To be fair, that bridge is small and would present a targeting challenge. Torpedoes are renowned for being highly inaccurate. A torpedo salvo of half a dozen would most likely hit everything on the upper decks other than the bridge even when the bridge is targeted. I do agree it needs to be better armoured, though.

@@adamtobroxen3709 Torpedoes do have a guidance system. So in theory, torpedoes should be more accurate than phasers, but the reality is it is not. Phasers and disruptors can hit the target with low precision but a torpedo could miss the ship entirely. I suppose it's a balancing aspect since torpedoes deal a lot more damage than phasers. So if they're made to be accurate, then there would be little reason to put phasers on a ship.

@vysearcadia522
@vysearcadia522 4 жыл бұрын
@@queenbiscuit311 Nah actually if you think about it, it's more of a safety feature. You got two things to worry about.... Nacelles inside the Defiant means one true explosion and they are done for. The whole ship is destroyed, crew and all, though protected for longer than on normal starfleet ships. Also as TheAmateurAsian said, this probably limits the warp field on the Defiant but the Defiant is also smaller so it's design could make sense. The Nacelles outside the main ship means two things: Larger warp field and Proximity Safety Precautions. You need a large warp field for larger ships and these nacelles are gonna need to be huge. This is clearly unsafe to be in proximity of. If just one of them blows on the inside of a "large defiant", everyone is vaporized. And if you want to get real critical, a starships with a broken nacelle (being on the outside of the ships) are easier to repair and replace. And let's not forget that the nacelles and even the neck of the starships like the TOS Consitution series are actually quite HUGE. More than 10x maybe 100x larger than our current battleships in the seas. So to say these areas are not well-armored is baffling as is.

As far as saucer separation goes, the Original Constitution class could do it. It was never shown on-screen but does get described in the Original Tech Manual put together by TOS designer Franz Joseph (1975). Lastly thank you very much for this. Here's one you missed: It's warp core was one of two new types (along with the Intrepid class's variable geometry nacelles) that didn't _damage subspace in regions that were susceptible._ Starfleet were trialing both concepts, the Sovereign's one was considered better, lack of external moving parts probably helped. And that made retrofitting to older ships a possiblity. This enabled the ship to travel at warp in unstable regions where subspace is vunerable to damage - Note warp does *not damage regular subspace,* if it did then after millions of years of warp capable civilisations there would be no subspace. It was to allow travel in the Hekaras corridor and similar regions (with tetryon radiation) without triggering any effects, a strategically useful ability, especially if encountering similar instabilities during exploration where no rescue ship would know to look if you got in trouble. Or just taking a shortcut or fighting ships in that corridor, especially preventing standard warp drive ships from doing further damage in that area.

It's the _Enterprise_ , and the crew that routinely had warp core breaches or had to eject cores on the reg. Of course they stocked spares.
@TheCyberloki
@TheCyberloki 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think they used Whole Spareparts but could build a provisionally warpcore out of replicated material. The reason for the Intrepid to carry an already assembled one is so they could plug it in and retain warp speeds in hours or even minutes which played in their rolle as scout/ admiral ship. Also they need to take the core offline for landing which implies that landing could damage it. As a science vessle they maybe sometimes stay on a planets surface to conduct experiments to the last minute and then start and make an escape. If the core is damaged in a situation like this and the star is becoming an supernova you would probably be happy to have a spare core to just plug in and escape with warp speed. All other ships which are not designed for landing and situations like this don't carry a secondary core. But probably can build a provisionally one within a few weeks in space so they can attain at least low warp speeds to reach the nearest starbase.

125,000 terajoules is a pretty significant punch. That comes out to the rough energy equivalent of a thirty-megaton thermonuclear bomb. In-universe, the photon torpedoes used in TNG had only about twice as much punch as these new guns do, and the torpedoes were considered that ship's most formidable weapon. That's from a non-canon source. The same source also indicates that a photon torpedo should be capable of 2.39 gigatons (p 141) and given that the forward on page vii says that there's an active Starfleet disinformation program, any one or both or none of those numbers are correct. What we do know is that 250 meter asteroids can be vaporized (100 megatons) and even larger ones of tens of kilometers reduced to tiny debris as well as partially vaporized using most of the Enterprise-D's torpedoes indicates hundreds of megatons or single digit gigatons.

With advanced weapons like phasers it doesn't matter where on an unshielded ship you are if they target you they will hit you. With that in mind the bridge is also not the main target an enemy would try to hit the Warpcore is a much more critical target which destroys the whole ship if hit. But the fighter wing is also cool. I find it interesting that they have a hydroponics lab on a heavily armed ship. Perhaps all ships have them now to increase crew moral and productivity. I never quite understood having the Bridge exposed non the top. The Defiant was smart with the Bridge buried deeper within. If the bridge was buried deeper on the E then all those "red shirts" might not have died! And there would be no need for seat belts. Besides, seatbelts can hinder mobility which can be critical to survival.

Still doesn't have _circuit breakers_ or _surge protectors_ in the consoles. And they continue to use _rocks_ for insulation. BTW The arboretum would be a great location to *install the bridge internally.* They just use viewscreens anyway. Swap them around in the post Nemesis refit. And seriously, carry more torpedoes, running out mid battle is just embarrassing. A couple of hundred at least, it wouldn't strain the internal storage of a ship that large. A pre Nemesis refit (post Insurrection?) would be a industrial replicatior capable of making ground vehicles, so it could explain that the Argos Rover wasn't a piece of crap that took up space [so Patrick Stewart could drive one] but was a on the spot design to blend in with a post apocalyptic higher tech Mad Max world with dune buggies armed with plasma cannons. Thus it was an bespoke classic car with a historical gun stuck on at Worfs insistence - and did they have _no crewmembers_ that could do the retrieval mission without requiring senior bridge crew…?
@Jaeih
@Jaeih 5 жыл бұрын
The ship is actually equipped with a few hundred photon torpedos. Question is: how many did they use during the battle (they were eating through those like mints) and when was the last time the ship was resupplied. They hurried into Romulan space and didn't think they would be caught in a scheme to destroy earth. And about the senior Bridge crew going on the away mission: sending Worf and Data was a good choice. It was a hostile environment, so Worf as the chief tactical and security officer being there was justified and Data was looking for that positronic signal usually emitted by androids. Well... And Picard just wanted to drive the Argo.

Starfighters make sense. You can never have too much firepower. And since shields are the essential defense(and the only thing that keeps the enemy from cutting right through your hull like a warm knife through butter), you can never have too much power for keeping your shields up. @@iantolyczak8411 No, rear launchers are useful for firing at targets while fleeing.... not to mention, While photon torpedoes are warp-capable, to the extent that you are able to fire them at a target while both targets are at warp, attempting to fire on a target that is behind you, from a forward-mounted launcher, at warp, would not end well. Additionally, a broadside configuration would add a huge vulnerability, as it would add multiple highly explosive compartments along center-line of either your primary, or secondary hull (or entire hull, for ships lacking distinct primary and secondary hulls), allowing, in the event of shield failure, the enemy to essentially bisect that hull, or outright destroy the entire ship, with far greater ease, when compared to the smaller targets that torpedo bays/launchers occupy on known designs.

From the SECOND i saw it in First Contact I was instantly in love with it's menacing sleek lines, colors and everything. It just looks SOO BAD ASS with so much going on. It's a MASTERPIECE and the Designer REALLY hit it out of the park IMO. It would have been AWESOME if the E Got pulled into the Delta Quadrant instead of Voyager. Almost no one would have been able to touch the E except possibly the Borg and a few other races that had some serious tech and bigger ships. But even then with the incredible updated Firepower of the E, I'm sure they would have still prevailed and with it's speed and being able to Hold much higher warp speed for far longer than Voyager, they would have made it home considerably faster than Voyager could have.

Six years doesn't sound unreasonable, *if* we accept the notion that it took almost 20 years for Starfleet to take the Galaxy class from the drawing board to the launching of the U.S.S. I view the nacelles as a sort of necessary risk. You want them for warp capability but they can be hazardous to the ship itself, so they where placed away from the main hull. Much like a nuclear reactor on a ship, you put it as far away from anything vital as possible, while still protecting it to the best you can. This way if its damaged, you dont lose a quarter of the ship because of it
@sylvaindrasse4261
@sylvaindrasse4261 5 жыл бұрын
If you go back to the book "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise", relating to Enterprise-A (official canon), you will learn that the nacelle pylons placement and geometry are a function of warp field geometry, dictated by the size of the ship and the power of the warp field necessary to move the ship safely at warp speeds. Which explains the size and location of the nacelles on runabouts like the Orinoco (Deep Space 9) and the shuttlecraft of the original series. So, as much as it is indeed a vulnerability, you need the nacelles where they are, or you can't have warp travel,.

Performers on ship often doubled as tutors for children onboard or were amateur crewmen. Anthropology staff were also disproportionately represented in the first Enterprise orchestra. (It had three). It does have a crew of over a thousand people.

@@AnonEyeMouse and also given how accelerated learning is represented across many series and episodes, instrument studies would probably be a more prevalent hobby than it is today.

Just wanted to add that background men wearing skirts was on purpose to show that gender conventions stopped existing in the 24th Century

Actually, it was the producer's way of acknowledging (and at the same time lightly mocking) the criticism leveled at the show by female fans concerning the differences in gender-specific regulation Starfleet uniforms.

Or maybe he's just proud of his Scottish heritage. Scotty wore a kilt at least once, as well.

Enterprise E, sucks, and thank God it's only in 3 mediocre or worse movies! In DS9 end of Dominion war, we saw none, but Galaxy class was the at the first line and we never seen any even damaged. I hate the double E!

There were belts present in the NX-2000 Excelsior, needed to be closed before activating 'transwarp'. Maybe they've removed them to get rid of the memory of that technological disaster.

Something to consider with saucer separation, the USS Kelvin's warp nacelle was able to be used at sublight. You see this as she's on a collision course with the Narada. So it's possible that the drive section could travel at sublight speeds, they could simply water down the power output.

Getting salty with fans of the show, Ben? Did you learn nothing from Disney and Lucasfilm's complaining about the fans comments? ;)

I like this Enterprise as she is the most powerful Starship ever built and launched by Starfleet like the fact we see the use of escape pods the ejection of the warp core and the use of the Captain's Yacht that we never got to see in TNG even though we saw warp core ejections seen on Voyager and escape pod launching on DS9.
