Every country in latin America uses it because most cellphone companies give free unlimited data specifically for Whatsapp and the app is free so it's technically free texting

WhatsApp is THE messenger in wide parts of the world. It has social media features but as far as I know it' primarily just a messenger that replaced SMS, and because everyone's using it, there is no reason to switch to a different one.

The iPhone is way more common in the US than the rest of the world and it has its own messenger. So I guess if you don't know anyone with an android you don't need whatsapp.

Based on the comments seems a lot of places use whatsapp. What are the countries that don't it? What do they use? I can't imagine using regular text having just a few hundred characters and paying for each one.
