This build also serves as a quick lesson on how to make _Minecraft_ castles that feel _authentic._ One thing you notice pretty quickly about Corfe Castle is that its walls follow the contours of the hilltop -- the defenses encircle the portion of the hill that's the shallowest gradient, leaving the steepest inclines leading to the base of the walls. It makes use of the natural terrain as much as possible.

Oooh. I've been to Corfe Castle! They called it a "medieval skyscraper". Apparently the ruin is a bit atypical in that it was actually demolished, rather than just abandoned; the result of negotiations for repayment after a military defeat. The point where the castle was located was too strategic and was to never be used again.
@demosthenes14962 жыл бұрын
The guys who took it (let in by a traitor) realised that they couldnt hold it and so to avoid it being recaptured, BOOM.

I was just sitting here wondering how castles fall into ruin like this. Like a fire wouldn’t do it since it’s vast majority stone. So I was wondering did people just leave it abandoned for 100s of years? But surely someone would want to snatch that up and live in it. But I got my answer for this one. It was intentionally destroyed.
@Nyerguds2 жыл бұрын
@@rachelcookie321 Yea, you can see the main gate is broken in the center and sagged away oddly; that's not something simple neglect will do.
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei11 ай бұрын
@@rachelcookie321 Well, there are a lot of castle ruins here in Germany. Some of them were indeed used for a long time and just kinda started to fall apart because they weren't properly maintained. Others got damaged during war, keep in mind, the first cannons in Europe were used in like the 13th century. Some were partly taken apart because people wanted to build other stuff and just took the material from the castle or it was in the way of something they wanted to build at that place. A lot of castles were heavily damaged during the Thirty Year's War, during the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleon captured a bunch of castles and deliberately blew them up) or were used during WW1 or WW2 as command posts and were then targeted by artillery. Some castles were also heavily modified after the medieval age to serve either as more modern fortresses or as more palace-like residences of rich people. In German we actually differentiate between Burg and Schloss - both is translated into English as castle. A Burg is the kind of fortified structure from the medieval age that was used as a residence for nobles and also often served as a economical and administrative center for a region while a Schloss is more of a post-medieval residence that mostly looks nice and may have purely decorative features that look like fortification. But like actually, it was not that rare for castles to be demolished at some point. In the case of Corfe castle, it was actually partly demolished along many other castles in the 17th century as a result of the English Civil War and the near villages partly demolished the castle on their own to get stone to rebuild their own houses after the war. Which is really not that special.

Pleasantly surprised to see my reconstruction of Corfe Castle in this video! It's the one at 3:55, you can view the animation on my channel. May I just ask to be credited in the description please? I also agree with Grian that it is really difficult doing a reconstruction of this castle, with all of the variations that exist between illustrations and especially that it was expanded over time! I remember reading quite a few books about the castle. My version is also a bit earlier than the other illustrations, so it is missing certain things, such as the viewpoint/balcony, right of the keep. And had other extra things, such as the wooden structure above the gate. I really enjoyed watching your build Grian and I think you did a fantastic job, it looks amazing! This BY FAR! Is one of the coolest things I've seen on youtube. This needs to become a series. I know it would take a ton of time away from Hermitcraft, but you could become a historian mincrafter, going all over the world to see places, teach a little history about it and build it in game. 10/10 would watch 100% of those videos. Side note, I feel like all builders or whoever on Hermitcraft should take a trip and do this if they have time.

Only British people would think a place 20 minutes from a fairly large city is remote

@@ducklordthegreat352 Considering that Dorset is the only county without a motorway and that we really only have two actual cities which are Poole and Bournemouth which are also mainly counted as one as they are right next to each other. And that the rest is of dorset is just rural. So the answer is still yes. Dorset is rural.
@ducklordthegreat3522 жыл бұрын
Pixelevee rural sure, but it’s very much not in the middle of nowhere. To me that implies at least 2 hours from the nearest city, whereas you can get to Corfe Castle from Poole in about 20 minutes.
