Let's see if I understand this correctly. In order for the MDI 2 work with a Ford vehicle, I just need to download the Ford diagnostic software to my laptop. Is this correct?

⁠@@jeff7.629it’s not always that simple, but yes. The MDI2 is a powerful J2534 Device…. It is actually capable of running the factory diagnostics software for multiple makes. Usually if you’re trying to program a powertrain related module most J2534 capable devices should do it successfully, the access is mandated by law for powertrain modules. Programming is risky so using the correct specified equipment is the only way to have guaranteed results. Recently I tried to use the GM GDS2 scan tool with a Ford VCM 2 device… it works, but not fully so I found the limitations there. The Ford device worked fine on Tech2Win though. Thanks.

Yep found this out using Forscan. The generic J2534 pass through cable I was using wouldn't work right on a newer Ford say 2018(?) so I grabbed an MDI 2 from the shop and sure enough did the job.
