@13bcoffee2 жыл бұрын
I was blown away when I found out that the statue and photo of the famous flag raising was not the original participants. Apparently 5 other Maines and one Navy sailor raised the original smaller flag earlier that morning on the peak. It was decided that flag was too small so their was a 2nd raising. It's this 2nd raising by 6 Marines that became famous. This group did not come under fire while raising the flag. The original participants missed out on the fame that came from this moment in history. The same photographer filmed both flag raisings. The 2nd flag came from a Navy ship off shore. The goal was to have a flag big enough so that it could be seen from the far distance.

Not sure if your going to boot camp at San Diego or Parris Island. I graduated boot camp way back on 28 December 1973, and it was cold on Parris Island. I wanted to enlist in the Marine Corps because I felt that I would become a better citizen and do my part to defend our country. Instead my dad told me he wanted me to go to college. I will never forgive myself for not serving my country.
@BtRct3 жыл бұрын
My parents told me the same thing, go to college, you are not enlisting. That same year they asked me what I wanted for my 18th birthday. I told them I wanted my birth certificate and social security card. My recruiter says if you won’t get those for me, then he will help me to do so. So I ended up getting those for my 18th birthday and left for MCRD San Diego. Seeing the person I became, they look back and they are glad I did it.

I left home an arrogant know everything teenager. The moment I stood on the yellow footprints I knew I made the right decision. 11 weeks later I was a man. 12 months after that I was in my first of many full on fire fights and at the age of nineteen after a grueling battle that lasted 36 straight hours I was so well trained that it seemed easy. I was home on leave a few months after that partying with my high school buddies on a college campus and I realized I got a much better education, was getting paid and had no debt an so much pride it was hard to remain humble. That was when Reagan was the commander in chief. Under Biden and Obama I told my sins not to go into the military because they had no clue how to use the military and would spent your life for their politics and sleep like a baby...... It is amazing how time have changed
