I used both while in the Marine corps the older system is much warmer. I do use the new gortex cover with the old system because I like the face net. If you buy three of the poncho liners with the zipper you can add them or remove them as needed to control your comfort level. Much easier to wash. You will not suffocate if you close it all up while inside because gortex breaths. Nice post

*Pro tip for the camelbak... You can attach an inline filter to it, fill the camelbak straight from your water source, and drink filtered water right from the straw. It elimates the fuss of having to refill the squeeze bag and the fuss of squeezing itself. The only downside is maintenance, as you're gonna have to make sure you clean the bag and straw thoroughly before storing it long-term. But its not much of a downside if you clean your camelbak regularly anyway.* *And for those with ALICE packs, a lumbar camelbak fits like a glove perfectly into the radio pouch. Almost like the radio pouch was made for the lumbar CamelBak.*

Like the review! Not sure if anyone has said this in the comments yet (if they have, sorry for repeating it) Gortex is the brand name of PTFE which stands for polytetrafluoroethylene which is really the same thing. Other interesting fact about PTFE is that is the same thing as Teflon in nonstick cook wear.

Regarding the modular 3 sleeping bag. When using all three pieces the black cold weather bag goes inside the green patrol bag. This is because the black bag has a neck baffle and the green bag does not. Also never completely enclose yourself in the system because you will suffocate. The Gore-tex bivy bag completely seals for when you are not inside the system.

Goretex does not stop the flow of air. You can put a fan on one side and feel the air coming through the other side . It is impossible to suffocate when surrounded by goretex..where do you people get your info from ?

( If the wind goes through it it's not goretex) they make a gas permeable goretex just for the reason that you could suffercate if zipped up ( ever civilian goretex bivi has this warning on it for that reason) the Dutch goretex vivid are the gas permeable one had one and you sleep fine zipped up my old goretex one no

For that Sawer water filter, you might want a 2 foot long piece of clear tubing leading to the bladder just so that if there is any river water on the outside of that bag he is squeezing, it does not drip into that bladder he is filling!

I suggest silicone tubing. I have filters that came with this, that where folded up for years on end packed away. Springs right to shape and no kinks. I also carry an inline charcoal filter for metals, chemicals or whatever and chlorine dioxide (ie:aquamira) for the last step in case I cant boil. cheap setup but you could drink from an african savanah pond if you had to.

Goretex is a PTFE treatment which is basically teflon. PTF doesn't warranty the same performances but it possibly can be as good as what's branded as Goretex.

Love your father and son team. Thanks for the side by side review of these sleep systems. I bought a surplus MSS system last year. I just don't think the system is going to be as warm as my down puffy bags. For example, I have two 20 degree down bags, one expands to 5" and one expands to 6". That's the measurement I take by laying the bag out on the ground, giving it a day or two to fully loft, then measuring how high the top(chest area) is off the ground. Typically 5" is good down to 25F and 6" down to 15F. With the intermediate bag inside the patrol bag I am getting about 4.5" of loft. I recognize mine is surplus, not new, and a new system could have more loft. I also question the longevity of synthetic insulation in these vs down. What does your MSS loft measure? I am in the northeast and in the winter I'll still use my 20 degree bag and sleep in puffy(down) jacket and pants and have been plenty warm on my coldest night of -15F. Benefit of the down pants is also being warm around camp; our winter mountains are usually covered in feet of snow so no fire.

Hey thanks, texasroots! You hit the nail on the head with the layers you're wearing with your bags. I've heard of people claiming to sleep deep in the negatives while wearing nothing but boxers and t-shirts in these military bags and I personally just don't see how. I've tried that in the mid twenty degree temps and was cold! The military bags are part of system built around base layers and outer layers (silk weights all the way to happy suit) for extreme cold. The patrol bag alone is supposed rated for between 50f/30f degrees and the black bag 30f/-10f alone. The system is said to provide insulation down to -30f with proper layers. I can't speak to that because we don't get anywhere near that cold here down in northeastern NC. I believe Climashield is the insulation in the bags and I'm guessing the loft is not going to be the same as you would have with a down bag (I don't have down).

For Prepairdness concerns, this is a no brainer. Basically 4 season vs 3 season. I was in the back of my pick up with a Lear topper and BedRug in 20 degrees f, waiting for the local 511 Store in Knoxville to open for their grand opening. I had a Mr. Buddy LP heater. I shut it off to see if it would be needed. I did not wake up until the next morning and I stayed warm as toast. I am in the Foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains. I keep these bags in the back of my truck in the winter for emergency prepairdness. I feel confident if my truck broke down and there was no cell service, I would not have any exposure to the elements issues or concerns. Not only would I not freeze, but I would also be comfortable until assistance arrived.

@@robertsbushcraft Hi Roberts, Prepping is much more than that. Although being a minamalist has benefits, when you are interested in emergency prepairdness, comfort eliminates stress. My wife and I are not youngsters any more. I prep hoping to have my preps make every day life (or emergencies) easier if I need them. Weather it is just helping somebody find an earing or contact lens (because I have a flashlight), or getting some use of a milti tool that I or others might not otherwise have. So if there is a need for a sleeping bag to come out of my emergency gear, weather it is due to a vehicle break down or a change of the weather for the worst, I will choose the 4 season Extreme Cold Weather, Military Sleep System. I do change some of my preps based on the season, and there obviously would be times that Extreme Cold Weather Gear gear might not be necessary (like a warm summer night), but if it is packed with my emergency gear, if it is not unreasonable I will pack the best I can with me. Keep up the great videos.

Great training in using proper gear. You might try turning on your side if it is raining while you close the inner face cover. Who ever told you to put the thinner layer on the out side facing the cold was badly mistaken .the thinner layer will not slow down the cold before it reached the thicker layer. When you put a thin layer first you are just waiting space . It's like putting a t shirt over your coat and going out side . Not to smart. When you dress for cold weather camping you dress in layers. You put the thinnest layer closest to your body and add thicker layers as you go away from your skin. You don't put on the coat first do you ? No so why would you think you would do that with sleeping layers? Because some idiot told you to ? Hey just so you know in very cold weather the green patrol bag goes on the outside of the black intermediate bag. This is because the black bag has a cold air baffle the green patrol bag does not. Also most important Never completely enclose your self in this sleep system you will suffocate and die. It should only be completely enclosed when you are not inside it.

It will work either way, but, through use, we've found that we've been warmer in all instances with the green bag inside of the black bag. The real key to any sleep system is layering your garments. With the proper layering, you can leave either bag at home and do just fine (depending on your definition of cold). As for suffocating? I've never come close. These are not air-tight and allow for sufficient oxygen intake to sustain life. The real danger is the buildup of condensation inside of the bivy while completely enclosed. Condensation builds and eventually, evaporation begins. Evaporation is a process of cooling. Gortext is stretch ptfe so yes this is gortex. It's a non trademark description. I believe DuPont has a trademark on the name gortex but anyone can make a ptfe membrane between fabric which is what gortex is

That's how it was designed. Through our use of it we've found the system to be warmer with the green bag inside of the black bag.

@@duffelbagdrag 1. Something to that effect is mentioned in the video. 2. The real reason that black goes inside the green is because the black ECW bag has the storm/draft collar whereas the patrol bag does not. In extreme cold, the warm air must stay in and cold air out. Regardless, when this set is used I have a way that I like to use it, and that is the green inside of the black. Is it warmer one way over the other? Hard for me to tell, honestly. The layers that are worn are fantastic cold buffers. Can you wear your sweater outside of your puffy coat? Sure! I just prefer it the other way around. The USMC sleep system is designed for the coyote patrol bag to fit inside of the ECW black bag, and then into the USMC IBC (Improved bivy cover). I'm not sure why they designed it like this, but, I like it better than the older MMSS.

Great video. I have watched it a few times. I realize it has been a couple of years since you made this video. You mention that the USMC ISS is a little tighter fit that the MSS. I have looked for the width measurement for the USMC components and cannot find them. Would you mind measuring the flat across the shoulder width of the USMC system some time when it is convenient, and if you still have an MSS, it would be nice to compare apples to apples. @@robertsbushcraft Thanks. I think I would measure it zipped up and flat from edge to edge at the widest point and the elbow level. Since there is no insulation, this times two would be the approximate circumference of the bag, and could be compared to other things to get a good idea of the size. Pictures on your web site let me approximate this at just over 34”. The MSS is reported to be about 34.5”, so that is on par. Maybe my estimations are off, or maybe the sleeping bags are causing the tighter feel.

Having been issued and slept in several military systems, all over the world. If it rains or snows and you want to lower your condensation, vent the side of the bivy low enough that water/sleet/snow does not get in. Otherwise I get a bad headache when I wake up and my bag is wet from all the breathing/condensation. Just my recommendation but having an air vent definitely helps me sleep better.

ptfe is the same thing they spray into nonstick pans, this is what gives it the slick feel and a waterproof outer, gortex is a synthetic fiber, weird because they seem like the same material. lol, I've only used the army one, when I was in this is the one, we used and i can testifies that it is tough as nails.

Second time watching this video. And, same question comes up about which way to use the three season bag and the extended cold-weather putting the patrol green bag on the outside is typically the prescribed method. however, you explain you would normally put your big coat on the outside and your sweater on the inside. My thought was and I believe this is the case that the green patrol bag is the larger of the two bags. It’s able to have the room inside to accommodate the black extended cold-weather bag. That was my thought at least why they would have you put the smaller bag inside the larger green summer weight three season bag. A little bit because I understand maybe when you’re saying you’re a big coat as in the heavier more insulated coat being the extended cold-weather bag would go on the outside. When I’m thinking about bigger as in size this is why I think green larger capacity bag goes outside of the more tight fitting winter bag. Would be interested if you noticed the size difference that the Summer weight three season patrol green bag is larger than the winter bag? I will try what you mention put the more insulated bag on the outside. I have a Czechoslovakian kit that has a much larger summer bag with bug mesh screen edit definitely is designed to go on the outside with the winter thick insulated bag going inside the summer bag. If I was to switch this the summer that bag would be bunched up inside the tight winter weight bag making a very tight fit. Maybe the United States winter bag is more roomier. Personally I don’t on the black winter bag, however I have other winter weight bags they tend to seem to be smaller in size than the patrol bag. Just a little bit of my thoughts it just came back into mind after I watch this part of the video again. Thanks guys really enjoy watching your videos very well done. God bless

I do believe the green patrol bag is slightly larger than the black cold weather bag. I think perhaps we didn't communicate our point very well in the video, and that is simply our preference of putting the thinner green patrol bag inside of the thicker black cold weather bag. We're not saying that the design is wrong, we're simply stating a preference, and trying to explain the reasoning with the example of wearing your sweater outside of your coat. The way we use these bags simply feels warmer to us. I think the comments directed towards that part of this video are taking our preference of use and misinterpreting it as "hey you all are doing it wrong, do it this way", and that's not the case. We just like the patrol bag inside of the cold weather bag.

i like the video but the black bag goes inside the green bag. The intermediate black bag has a barrier that lays on the chest to keep the draft out of the main bag when you breath, you have to be in the black intermediate bag for the draft barrier to work. because your chest rises and falls, this causes a small draft in and out. goretex maitenance products and dwr can keep it rain proof. ptfe is the membrane that keeps the rain out. goetex is a brand name.

I have just purchased the 3 season bivy and am wondering how often you have to re-apply a dwr coating with it being nylon instead of goretex.? I have the mmss and have owned it for years and it still beads off water and am wondering about the 3 season bivy, also iv been hunting on ebay for the extreme cold weather bag and seen it twice both times it had rips and they still wanted 200 plus canadian for it . do you know of surplus shops that carry the ecwb? as for your feet getting cold try out wiggys insulated lammalite socks :)

We use the Nikwax TXDirect Wash-In and Waterproofing Wash-In amzn.to/2UpQEC1 and have had good results. Before adding in the tarps over us we'd sleep in these and stay dry even after an "out of nowhere" rain shower in the middle of the night. We also use the Nikwax TXDirect Spray-On Waterproofing amzn.to/2Uu9esA just as extra precaution. I reached out to GORE-TEX last year and they mentioned that for outer DWR they suggest a spray on coating for better results. So, we do both. Wash in and spray on. We purchased our bags for 19.99 USD a piece at Hull Street Outlet Inc in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Give them a call [phone] and see if they still have some! We'll look into the Wiggy's as well thanks for the suggestion!

just to give you and idea of what iv experienced in Canada is iv slept comfortable with proper layering (with poly long johns,the l3 fleece and regular poly clothes, the l7 big puff suit) in the old mmss down to -35c not counting wind chill, which the goretex blocks out completely but i dislike the side zippers as they are a pain to get done up, id much prefer the central zip, and wonder how the improved system with the ecw bag would handle the arctic temps we get here in winter?.

That is COLD temps! We don't get anywhere near that cold here in North Carolina! I honestly can't tell a difference between how well each system keeps me warm. In our climate here I'd have no issue taking either one with me. But as mentioned in the video rarely do we see single digit temps, and, negative temps are even more rare. But what we have experienced here is that both bags do keep us warm when paired with proper layered clothing. The performance of the bags in my opinion is on a fairly even field. It's the extras that make me choose the IBC and 3S Bag with ECWB over the older MMSS. The center zip, the improved bivvy, and I happen to be a coyote brown junkie.

We haven't had our hands on the MOLLE II full size ruck just yet. That said, comparing the specs, this FILBE main is not going to give much in the area of weight. Empty, with frame, belt, and should straps you're looking at nine pounds.

I had the camouflage sleep system till I retired in 2008. USMC. But I not familiar with the brown/tan sleep system. Did the tan bag system replace the camouflage system? What years was it in the Military? Did the Marine Corps use it?

The 3S (Three Season) sleep system replaced the older MMSS (woodland) for the USMC somewhere in the mid 2000's. The IBC (Improved Bivy Cover) is a fantastic step above the older MMSS (woodland) bivy. The newer sleep system consists of pretty much the same components as the older MMSS: a 3 season bag (patrol bag), with SealLine waterproof bag, Extreme Cold Weather Bag with SealLine waterproof bag, IBC (Improved Bivy Cover), and a mesh storage sack. Another cheap budget method if you cant find usmc patches, is to use shoe goo, and bits of nylon or cloth. just make sure waterproofing sprays or coatings are cleaned away from patch area first or ot may only last a year or two.

The directions are pretty specific with the MSS, summer bag outside the winter bag. They are even sized like that to maximize loft. What you show here is 100% wrong. The only sleep system designed to put the summer bag in the cold weather bag is the new British knock off of the Carinthia sleep system.

@@robertsbushcraft sorry for the very late reply, I somehow missed this comment. You make an interesting point and I will try it however, my main summer bag is an anomaly. The material is insanely strong compared to the other USGI patrol bags I have and it is two colored, I haven't ever seen another like it and grabbed it when I saw it in the bin. It still has the same NSN but I can't find any information on this variant. It is very similar, if not identical, the the sleeping bags once made by Drop Zone in Edmonton many years ago.

The first part is a great example of why not to use a bladder for backpacking. To slow and cumbersome to refill. If you were really wanting to use it it would be better to fill it with dirty water and put the filter inline with the drinking tube. The measurement on the bladder to see how much water you had? The Sawyer bags are marked so you should have know you had 16oz.

Personally, I like to filter the water before putting it into my hydration bladder. It just seems to make more sense to me to put clean water in the reservoir when time permits, which, it usually does. If I recall correctly the Sawyer bag (16oz) was not completely full so we sort of guessed at what we filtered into the bladder. Thanks for watching and commenting towermonkey2000!

All these look ok, but they need a boot storage pouch on the side near the top because if your foot gear needs to come off, they need to stay dry and unfrozen!

The boots can fit near the head in both bivy sacks. One boot on each side of your head and you're good to go.

Mine don't carry a terrible odor, and I clean them before bringing them inside the bivy. If they are too wet and muddy, they get the treatment you mentioned.@@duffelbagdrag

I went through arctic survival SERE school with this system in 2013. We slept in our skivies at -20 and was fine. Not really sure why you think that’s a misconception with this system.

In the USMC skivvies consisted of a t-shirt and boxers and I get cold in these bags in just skivvies at 20 degrees. Both systems are designed to go into the negative extremes when wearing various layers of extreme cold weather clothing (lightweight/midweight drawers and shirts/jackets/trousers, etc.). The newer USMC sleep system outlines what to wear in layer combination with these bags in specified temperature ranges. If you were pushing -20 degree temps in these bags with just skivvies you are most definitely a warmer sleeper than I am! Were you taught to sleep in just skivvies or was that your personal preference? We don't get those extreme temps here in NC so we can only test with NC ambient.

I do like the new United States Marine three season sleeping bag because of the sinner zip. But pound for pound which ones the lighter one of the two and are they equal on keeping you decently warm that in the patrol bag.

As far as weight is concerned, the newer USMC issue sleep system is lighter than the older MMSS. The USMC system replaced the snaps and buttons for loops and tabs in the bags and bivy. The bivy is slightly smaller and that helped with weight reduction. Plus, it's coyote brown. I love that color.

As far as warmth is concerned, they both are fairly even in comfort. Both systems rely on the user wearing proper base layers. Six degrees Fahrenheit is the coldest we've slept in the newer system, ten degrees being the coldest for the older MMSS. With base layers, we could not tell much of a difference, if any, between the two in terms of warmth.

We purchased our bags for 19.99 USD a piece at Hull Street Outlet Inc in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Give them a call [phone] and see if they still have some! Maybe they'll ship them to you, I don't see why they wouldn't. Keep in mind thought that those bags have been repaired and will have pieces of the ripstop tape on them. But for 20$ USD per bag you can't go wrong.

Ive used a small smooth pebble to attach to the ridge line of my shelter with cordage to keep the Bivy up off of my face at night..tree branch works well too when without a tarp or poncho. Bad Ass System. MMSS
