genre choice and learn how to play the instrument for god sake.

We all appreciate by your explanation but most of us almost 90% of the people here just wants to know how to do it more than understanding it. Some of the people don't even know the musical terms like 8th/16th notes etc, thus making it even hard and boring for them to grasp what you were saying. Little bit of advice if you don't mind: *Less talking and more playing.* But great on the theory part of the delay timing and such.

The lessons are great, presentation and narrative/dialogue awesome! But I hafta say as a matter of pedagogy that there is really only a C#minb6 in a theoretical music world view, the only proper min6 chords are those with a M6 in them. The actual name for the 2nd chord is A/C# chord that then becomes an AMaj7/C#. It's all just IV chord stuff at the end of the day. great job anyhoo!

@timhansen455610 жыл бұрын
Lots of great delay theory here, thanks! If I may, I'd like to suggest an easier way to tap the dotted 8th delay into your amp/effects pedal, something I figured out just today after watching some other U2 delay videos. Rather than setting your metronome to a 1/16th note cadence and then trying to tap on every 3rd click, see if this doesn't sound like it would work better and easier: Lets assume the song's cadence is 100 bpm, in 4/4 time, and you want a dotted 1/8th delay but you only have a tap feature to set that up .Each beat (1/4 note) is 60000/100=600 ms. The dotted 1/8th is 3/4 of that, or 450 ms. Now divide that 450 back into 60000, and you get 133.3 bpm. Now, just set your metronome to 133 bpm, @ 4/4 time, and then tap that cadence into your effect source. Then set the metronome back to 100 bpm and play to that beat. If this is all wrong, I apologize and will gladly delete this post if I can. But if I'm correct, give me a "like"...
