A great video. I've just watched the TV series of Nimitz' deployment in 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed it - it reminded me of my own Navy days (in a much smaller navy and on much smaller ships but I saw USN ships up close and visited many of its bases).

The Nimitz first went to Bremerton in 1987, from Norfolk when the Roosevelt came out. Navy said there where too many carriers on the east coast and sent the Nimitz to the Med then to the west coast. I was on cat 2 then.

My brother was a member of her first crew in 1975. He was on her during her shakedown cruise. We took him to Norfolk to board her. I was amazed at the size of her. (Particularly how high her flight deck was above the water.) I didnt measure it, but I was told its 60 feet from flight deck to waterline.

The implication that the US Navy are the only Navy to “man the rails” is not true, I know it wasn’t said but the way it came across was that it was only a US Navy tradition, I think you will find that the Royal Navy introduced this, and many other traditions to Navy’s around the world. I Was really looking forward to this video, but the audio is so intermittent that it has spoiled it so I will have to try something else, sorry. One last thing, was/is the USS Nimitz the largest roll on roll of car ferry in the world, and probably the most expensive.

I've been to the UK as well as Germany who have some of the socialist programs you praise. Their doctors are simply not on par with the skills of those in the US. If you've ever been a service member and needed emergency treatment, you'd know the US insists on the absolute best care providers of that country because frankly the best are decent and the rest suck. BTW the sales tax in Germany is over 20%. A Honda Accord is a luxury car over there. Forcing some people to pay for other's health care and education isn't exactly looking out for everyone. If you want to go to college, go and pay for it yourself. Not my problem. And final thought, the "big fucking war machine" lets all the cry baby college kids go to school without having to worry about having their heads cut off by radical extremists. It also produces 400K gallons of fresh water a day to help natural disaster victims where clean water is usually the difference between life and death. Food for thought.

Peter R it's because she changed homeports. The people who had no choice but to ride the ship, essential personnel needed to make the trip, could have there personal vehicles at the next command. The navy would've had to pay to move the vehicles regardless.
