Using the CAGED System To Crush the BLUES!

A subscriber asked how the CAGED system could be used in a blues context. He even gave me a hypothetical progression so I decided to cover it today. Thanks for responding to my question. That is an awesome explanation. I am quite familiar with the shapes, modes, etc but never saw the CAGED system as an effective way of bookmarking chords in a given progression. Great video - your teaching style is very impressive. I have watched quite a few of your videos but I was grateful to see you addressed my exact concerns.

Thanks for the video! I have to comment on your shirt... I had to google it, to find that its a fan shirt from The Karate Kid, but what sparked my interest was that I was in the USA for a Karate Tour in 1984. We went to see the premier of the movie in Boston. Good memories!

Ah man, finally. Thank you so so much for me finally understanding how to do this & link things together. I’ve been looking for a video like this for ages. I see so many tutorials but I wish they’d explain what scales they’re using over the progressions. For instance, the song I Am The Resurrection by Stone Roses has the most unbelievable bluesy scales & licks he uses all over the guitar. I’ve been doing the tutorial for that song by a guy named Ant, but the way it jumps around the guitar, I could just never figure out which scale or shape he was using. It’s worth a listen here on KZbin. Anyway, thanks for this Mike.

Harmonic minor in CAGED: move the 7th note one fret up, use the same positions. you are welcome :)

Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I know the pentatonic shapes perfectly and i understand how the caged system works, i just struggle with finding the roots cause i never like sat and learned the fretboard. So my question is should i learn the fretboard and be perfectly comfortable with it and only then practice with caged system, or should practice and as i do all the roots connecting try to learn and navigate through the fretboard?

so basically.. the 1-5 box positions around that fret based on where the chord falls within "CAGED".. all focusing on the root of each chord.

My problem is that I understand caged, and I also understand that 99% of the time we don't play the full shape, which is good b/c my arthritic hands are fucked when I try to do so. And I even get the idea of playing arpeggios to solo using caged, and even understand how the shapes fit into the blues scale, and I know the pentatonic scale. BUT...I can't fucking apply it!! I know I just need to practice, but I need someone to just give me a straight away practice routine to burn this shit into my head, b/c right now I'm all over the place with caged.
