Being a huge Star Trek fan, I thank you for this wonderful video dedicated to the original starship Enterprise, and I want to thank the legendary Andrew Probert for designing the Enterprise movie version, the Enterprise D, and his other famous works that include Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series, Airwolf, Streethawk, Batteries Not Included, SpaceCamp, Mask, Tron and The Philadelphia Experiment, as well as sharing his time with us here on KZbin. In addition, I would also like to thank the great Matt Jefferies for designing the original Enterprise. I admire the fact that he had taken the time to create a spacecraft that was both unique and revolutionary for it's time. He took the time, energy, and imagination to design a starship that attempted to feature some practical and functional applications such as placing the warp nacelles far away from the rest of the habitable sections of the ship to prevent radiation fallout. That was good thinking on his part and within the established Star Trek Universe, it works and makes sense. Having said that, I recalled a guy who goes by the name of BTE Dan in which he created a website of his own, entitled, "Build The Enterprise", launched in May 2012 as a real possibility. It gained widespread recognition after the story was covered by the major news corporations NBCNews, Huffington Post, and Mail Online. On December 22, 2012, BTE Dan created a petition on the White House's We the People website. The petition stated that NASA should do a feasibility study of the project. A petition on the website requires 25,000 signatures in 30 days to merit the attention of the White House. However, the petition only received 7,200 signatures. He cites himself as a systems engineer and electrical engineer who has worked at a Fortune 500 company for the past 30 years. The ship would be able to carry the personnel, supplies and equipment needed for a long journey or colonization of another planet. The Gen1 Enterprise is slated to cost $706 billion USD. This doesn't include costs to launch the needed parts into space, however. The total cost for the project is estimated at $983 billion USD. It is proposed that NASA will create a program to build the spacecraft. The ship will take about 20 years to build, and Congress will allocate 0.27% of the United States' Gross Domestic Product each year to the program. For more information about the Build The Enterprise website, click here: www.buildtheenterprise.org Although the Enterprise is a cool starship design for the fictional world of Star Trek, it is poor design for a real-life spacecraft. In fact, there are many reasons why the Enterprise is an unrealistic design. For instance, it is unbalanced, ungainly, and front-heavy, specifically, it’s center of gravity axis is off-balanced, the ship would roll forward even in space. To better illustrate this point, take any fat, thick book and set it standing vertically on a table. Pretend that this book represents a spaceship. Take your index finger and touch the center of the spine, this represents the center of gravity axis. Next, give it a gentle but firm push forward with your finger. What happened? The book moved in an even direction. Now, repeat the process, only this time, place your index finger on the top section of the spine. What happened? That’s right, it tipped over. The same would happen to the Enterprise. In addition, it lacks heat radiators and the neck section and those warp pylons are so thin and fragile, they would snap off like twigs when traveling at maximum acceleration, structural integrity field or no. And if that wasn’t enough, the decks were stacked horizontally instead of vertically. Keep in mind that Matt Jefferies was an aviation and mechanical artist and knew about the principles of air flight, but he was not an aero engineer, thus, space flight is a whole different environment. If anything, the most realistic science fiction spaceships are the Discovery from 2001 and the Leonov from 2010. Unlike the Enterprise, the Discovery and Leonov were designed by real-life aero engineers. Their design obeyed the basic engineering principles such as portionality, evenly balanced, and the Leonov, in particular, had heat radiators. An interesting thing to note is that in the 2001: A Space Odyssey novel, the Discovery had heat radiators and the movie version initially also had heat radiators, but director Stanley Kubrick decided to do away with them because he thought that the general audiences would confuse them for wings, much to the consternation of author Arthur C. Clarke. Hence, the Discovery and Leonov are way more realistic than the Enterprise and they can be build right now, providing if money was not an issue. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the following comment made by a NASA engineer named Jim after Dan posted his proposal about building a real-life Enterprise starship like the one depicted in Star Trek, followed by the link: "It can't, period. It can't meet the requirements you impose on it. The structure and design is totally wrong for the task. it is unbalanced it has no room for propellant. it has no radiators The propulsion system can not meeting the 90 day to Mars requirementl The 'magnetically suspended gravity wheel' which I take to mean a centrifuge, is in the wrong plane for control of the vehicle." forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=28821.0 My point is, it is dangerous to assume that a fictional starship like the Enterprise could function in real life for all the reasons stated above. With all due respect to Dan, I very much doubt his credentials, especially since he is unwilling to reveal his last name. Nevertheless, I applaud him for thinking big and having a vision, but he respectfully went about it the wrong way. If you set out to design a fictional starship for your own sci-fi universe, that's fine because you don't necessarily have to obey the laws of physics and you can go as wild, crazy, and creative as you want, and there's nothing wrong with that, so long as you establish the rules and laws of your own sci-fi universe and remain consistent about them. And lastly, I don't want to create the impression that I've popped anybody's balloon, so I have to end this on a positive note. There is a way to design a starship Enterprise in a realistic manner that both adheres to the laws of physics and looks cool at the same time. NASA recently created their own realistic version of the starship Enterprise entitled the “IXS Enterprise” starship. Instead of warp nacelles, it has a warp ring that is based on the Alcubierre Warp Drive Concept. Personally, I find this design a much cooler and realistic incarnation of the starship Enterprise. I saw the refit Enterprise for the first time when my father took me to see ST TMP. Over the decades, and having seen all later Trek ships, Star Wars ships, and other sci-fi productions, the movie Enterprise keeps getting more beautiful. It's not only interesting in concept, but the execution of the studio model is about as close to dead on perfect as you can get. The only sci-fi model that come close to the refit Enterprise in the Klingon battle cruise featured in the very same movie. The execution of that model was not quite to par with the big E, but beautiful, all the same. One note about the refit: The technology was rethought in the decade between productions. Matt Jeffries probably thought of the warp engine nacelles in the same way aircraft engine nacelles before the original series went into production. The idea of running pipes of glowing plasma from the power plant to the warp coils, like steam from a boiler to the screws came later. This makes the original model problematic. As it was, calling the movie Enterprise a "refit" was a plot device to smooth everything over. When people start to dig deeper on the subject, I just roll my eyes. If anybody wants to do some interesting reverse engineering of the Enterprise, consider that the Enterprise is just a modified flying saucer. The warp powered section could have been made many years after the primary hull. Then again, the whole ship could be shaped the way it is, because it was actually built on Earth. The saucer had to be designed to be driven into space, while the other section would sit neatly into cylindrical boosters.

In Star Trek III, Admiral Morrow says 'Jim, the Enterprise is 20 years old . . we feel her day is over,' so nobody really had any idea how old the ship should be. 40 years, as indicated by some of the other characters, makes a lot more sense.

Yeah, I had thought about that years ago...the writers only took into account her 5 year mission plus the 15 years since TOS, and forgot about the Enterprise's previous captains, especially when Spock talked about serving under Captain Pike 10 or 15 years earlier in TOS.

Actually Robert Hooks' line was supposed to be "...she's OVER 20 years old." The Original Constitution-class was only supposed to serve 10-15 years at most. Even after her refit the Enterprise served well past her expected retirement date. A testament to her design and Starfleet Engineers. The line was meant to convey that, though she still may be flyable (though barely after Khan's attack), her life in fleet service was supposed to be over long ago and that Starfleet was pushing past the Constitution-class. Why the line was changed, or if Hooks misspoke, is unknown.

I actually got to see that chunk of the original series bridge they made for Relics when I was a teenager. It was part of a traveling Star Trek exhibit in Niagara Falls along with a lot of other props and uniforms. It was pretty neat and was a complete surprise since we were just on a family vacation and didn't know it was going to be there. I've been waiting for your TOS Enterprise retrospective since you started doing these videos and it was worth the wait. Great job.

The bridge module from "Relics" was also used in the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations". Some of the scene of Sisco and Dax on the bridge was green screen work but when they were close up and working with the consoles, it was the module. Scotty's engineering station was redressed as the internal sensors station by changing the screen panel out.

Here's a few trek fun facts for ya. The green alcohol is a long standing running gag throughout star trek, it was originally featured in TOS In the episode by any other name when Scotty drink an alien under-the-table He grabbed this bottle and when the alien asked what it was, he Didn't know either and simply said it's green. As a gag Data described it exactly the same way to him when a much older scotty from the episode relics asked the same question. It seems odd that Scotty would not recall drinking this beverage before, however it might be plausible that he couldn't remember because he was absolutely hammered at the time lol. It wasn't until captain Picard found him with it on the holodeck version of the original enterprise bridge that it was finally identified as Aldebaran Whiskey. In DS9 Quark caught Rom pilfering Aldebaran whiskey from his stockroom When he found empty bottles of it in Roms quarters. And ENT made a nod to it as well from Mirror universe episode in a mirror darkly part one, When evil Captain Archer found a bottle in Kirk's quarters And had some with evil slutty Hoshi Sato lol.

Now April said he became a Captain in 2229 but maybe Enterprise wasn't his first ship perhaps after the Kelvin incident in 2233 Starfleet rushed some starships into production and service which were still on the drawing board and April could had been given command of this Enterprise and it could had been the original Prime Enterprise which was eventually replaced in the 2250's.

Actually the enterprise that was in the flashback in countdown is the original enterprise. When neros ship was rammed by the kelvin the escaping shuttles took some debris with them and star fleet decided to use the 25th century tech with their tech and it was decided that the whole fleet was scraped for more advanced ships, so the enterprise in 09 was an entirely different ship

Is that canon? I really hope it is - that makes perfect sense. Also, in the 2009 Star Trek, was it ever specifically shown that the ship under construction on Earth is in fact NCC-1701? It could be another Constitution-class. Edit: Just re-watched that scene. Yeah, it's only on screen for a few frames, but "NCC-1701" is clearly visible as the camera pans by just as the shuttle to Starfleet Academy leaves. Also, "three years later," when Pike is giving the pep talk before heading to Vulcan, he specifically says "maiden voyage."

to me, on the nacelles is the number 1201, and multiple ships have shared a name but not a registry number before.

The original Constitution class was supposed to be part of the Kelvin timeline, and as explained before by Star Excelsior, it was supposed to be scrapped with most of the fleet after the battle with Nero's ship given that the tech was hopelessly outmatched. That design was even supposed to make a cameo on Into Darkness, with a model of the original Constitution class hanging from the ceiling of Admiral Markus' office, but the scene was cut from the final movie. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ-5iIiZmph5frM

Something that a lot of people don't consider about the Kelvin Universe is that there was a great deal more things its creation changed. The "Prime" Universe is a patchwork of various alternate timelines and trans-universal incursions, a number caused the Kirk and his crew. This would have immediate ramifications with regards to encountering the Mirror Universe, meaning that it as well would have a Kelvin-style variant, one where Mirror Spock doesn't become Emperor. But there are other issues. Any time travel instances in the "Prime" universe that affected any time before when Nero created the Kelvin universe simply never happened, or happen in a different way. But speaking of Robert April, let's remember that the Kelvin universe version of Kirk is at least 21(or whatever the legal drinking age) when he decides to take Pike's challenge, the new Enterprise being built at the time. This means that a different Enterprise could have been under construction when Nero arrived. We know that Robert April was only in command of the Enterprise for a short time, so he could still have commanded that one. However, it's likely this Enterprise was lost. Rather than deal with the PR nightmare, they likely hid the details and reserved the registry for another attempt down the road, pretending the lost ship wasn't an Enterprise to begin with. Heck, Starfleet buried that lice killed most of the crew of a ship Mariner served on. Losing a brand new ship would come with a lot of egg on their faces.
