Hey Skipper. I live and fish here in Northern midwest, where its gettin really cold in Illinois. We dont have like the best places to fish. For that, we go oto Wisconsin. But I learned today a VERY important, fundamental of fishing. Match hook size with the fish you want to catch. A great highlight from your video. A fish with small mouth will need small hook. Now i understand why i use a small hook and i only get panfish, bluegill or sunfish and hoping to catch trophy bass. Ive been fishing crazy using like a3/0 or 4/0 on a drop shot - but even tsmaller fish just swim away. Thank you Skipper for this awesome learning. Edgar

100% depends on the day, one day the fish are on the bite and the next day nothing even in identical conditions. I prefer to use circle hooks in a rugged rocky areas as the normal "J" hook tends to get stuck in the coral

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). kzbin.infoUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

The next time you fish that pier use a trolley rig it keeps your bait in the perfect place for kings, mackerel, and tarpon. There's a lot less of a chance of losing fish, like when you bottom fish.

You can free-line pinfish from that pier and catch grouper off the rocks 50 to 75 yards out from the pier.. That's one of my favorite places to fish.. Mangroves snapper, Spanish/King mackerel, Jackes... Anything and everything swims through there...

In NJ and I think other Northeastern states if you are bait fishing for stripers you have to use circle hooks per the regulations so if it's the spring or fall runs you're pretty much stuck with the circle regardless of the species you are targeting unless its a really small hook.
@reelislandboyzoutdoorz3 ай бұрын
Facts. Only circle hooks with live bait or cut bait.

Those passing showers... I was on a pier on the Outer Banks of North Carolina when the rain came. And boy did it come! The spots were coming in two at a time. Everyone was getting drenched. There was a shelter in the middle of the pier but no one wanted to leave the bite. We kept looking at the shelter and at each other laughing the whole time...and kept fishing.

In some states where striped bass range, you have to use inline circle hooks now if you're targeting bass. J Hooks and O'Shaughnessy are illegal for stripers in NY and CT. Offset hooks are also illegal for stripers in both states.

@christopherjenkins23733 жыл бұрын
You know certain locales require you to use circle hooks especially if you are catching fish that must be released. On the east coast where I fish some states require circle hooks for stripers. Those long J hooks are more likely to be swallowed by the fish and if you release it they could die from that hook. I know I’ve been bitten off many times by Sheepshead because I had the wrong hook. I knew I was going to keep them to eat so I used J hooks and sometimes treble hooks. Your advice is sound but check the regulations where you are. I’m fixing to leave on a trip next week. You’ll like this. I’m taking 18 different vintage reels with me. I have 170 vintage spinning reels that are mostly surf reels. You would love it. My last trip I used only vintage French Mitchells but this time I’m using Daiwa, Shimano, Penn. Bretton, and Shakespeare among others. All of them are over 40 years old. There will be three of us using them. This was a great video! You had a lot of great advice. I’d love a video on how you fish for sheepshead particularly from a pier or by pilings. --- Chris

That's a great reminder. Here there are three states close together and you have to be careful since all three stupidly have widely varying regulations for the same body of water. I keep a "cheat sheet" so I don't goof up.

@Hey Skipper That's actually very common when they are feeding on glass minnows. They will gorge themselves until they literally cannot fit anything else in! When you see them tearing up a school on the surface, you can be sure of two things: 1- You're about to catch a ton of Spanish. 2- You're about to spend a whole lot of time cleaning up. P.S.- In Florida you are legally required to use non-stainless steel, non-offset circle hooks when targeting Mangrove Snapper. I'm not trying to nitpick, but with the size of your audience, it would be a good idea for you to promote responsibility when it comes to our fisheries. That law in particular not only saves fish from getting gut hooked, but also helps keep our reefs from being littered with stainless steel hooks that last SO MUCH LONGER and are dangerous for reef life and divers alike. If you don't have it yet, you should check out FWC's free app called Fish Rules. It will check your exact location and list every applicable law, size limit, and bag limit by species, including any local areas with specific limitations (Florida has lots of these). It also has several photos of each species to help with identification. It's incredibly handy and completely free.
