@vysearcadia5224 жыл бұрын
@@queenbiscuit311 Nah actually if you think about it, it's more of a safety feature. You got two things to worry about.... Nacelles inside the Defiant means one true explosion and they are done for. The whole ship is destroyed, crew and all, though protected for longer than on normal starfleet ships. Also as TheAmateurAsian said, this probably limits the warp field on the Defiant but the Defiant is also smaller so it's design could make sense. The Nacelles outside the main ship means two things: Larger warp field and Proximity Safety Precautions. You need a large warp field for larger ships and these nacelles are gonna need to be huge. This is clearly unsafe to be in proximity of. If just one of them blows on the inside of a "large defiant", everyone is vaporized. And if you want to get real critical, a starships with a broken nacelle (being on the outside of the ships) are easier to repair and replace. And let's not forget that the nacelles and even the neck of the starships like the TOS Consitution series are actually quite HUGE. More than 10x maybe 100x larger than our current battleships in the seas. So to say these areas are not well-armored is baffling as is.

Here's one you missed: It's warp core was one of two new types (along with the Intrepid class's variable geometry nacelles) that didn't _damage subspace in regions that were susceptible._ Starfleet were trialing both concepts, the Sovereign's one was considered better, lack of external moving parts probably helped. And that made retrofitting to older ships a possiblity. This enabled the ship to travel at warp in unstable regions where subspace is vunerable to damage - Note warp does *not damage regular subspace,* if it did then after millions of years of warp capable civilisations there would be no subspace. It was to allow travel in the Hekaras corridor and similar regions (with tetryon radiation) without triggering any effects, a strategically useful ability, especially if encountering similar instabilities during exploration where no rescue ship would know to look if you got in trouble. Or just taking a shortcut or fighting ships in that corridor, especially preventing standard warp drive ships from doing further damage in that area.

@TheCyberloki5 жыл бұрын
I don't think they used Whole Spareparts but could build a provisionally warpcore out of replicated material. The reason for the Intrepid to carry an already assembled one is so they could plug it in and retain warp speeds in hours or even minutes which played in their rolle as scout/ admiral ship. Also they need to take the core offline for landing which implies that landing could damage it. As a science vessle they maybe sometimes stay on a planets surface to conduct experiments to the last minute and then start and make an escape. If the core is damaged in a situation like this and the star is becoming an supernova you would probably be happy to have a spare core to just plug in and escape with warp speed. All other ships which are not designed for landing and situations like this don't carry a secondary core. But probably can build a provisionally one within a few weeks in space so they can attain at least low warp speeds to reach the nearest starbase.

A pre Nemesis refit (post Insurrection?) would be a industrial replicatior capable of making ground vehicles, so it could explain that the Argos Rover wasn't a piece of crap that took up space [so Patrick Stewart could drive one] but was a on the spot design to blend in with a post apocalyptic higher tech Mad Max world with dune buggies armed with plasma cannons. The ship is actually equipped with a few hundred photon torpedos. Question is: how many did they use during the battle (they were eating through those like mints) and when was the last time the ship was resupplied. And about the senior Bridge crew going on the away mission: sending Worf and Data was a good choice. Starfighters make sense. You can never have too much firepower. And since shields are the essential defense(and the only thing that keeps the enemy from cutting right through your hull like a warm knife through butter), you can never have too much power for keeping your shields up. Once down, it doesn't matter where you are inside your ship, on the very top of the saucer or at the very core, you're toast.

@@iantolyczak8411 No, rear launchers are useful for firing at targets while fleeing.... not to mention, While photon torpedoes are warp-capable, to the extent that you are able to fire them at a target while both targets are at warp, attempting to fire on a target that is behind you, from a forward-mounted launcher, at warp, would not end well. Additionally, a broadside configuration would add a huge vulnerability, as it would add multiple highly explosive compartments along center-line of either your primary, or secondary hull (or entire hull, for ships lacking distinct primary and secondary hulls), allowing, in the event of shield failure, the enemy to essentially bisect that hull, or outright destroy the entire ship, with far greater ease, when compared to the smaller targets that torpedo bays/launchers occupy on known designs.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Enterprise E. It's by FAR my Favorite version and to me it's PERFECT in it's aesthetics, size, power, function, power, speed and everything else! From the SECOND i saw it in First Contact I was instantly in love with it's menacing sleek lines, colors and everything. It just looks SOO BAD ASS with so much going on. It's a MASTERPIECE and the Designer REALLY hit it out of the park IMO. It would have been AWESOME if the E Got pulled into the Delta Quadrant instead of Voyager. Almost no one would have been able to touch the E except possibly the Borg and a few other races that had some serious tech and bigger ships. But even then with the incredible updated Firepower of the E, I'm sure they would have still prevailed and with it's speed and being able to Hold much higher warp speed for far longer than Voyager, they would have made it home considerably faster than Voyager could have.
@OrbitalGirl4 жыл бұрын

I'm thinking the Sovereign class may have been a ship in the first design stages during "The Best of Both Worlds." They did mention that a lot of new systems were being designed, but were months away. And, obviously, it would take even longer to design the rest of the ship once the tactical systems were finalized. Six years doesn't sound unreasonable, *if* we accept the notion that it took almost 20 years for Starfleet to take the Galaxy class from the drawing board to the launching of the U.S.S. Galaxy itself. It might even be *too* quick.

A couple of comments: Saucer separation was shown in the of the Next Gen. movies and I remember a book I had back in the 60s (yeah, TOS was still on air at the time) that stated the ship had this capability and they would like to show it in Season 4! The arboretum (that's the correct spelling) was another thing mentioned in the book as something that existed on NCC-1701 and I believe it was shown in one of the original crew movies. Thanks for this, though, and the seat belt were a long time coming, when the crew was being thrown from their chairs during a battle scene I always wondered why they didn't have seat belts.

Enterprise-D neck wider and... shorter? Wider yes, but shorter? Nah. Not even proportionally. The real reason the E and Voyager had no neck: ILM hated lighting the Enterprise-D. No matter what the angle, there was always a shadow. So producers, designers and ILM decided on "neckless" ships. Right around the time when cgi became good and affordable.
@76TomD5 жыл бұрын
..and the D was destroyed as it was designed for TV 4:3 aspect ration and not 16:9 cinematic filming (as well as the Generations story needed a big action sequence even though the ship survived a Borg attack but not a 20 yr old BOP). Everyone that worked on the model(s) of the D stated how much of a pain they were to work with. The last effects studio to work with the D actually had the registry changed to NCC-1701-E before placing her in storage as there was still uncertainty if the second TNG movie would still make use of the model.

@DrRussian5 жыл бұрын
I view the nacelles as a sort of necessary risk. You want them for warp capability but they can be hazardous to the ship itself, so they where placed away from the main hull. Much like a nuclear reactor on a ship, you put it as far away from anything vital as possible, while still protecting it to the best you can. This way if its damaged, you dont lose a quarter of the ship because of it
@sylvaindrasse42615 жыл бұрын
If you go back to the book "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise", relating to Enterprise-A (official canon), you will learn that the nacelle pylons placement and geometry are a function of warp field geometry, dictated by the size of the ship and the power of the warp field necessary to move the ship safely at warp speeds. Which explains the size and location of the nacelles on runabouts like the Orinoco (Deep Space 9) and the shuttlecraft of the original series. So, as much as it is indeed a vulnerability, you need the nacelles where they are, or you can't have warp travel,.
