Let's start with the laptop, because this is where things take shape before I make them on the desktop.
I use 2 laptops. The first one is a Slimbook Executive 16, and the second is a Tuxedo Stellaris 15.
They both use a core i7 12700H, they both have 16 gigs of RAM, and the Slimbook has an RTX 3050Ti, where the Stellaris has a 3060. They both have 1440p screens. Both laptops run Fedora GNOME, using Wayland, with a few extensions.
First is the all important appindicator support. I also added the "Notification banner reloaded" extension, the Quick Settings tweaker extension, the Privacy Quick settings menu, GS connect, and I have light / dark theme switcher.
And to manage these extensions, I use Extension Manager, a wonderful app that lets you browse, install, update and configure everything.
On top of that, I installed the libadwaita GTK3 theme so apps that haven't been ported to GTK4 still look like the rest of my desktop, as much as possible.
First is writing my scripts. To do that, I use the Iotas Note application. To research scripts, I use Firefox as my web browser, with the Nextcloud passwords extension to sync them between devices.
My laptops are also where I do most of my email, and for that, I use Geary. I also handle all my todo lists on my laptops, and for that I use Endeavour.
I also use the Nextcloud desktop client to sync all my files between devices, and the Synology Drive client, which has a COPR repo that packages it. And finally, I have the occasional use for the GIMP, and OnlyOffice.
I make heavy use of the split screen feature. I also use the activities view, by using touchpad gestures. 3 fingers up on the touchpad brings the overview, and then I can just select a window, or open a new one from the bottom dock or using the keyboard.
My desktop has a Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 3070, and 32 gigs of RAM. It's plugged into an LG curved ultrawide monitor at 1440p, and I use a logitech MX Master S3 as my mouse, plus some generic logitech speakers.
My desktop runs Fedora 37, with GNOME. I also add the exact same extensions as on my laptop. I also don't use minimizing at all.
Then, I use Davinci Resolve to do the actual editing. If I need an illustration, like a screenshot, I'll just use the Firefox screenshot tool to capture parts of a webpage, or the whole webpage entirely,.
If I need to record my screen, I use OBS. If I need to quickly download a meme video, or one of my own that I didn't back up, I use Tube Converter. All my Virtual Machine needs are handled using GNOME Boxes, I upload my videos using Firefox, all my thumbnails are done using GIMP.
To record podcasts, I use Audacity with a Blue Yeti microphone.
I use the keyboard a lot here, with the super key being used to open the activities view, or a double tap of the super key to access the app launcher, I use super + left or super + right to tile a window, and super + alt + an arrow key to move to another workspace. When I need to quickly move a window to the next workspace, I use super + alt + shift and an arrow key.
I also use the super key to drag windows around, or super + middle click to quickly resize a floating window.

One extension that is a must have for me in regards to consistency is the rounded window corners (not to be confused with rounded corners) as it will "fix" the bottom corners of GTK3 applications to be round too :)

KDE apps: A full blown paiting app that is arguably better than paid options; an app that can output a graph if you input an equation; an RStudio like app; feature rich text editors and an IDE with support for tree view and LSP; an entire office suite; a video editor; a music conerter; a tagging aplication; KDE Connect, etc. GNOME Circle apps: an app that allows you to visit wikipedia without opening a browser; a lorem ipsum generator... for when you want to not open the browser; a radio app, so that you don't need to open the browser; a magic ball app, so that you don't need to open the browser to do t-that, uh, yeah. GNOME apps are great indeed.

THANKS NICK!! This video is an excellent confidence builder for my intentions to migrate my Audio and Video Media production workflow from Mac to Linux (leaving behind several older Macs hitting an OS max of HighSierra or Mohave). Lots in common with my style of interface usage as well -- virtual desktops all the way. 🙂Totally on board with ALL your choices of tools as well -- DaVinci Resolve and BitWig Studio support for Linux are big reasons for my migration decision. Hard choice moving forward is high end System76 or new Framework 16". Based on your experiences, Nvidia GPU may be the deciding factor. Your thoughts on both that choice and on the better Linux distros for keeping those older Macs out of the landfill would be welcome!

Text scaling is a good workaround for not having DPI scaling, but it is set for the computer rather than for each monitor. I run a custom script in the Run Command dialog (Alt+F2) to switch off my laptop's text scaling when I dock it to my monitor (and back on when it's undocked). There's an extension which does the same thing from an icon in the Top Bar, but typing is so much quicker!

Ive been loving using arch+sway at work for the past 3 years. As soon as you have everything set up, just the way you want it because it's arch, it runs as stable as any other distro, and perhaps even more so due to the lack of automatic updates. If you do want to update for the sake of security, stability or installing new software, the process will be less or more involved depending on how long you waited, but it's a tradeoff that *you* are making, actively. You can set aside a couple minutes to run the upgrade, and if it all goes well you'll be done in no time. If it doesn't, well, I've only managed to brick my kernel twice, and that was one time because I used a zfs package compiled for a specific kernel version (Fix: DKMS), and one time because a kernel update GPLed some symbols which zfs wasnt updated for yet, but that one did not stop me from working because I installed an LTS kernel alongside the regular one.

I'd love to be able to use Linux. I used EOS and Fedora for over a year, and I loved it. But when it came to collaborating with others in MSWord, Powerpoint, Excel etc, it killed the experience. The webapps were not great to keep the formatting and the linux apps have the same issue. I had to run MS Office in a windows VM which ruined the experience, so I ended up going back to W11. I will try back in a few years.

GNOME on mutli-monitor desktop settings could be better, some basic extensions really should be built in, but overall stock experience is great and customisable enough to suit most users.

I've been using Linux for work since 1997. And I think Linux is very comfortable to work with. For day to day I use Debian Linux with i3. And for my laptop, I use Fedora Linux and Debian Linux with Gnome DE.

Hey Nick, I'm curious to know how well Fedora handles Nvidia these days in wayland. Are you using the nouveau driver or the proprietary one. I am currently on PopOS, and thinking about switching to Fedora after this.

Avec les drivers propriétaires, ce qui veut dire que tout ce qui utilise le GPU sera moins performant et plus instable. Les drivers amdgpu-pro sont assez pourris, notamment pour le jeu !

I'm a long-term KDE user. I recently tried out gnome on fedora, which I do every couple of years. It looks good, but didn't find it as usable. Also, it gave me huge mouse lag after a bit of use and just moving the mouse around would cause the cpu to spike to nearly 100% on one core. (I have a 6 core Ryzen 4500U.) I tried to troubleshoot it but couldn't find the problem. I had NO extensions installed or even extensions enabled and it was pretty much a fresh install. So that lasted about a week and then I went back to KDE Manjaro.
