Using gabapentin or pregabalin to sedate your cat for travel

@@reinygreen9521 Hey, sorry for the late reply. I didn't take the flight after all. Well, we took a shorter flight elsewhere (2,5 hours). No medication. The cats didn't like it, but they're doing just fine now. I hope your trip will go smoothly!

My cat's hind legs get weak too but the effects wear off completely in around 24 hours. She needs it for vet visits. I hate it and it's tough to watch and deal with but without it vet visits would be impossible.

@@CinCee- They prescribed one Gabapentin (100 mg) 12 hrs before vet visit and then the same dosage 2 hrs prior to vet visit. Along with the Gabapentin, 1/2 of a 50 mg tablet of Trazadone along with the Gabapentin during both dosages. I begin to see the effects within an hour but the effects really stay with her all day long. My cat can get so aggressive with unwanted stimulation that she still gets swatty and bitey, even with the pills and Thundershirt on at the vet. They want to double her dosage next time but I refuse. I am going to try a cat-only clinic next year. And maybe a muzzle too.

@@eschuler6503 I know this is a few months prior but definitely try going to a cat only clinic. They are very patient with all the quirks of felines and will give you some great tips. Mine said that for nervous cats to try a fabric smaller vented enclosure that they get used to for a few weeks. But if yours is fractious and angry they will claw through anything. It may be better to forego a visit and instead find a mobile vet who will visit you.

It doesn’t work well with my cat. I increased doses but he is still gets very scared. He breads very fast with an opened mouth and keeps on screaming. He gets very tired from this and sleeps awhile, but with a very high heat beats. Im having a 7 hours flight and I myself am so scared cuz of my cat’s reaction. Not sure if I have to give him the medicine a day before and the day of the trip !?

No, it's not. You are better off growing your own poppy. Gabapentin is the drug of Satan, and the makers of that drug are the ones burning all of God's drugs. Pain is better than taking Gaba.
