Paul, I think you’re using the bag inside out. The tag on the bottom should be outside. The loops on the bottom sides and top are for securing in the ECW black bag or the improved bivy. Great system. To stay worm below freezing, the trick is not to wear too many clothes. Add the zippered Usmc poncho liner and with waffle tops and bottoms should get you way below freezing comfortably.

The MSS is awesome when I was stationed in Alaska we spent some very cold nights in the mountains in the winter and I’m still here.

Used that bag a shit ton in the marines and it kept me extremely warm and also used with the pancho liner and also wearing ur base layers and maybe head layer and on really cold nights I used the Bivy and also used a tarp to protect against the wind even more

For military Temp ratings you have to understand they aren't "comfort" (women/ cold sleepers) or low comfort (men/warm sleepers) per the EN ratings. They are a survival rating over a specific time period of hours, that escapes my mind at the moment, per the procurement requirements. So feeling a little chilly in the mid 30s is expected with a 20+ "Pentagon" rating is basically a EN low comfort rating of 40°.

Maybe when you aren't using it you hang it opened in your closet so the insulation fibres can stay puffed up. And only compress it when you are heading out. Just a thought. Cheers 👍🐕🤠

Definitely a must with down, not totally necessary with synthetic. But none the less, a good habit to get into.

Good breakdown of these 2 items. I haven't had the opportunity to use either one, but I'm going be looking into sleep systems and dry bags. So thanks for covering them. Stay safe.

Popular rumor is take a sleeping bag's rated comfort degree and add 10 degrees to get a general estimate as to actual comfort

That's pretty accurate for most manufacturers. I could only go off the specs available for this bag for the video and my experience.

Hi from the UK, neat video, clear and precise. I was sent here by “The Corporal”. The sleeping bag looks thin but packs up half the size of my Snugpak Elite 4. The dry bag is really nice, I like the breather, better than the Lowe Alpine one I have for bike packing. Didn’t see how good the zip is on the USMC but the centre (center) zips a winner as I am always jumping into mine and forgetting which side it zips on. Note the “special forces” Snugpak has a central zip but it is £££. Andrew on Ranger Survival and Fieldcraft was stressing how for a military application it is double important to have a big zip that will undo in one blast without sticking, in case you need to face the enemy or take a quick leak 🤣 something my Snugpak doesn’t do well and he proved this on his review. The USMC one looks a damn sight better than my old 1968 British Army one! Also nice to see somebody pushing the bag in to store it, I got told off years ago for rolling mine up as not only do you trap air, you also push all the insulation about and it can end up all in one place.

The black panel on the bottom that holds the straps is not glued on, it is plastic welded. The plastic of the panel is fused with the plastic of the bag to create an extremely strong bond. Just, fyi.

MSS is great when it's far below freezing but my 3 season go-to is a sil-nylon tarp, a blue foam pad, a faux fleece throw blanket, my woobie and poncho. Under 4 pounds for shelter and sleep and I can get cozy just about anywhere.

@@adaptablesurvival I might be medium-speed with some drag but I'm happy to go "get some" and someone will have to pry my woobie from these cold, dead phalanges after I make them pay full-retail for the privilege. :D (What can I say? I like to party.)

I have the full MSS system, but im too tall for the black bag. Just bought this one, hopefully I can sub them out. I think the 3 season bag will go really well with the green patrol bag that comes with the MSS

I would be very interested to see the Black bag video as well! Hopefully in that video there would be a comparison of backed sizes in that same compression bag.

Thanks for the info on the length. Was going to ask about that . Lower 30’s is about as low as we get but being capable of going lower would be a plus. Thanks for the review. Have a good one

It's definitely a solid option for 3 season. Partner it with a liner, woobie or swagman and it'll definitely go lower.

Good review Paul! I don't know if you are aware of this (I wasn't): just bought a USMC surplus ZIPPERED poncho liner! I plan on using it with a 100% wool blanket for cooler temps.

Pretty sure the ratings aren't just for comfort, and everyone's comfort level is different. Temp ratings are for the minimal comfort and/or survivability. I have a MSS kit rated to -40 I believe, and it's awesome to the teens for comfort. I haven't tried it lower, but 15F was fine. Normal winter camping I've taken a 32 bag, but I always use a bag liner or my Swagman poncho liner as a bag insert and am good to 20-30. I've even doubled up with another bag while car camping in a tent for those 20-30 nights. I dig that compression bag with the exhaust check valve.

Always told that the temperature rating is all about, you can survive, you want to have a bag rated for 20 degrees warmer than what you think or add a liner in it to keep you warm. Just what I’ve been told, nothing technical or scientific about it….

Will say I bough a military surplus sleep system that has a bivvy, and two bags, one to go inside the other to add warmth. My boys and I use them. Best part of mine is that the last military guy to use it stuffed his pinch liner it, bonus!
@matthewlall4277
@matthewlall4277 Жыл бұрын
Brian Richardson, you are completely correct. The rating on the military bags means you will survive at that rating. Has no bearing on comfort. Your 20 degree colder rating for comfort is a good start. Every person is different and they should know how their gear works with them in different inclement weather. To wait for the day of your outing invites problems or failure. One last thing. What worked for you last year may not this year. We change with our comfort levels with age and our gear, (even stored), wears out. Be prepared by practicing way before your outings.

I've got the old MSS and love it for camping with conveyance but it's so heavy and bulky that it's hard to find ways to fit it into my man portable kit. I prefer to travel light but the bivy is a really nice thing to have.

The pocket on the bag (sealine bag) had the Manuel and how to dress while using the bag if no one told you. Have you tried the MSS patrol bag. Have you search online for the Manuel for the threes season bag? I’m trying to figure which one to purchase. Love your videos keep up the good work.

Great video! Army bag is similar and definitely most comfy at 30. Also, most soldiers or marines will sleep in their silks and waffles which will help the bag
