I record through my Apollo with light compression. Then when I’m mixing the vocals, I use the virtual mix rack as a plug-in. I normally use the sony c800 emulators.

That is what I was wondering now that the offer is back on! I love apollo technology to record already printed signals and save on DSPs so the Slate one might be fun as you said only if out first in the chain without any unison technology plug activated on insert in the uad console. I actually use the ml1 into my hardware 1073 into bluey 1176 to la 2a..while tracking..i mainly use the emulations if given a session i didnt track!

If you’re wanting the vibe from the Avalon while tracking, just put the preamp in the slot UNDERNEATH the Unison slot and set console to monitor only. I’ve heard about people tracking just fine with the Unison and the modeling afterwards with plenty of success. Good vid, though, dude. I was conflicted about this same thing.

Exactly... Only thing is that your suggested method is no longer utilizing the unison preamp technology. When you use the preamp as an insert you will notice that it used significantly less dsp power. as an insert underneath the unison slot, and the sonic impact on the signal is different as well. You will definitely still get decent results, but most people are paying for the unison preamps to take advantage of the unison modeling technology.

@@Callthatreverendmusic if that’s the case, you could always use a line out from the Apollo right back into the unison preamp just like you would with outboard gear. Again, that’s just for tracking vibe.

Apollo is a clean mic pre. It is no different then the Slate VM-1 preamp. You record with the apollo, and up the mic pre and emu post recording. Monitor it with the slate plugins on the return track.

As has been mentioned by other comments cool looking studio :) Ive been researching this and opinion seems to be that the apollo interfaces have a clean sound . It was mentioned while i was researching this that the Apollo duo should be able to hit 99.9% mic emulation if used directly in the signal path. I was wondering though whats the difference with the VMS-One pre amp? is it designed in some way to enhance the mic emulation or just basically a good pre amp? Do you agree with the 99.9%? I havent found any comparison videos to check it out. Thanks.

Nice question! I’m waiting for the ML1 to go on sale but I was also looking to see if there’s an advantage to the Slate VMS One over the Apollo twin MK2 (or one of the Apollo interfaces). I know there’s an entire ecosystem around Slate so do you lose out on any of that if I combined Apollo + ML1 (seems to work for Reverend)

I don’t understand because on my VMS one, I use the emulation also use the unison preamp, and when it’s in the daw, I can switch through microphones and change a different sound for each microphone, or I can do it your way, use as many plugins as I want and not run out of DSP because I have a UAD2 8 core satellite

Rev. Great Video. I got a question. I have the Apollo Twin MKII with the Slate VMS ML-1 mic. I'm new the that Slate ML-1 is there a way to track live? Hear how it's going to sound of the emulator before I start recording. 7:28 example have the Trimmer Meter moving while changing to different mics to hear the sound.

If you have the VMS emulation in your inserts and you are monitoring from the DAW then you will be able to hear. You can also put the Apollo emulations in your inserts as well... I think that is what you are asking...hopefully I'm right, but if I'm not understanding the question, let me know. We'll figure it out together.

@@Callthatreverendmusic I got it to work. Here Is what I did. I wanted to be able to test the Sounds before I recorded no afterward. In the Customize Display Bar Check Software & Audio Monitoring Turn on the Software Monitoring (Green Button on the bar) I know you know this lol Press the Record & Input monitoring button (R/I) Then you can test it before you record it.

You can, but not using the unison preamp feature. There is a sonic difference between the Avalon as an insert effect vs in unison preamp mode.

I love the TLM103. I would tell you to get both lol. But if you have to choose, get the slate. Reason? You are practically getting several mics for the price of one. If you record different voices/instruments, you will appreciate versatility of the Slate

Short answer, yes you can use the Unison Emulation. I am sure the Slate’s good. I think the UA Sphere is better, if you can afford it.

Hey bro.... The best Mic, always has to do with your situation, the voice of the person being recorded or the instrument, sometimes It's how well the mic pairs with other hardware in your chain. However, I will tell you that this is definitely in my opinion the most versatile Mic in the 500's / $600 range. I would tell you that it is the most versatile mic under $1,000. And just remember if you're considering purchasing it now, that normally it sells for $800. This $500 price is a sale that they usually only run once or twice a year. Lastly, it's versatility does not sacrifice quality. So, without knowing your specific situation, I would say The ML 1 Is the safest mic You can purchase with $500, and it's the one most likely to have the ability to give you the results you are looking for.

I got the solo and within a week wished I got a twin. Once you start using the UAD plugins you'll want them on every channel and the solo doesn't have enough processing power

@@Callthatreverendmusic yea thats true well im planning to use only the free pligins i wanted autotune but is no longer free when u buy the apollo :( i still can use it on my daw. i just dont know how much latency i will get. i think the new solo can handle at least 3 plugins? pre amp compressor and eq ? i do only one track at the time

You honestly don't have to do all of that since studio one allows you to record plugins on input, you can literally keep uad setup and still utilize the slate mics on input in studio one

Yes indeed. That’s a great interface. I don’t think you should be concerned. Furthermore, I think slate is aware that their preamp is the weak link in the vms system. That is why they choose to do so much more promo on the mic.

I doubt it. Spark does not include all of their plug-ins. But you gave me a great idea. I’ll do a video where we compare the Avalon plug-in as an insert versus as a Unison preamp.

The yellow tracks at 4:00 all have the same plugins from what it looks like. Couldnt those all be routed to the same bus with those plugins to save cpu? Legit question not tryna come off the wrong way btw

No offense taken, I just didn’t know what you were referring to. The tracks in yellow are on a vox bus.. but they do have some slight differences in the plugins on that chain. The 4 verse vox tracks include background and ad libs with different settings than the lead.
