In this video we test out the recording range and audio quality of the built-in mic from the RODE WIRELESS GO microphone system - and show how this all works using a smartphone running the FiLMiC Pro app.
Keep in mind for best results you can attach a higher-end microphone to the transmitter instead of using the built-in mic (but that mic is pretty good and creates an all-in-one solution for some jobs).

Deselect Auto Gain😱!!! No one... NO ONE has shown how to use mics with smartphones. Damn, I’ve been hooking up the new Deity v-mic D3 Pro shotgun mic and thought, that’s it. Blake, love it man. Everyone shows how to turn gain down on DSLR’s to improve external mic hook ups. But no, again, NO ONE has shown what to do when using a smartphone like the iPhone X or XS. If you have more to offer about this subject I’d sure love to hear your advise and opinions on this. Thanks Blake

Blake, LOVE this video!!! 2 questions on it, and the Filmic App. 1-Distance, recording a live performance, would this benefit, as it would be so much closer to the musicians, or do you think it would over modulate? 2-the slider (@ the 2:55 mark), and sorry for the simplistic question, but is that to limit the input? Meaning, if it is loud, slide it down to the left, and if quiet, slide to the right? Thanks
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 1. Having it close is normally always better. You can control the levels so they won’t over modulate or use the auto gain. Would suggest testing it though. 2. Yes, you’re setting the input levels and you use the VU meters to do this based on the input signal.

Hi, I have just bought this exact set up but using an iPhone 11 Pro max. Filmic pro just won't recognise the ext Rode microphone. I've tried using another SC7 patch cable and its still not recognising it. The lightning adapter works with headphones so its not that. The only other thing I can think is that the output jack from the rode receiver is faulty? The receiver is pairing with the mic transmitter.
@iphoneographers

Hmmm. Yeah sounds like an issue with the jack as you say. Try connecting it to another device or camera to see if it works. But the setup does work with FP and iPhone 11 Pro Max as that’s what we’re currently using too.

@@iphoneographers I have the black on one end gray on the other and red cord in between which I ordered online after watching a video on what I needed to use a wireless mic with an iphone. I attached that to the iphone dongle and I have also tried the LC-C35 (The Saramonic LC-C35 is a short audio cable with an integrated analog-to-digital converter and an Apple Certified Lightning Connector that enables you to connect audio signals (such as the output of a wireless microphone receiver) directly to the Lightning port on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.) So not sure why not working with either of those. I have never really had success trying to use wireless mics with my 70D but i just upgraded the firmware and set up my audio record to manual. Cant figure it out. I have a message into Rode since I cant get it to work with either my 70D or my iphone X.

Wow, with no AC it’s an amazing sound. Blake, another question. I use LumaFusion and everything really on the new iPad Pro to edit my footage and put it up on my channel. But... Is there any post editing/processing for audio on iPad or App Store? I used to use Audacity on my laptop, and that little program did everything I needed and for a great price. It would cleaned up all background noise and would help me fine and enhance folks speaking that I was speaking to or interviewing. I’d love to find something that could do that on the new Pro. If you know of anything similar to Audacity I’d appreciate some direction, or another video. Thanks again Blake.

Hi Blake, Great video. Lots of questions. :-( I have an iPhone XR. Using it for real estate videos and client interview, sometimes interviewing 2 peoplle at same time. I have a Smooth Q Gimbal....and bought the Apple adapter and a Bilken splitter. Questions: 1) Is it worth upgrading to Smooth 4 gimbal? Does that work well with the XR and FilMiC Pro? 2) Lighting: What's the best light I can attach to a soft shoe for my real estate videos? I'll have all lights on , and the appropriate windows, but is there a smaller/but quality good light you recommend? 3) The W-Go is highly recommended. But, how do i ask questions live, and record 2 people at the same time??? Overall: Wish I would have waited for the 11 with the ultra wide camera, but oh well. Thanks in advance for answering all of these questions. Thank you!!!!!!!! -Bob Brandt, St. Louis p.s. Stay safe and healthy!
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, let’s see if I can help.., 1. Yes the Smooth 4 is better, but it’s weight capacity isn’t great. You might also look at the Smooth Q2. It’s nice too. 2. Lighting for a room? That’s tough for on camera kinds, but would look at the Aputure AL-M9 or MC. Both pretty bright but very light and affordable. 3. You would need two mics to do that and a mixer to get both signals into the phone/app. Or use a Zoom recorder or similar to record and then sync it in editing. Hope that makes sense. :)

Awesome video. Why did you have to turn of the auto gain control! I recorded a church but the audio was low. I'm wondering now if it's because the auto gain control? Church audio is hard to record because of clipping when they yell. Any advice? I was about 15 feet away with the camera and the "dead cat" was on. Thanks.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much always want to set the levels manually with an external mic and it also lowers the noise floor. The auto gain can raise that when there’s silence. Typically would set it to where it peaks around -12 then boost sound in post. Sometimes -9 or -6 work too depending on the shoot. Just don’t want it to over-modulate by hitting 0.

@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
Really think you just need to test it. We have not used an XLR mic yet with it. But, we have a cable that is XLR to 3.5mm and it works really well. The main issue is most XLR mics need power. So you just need to make sure it’s one that takes batteries since you can’t send phantom power. Our plan is to use something like the Rode SmartLav most of the time.

Are you using Automatic Gain Correction? If so it can raise the noise floor in between voices or whatever you’re recording. Try turning that off and set the levels manually. Referring to using Filmic Pro... If that’s not the case then there might be a preamp issue or a cable problem. That mic is actually quite good and should provide clean audio (as long as you’re in a quiet location of course too) so might need to get it replaced.

Apparently when you connect the Wireless Go’s it automatically selects the correct one but they are presumptuous to think everyone is going to know that. RØDE doesn’t mention this because they not going to talk about Filmic Pro and other app usage and Filmic Pro didn’t seem to address it either. So the answer is plug in mics and open Filmic app and done and chosen automatically.

@iphoneographers 2 жыл бұрын
To clarify, those settings only apply to the iPhone built-in mics. When you plug an external mic in the built-in mics no longer work, so those settings don’t matter. But when not using an external mic you can choose which internal iPhone mic you want the app to use. The most common is back, which is on the lens mount side. So using any external mics including wireless just ignore those settings.
