Not all that long ago i used to debate all the different perspectives of this: "just land on the appropriate mode OR why not just simply modulate" or "this way is easier" or WHATEVER. BUT somehow it took ONE person to knock the sense into me and it stayed. The PURPOSE as Jayme is explaining is JUST to be able to USE your tried, tested, and simple pentatonic scales in more colorful ways. THATS IT. Which ends up being a very handy technique in MANY scenarios. These are just basic exercises for now. You can still use all your other perspectives whenever you desire. (I end up using whatever the tune, jam, or vamp calls for) These Q's are just part of teaching this is suppose. Love the teaching style, Thanks for your lessons, good stuff.

What you said is very important at 7:35 about the relationship between the II (Dorian) and the i (Ionian). I tell students, that knowing these two scales alone is incredibly useful in a playing context, and in improvisation. Keep up the good work!

+1BassJohn Thanks John! I couldn't agree more :)
@deadbeatstudios11 жыл бұрын
yes you are correct. A major scale has the 4th and 7th, which the pentatonic leaves out. The difference is that using the major scale takes it to a new key; if we're in the key of C, substituting G Major instead of G Major Pentatonic adds an F# to the mix, which is no longer diatonic to the key of C Major (which would have an F Natural). Not to say it's wrong or sounds bad... I hope that helps!

Why assume any particular key in a one chord groove? Em7 can be the i of E minor, ii of D major, iv of B minor, iii of C major, v of A minor, or vi of G major, but it can also be a borrowed chord from one of those keys being applied to any other key.

can i use this theory but replace the major pentatonics with ionian mode and replace the minor pentatonics with aeolian mode? so if im playing over the e minor chord, can i use d ionian and a ionian?
@jubilee9188 жыл бұрын
+ Jayme Lewis Great lesson! Thanks for this upload. I'm not sure if anyone asked this; In this example the E minor was the 2 of the D major, Or the Dorian. Can this method work if it is the Sixth or Aeolian. So the Ionian would be G Major, can you still select the same notes to run the Pentatonic. I do apologize if my question is not clear.

+Willard Joseph Yes! That works as well, I just decided to go dorian. Phrygian would make it even more weird, if you wanna step more out of the box :)

Sounded really good Jayme ,,, but where is the chrome on your strings. I use D'Addario Nickel Wound EXL165 , 2 pack. Amazon got me good when I ordered two separate sets @ $22 when they had a 2 pack for $23 , Rookie mistake ,,, won't happen again.

Well I dont want to start a string fetish but I want to try Elixir cause some people say are better than D'Addario , I dont know about that , more expensive I know that for sure. I've never used flatwound now I need to try them , you got me on a string fetish now, Geez

Jayme you know Mark Smith , he held up a box of D'Addario EXL165 strings like the kind I use showing how to apply strings to his bass and I noticed some writing on his box my box didn't have , so I went to Amazon to see what it was and it said 2 PACK and the price was same as the single pack and I ordered two single packs @ $23 each , I had to just scream cause the 2 pack is the same price as the single pack. I thought why didn't Amazon tell me this, I didn't see the two pack till I looked closer. I just put a set on , they sound great , do you know how some string post are tapered and some are flat round post , well mine are tapered , the E string will overlap itself if I make more than 2 winds , then its always out of tune, each day I have to retune that one string , is there any way around this. I tried laying it flat against the round washer but when I tighten the string it slips up because of the tapered string post. Why does Fender do this on the new basses , mine is a 2014 Jazz , nice bass. I put on a pearloid pickguard it looks good. Same as Stuarts bass but a Fender. here below : www.notreble.com/buzz/2016/06/14/stuart-clayton-giants-of-bass-billy-sheehan/

What about playing in F Major Pentatonic (F Lydian), or D minor (Dorian) Pentatonic, over that Em7 chord? Would it sound too weird? I mean, it's like the harmony is over the iii degree, and we're soloing over the ii or IV. Does it sounds too strange?

I'd say that technically you can do anything that you want, there's no right or wrong in music, really. By doing it this way you're using notes that are in the key but not in the chord. By replacing 3 major pentatonics with 3 ionians, you are changing the key 3 times. It'll certainly sound more "out of the box" but that's not to say you couldn't make it work. I say go for it!
@deadbeatstudios11 жыл бұрын

so you are using three keys,g major and its realtive minor e,and d major and its realtive minor B,and A major and its realitive minor F sharp,so there is only two added notes to e minor,the f sharp and the c sharp,so f sharp works out as the ninth of e minor and c sharp works out as the 13th of e minor,but you are not using the f sharp or the c sharp as roots,your keeping the e minor as the root,so you could just play the e minor pentatonic and add the ninth f sharp and add the 13th the c sharp,would this be an easier way to think of it rather than three different pentatonic scales,or is there a reason to think of it as the three scales,good video and info

Hi Jayme. You make it sound very complicated. Why don't you just show students how to use Dorian mode rather than combining three different minor pentatonic scales? (Because that's what you are actually doing: using E Dorian scale). Your approach must be very confusing to most people and from a music theory point of view it is a total nonsense. You could explain Dorian mode as a minor pentatonic based scale with added major second and major 6th, I guess. However, my suggestion to you: brush on your modal scales before putting together next lesson.
@deadbeatstudios8 жыл бұрын
Peter Klapka you're so awesome.
@peterklapka40798 жыл бұрын
So are you bud...
@fg87fgd8 жыл бұрын
Peter, to be honest, I got the impression you are missing major points here. Jayme is talking about different scales to be used over the same chord (which is E Minor). If you play E Minor pentatonics (same as G Major pent.) it could be Dorian, Phrygian, or Aeolian. In Jayme's second example things are already a bit different, since he uses D Major pent. over E Minor he excluded Phrygian as a scale. C Major pent. over E Minor excludes everything but Phrygian, etc. Now relax, fiddle around with a F# Major pent. over C7 and think about altered scales.
@peterklapka40798 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry Norbert but Jayme is suggesting to use Em pentatonic E-G-A-B-D (same as G pentatonic G-A-B-D-E) and replace them occasionally with D pentatonic D-E-F#-A-B or A pentatonic A-B-C#-D-E. However, he always comes back in his examples to Em pentatonic. If we look at the notes these 3 scales are constructed from we will end up with E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D witch is E dorian that is usually used over m7 chords. So, he is not really using 3 different scales but rather one - E dorian.
@robserica7 жыл бұрын
Dude that is the same thing I am thinking right now.It is easier to think of it as just E dorian and aim for that major 6 and major second.
