You have to think about the target audience and what the imagery is supposed to accomplish. This for kids K - 12, and their parents. Kids have a basic understanding of locomotion and beams from the nacelles show them that the objects are what makes it go forward. Additionally, most of those intro shots are there to give a sense of speed and direction. Earlier treks were forced to have a planet backdrop or a moving starfield to convey motion, however the shots were tight and lacked the scale of space. You're more than likely correct on the protostar being the experimental engine. That's an easy concept for a kid to grasp "the engine is powered by a mini star" - with the gimmick of the ship changing modes being a key visualizer. Gotta remember, when we were kids we might have been intrigued by the technobabble and the strange concepts - but for other kids they switched the channel to something else. This is a good opportunity to get a new generation on board with a great series.

I would love my head cannon idea that this ship was built to create "subspace highways" where other warp capable ships can travel along the same route later with greater efficiency maybe even undoing some of the subspace damage of previous generations, but it would either only be able to do this in short bursts/slower/have to be massively stripped down to preform this one function. So this would be a trailblazing ship opening up new paths into the future etc etc theming.

Evening Captains, love the design of the ship... it’s obviously an NX (experimental). The deflector “dish” is something new and a little puzzling, but if the third “nacelle” is a trans warp booster maybe or whatever it is, then a new much more robust deflector would be needed. I did think perhaps it was creating not exactly a wormhole (along the lines that Atlantis used in the final episode of Stargate Atlantis), but perhaps something more like a quantum tunneling drive? Maybe it’s driving the ship even further into sub space, maybe sub-sub space, just a shade above wormhole equivalent. So it’s not nearing instantaneous travel, but since it’s “deeper” into sub space, creating a tunneling effect, you get the post warp speed boost but pre wormhole? Just a thought
@grantalbrecht45773 жыл бұрын
Definitely love the idea of a wormhole drive. As Keiko said in her school. “Most wormholes are naturally occurring or the result of dangerous warp drive malfunctions. Such wormholes tend to oscillate wildly across time and space, making them useless for normal interstellar commerce”. A la the Motion Picture, controlling that effect seems like a natural area of research and experimentation. And the deflector being the god system that can do just about anything is over done in Trek, would make way more sense to be creating a wormhole from the nacelles, since it is already literally their job to bend and warp space.

farscape found a way to balance a super fast FTL drive against enemies with standard FTL. a starburst(leviathan FTL drive) is considerably faster than conventional FTL(i think along the lines of a quick jump travelling the equivalent of 10 hours of FTL), but you can easily be a few lightyears off your target and you need a lot of cooldown time. this also creates an interesting cat and mouse game where the crew of such a ship would have some mandatory time to explore between jumps, and in the meantime give the enemy chasing them a chance to catch up. so you'd constantly have pressure for the crew to collect resources and do maintenance between jumps, and be ready to jump again when the enemy arrives. although this specific mechanic probably won't be used here, as having conventional FTL(warp) alongside a jump drive would eliminate the concerns with a cooldown.

Fast-forward 6 months after the season wraps up: the protostar drive is pretty much that experimental unique drive system cmdr Foley supposed it was. The ship is small, but loaded with features. This show ended up being the kind of trek that weve been missing. The showrunners actually get star trek and are introducing a new young audience to the spirit of the franchise in interesting ways. The alien kids thing is... well... different... but I think that's a great vehicle for explaining the trek universe, concepts, and what starfleet and the federation are to a new audience. My two cents - adjusted for inflation. o7

The nacelles movig up and down of the Voyager was an early defence against ripping holes in space-time so perhaps if this ship is that much faster it could rip a larger one due to its setup. So how about its design being that reason perhaps? I know they fixed that by the time of the Ent E so perhaps the energy output of this could be that much greater it still needs to move the nacelles to use the middle engine?

Is this prime universe ship or ship from J.J. Abrams movies?
@Nimariel3 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it’s a new propulsion system, possibly spun off from slipstream, or a visual reboot of slipstream, just as they reboot what warp and transporting look like all the time. I’m also guessing that the ship was built using tech that Voyager brought back and was launched as an experiment to revisit some of the worlds that Voyager had noted, hence the Janeway holo as a way to show a familiar face. Something obviously went wrong and the ship crashed. Maybe there was no crew, or maybe some of the crew were enslaved, explaining why a Tellarite is in the Delta Quadrant. Sometimes I think that new propulsion systems are a Starfleet obsession. Every 20-50 years they come up with some new type of test bed design, usually just a prototype. It sort of works, but not well enough, and the whole thing gets shelved until someone comes up with a new design a generation later. We’ve had the Crossfield, the Excelsior, a long-distance transporter, a displacement wave, the Kosinski experiments, the Cochrane shuttle, slipstream, etc. I prefer no light streams at warp, but I could also totally see them being an artistic choice for an animated series.

When a ship is lost and has no crew does the Janeway holo pop up to conscript random paserbys into Fed service?

My idea would that this is a prototype scout ship, design to go quickly to the delta quadrant, nose around and then head back home. It has a janeway training hologram because Starfleet needed experts in the delta quadrant but couldn't expect voyager crew to start giving lectures every week to train up other parts of starfleet . Plus there a lot of stuff Starfleet might want to keep secret or on a need to know basis, Omega Molecule. This could all be handle by the Janeway training hologram.

The new ship is looking amazing. It has a very slipstream feel about it. Anyone else get this vibe? I have a suspicion that its based off the slipstream system that plowed Voyager into that iceplanet. I mean the system worked to some degree... The third "nacel" could be a slipstream training wheel to help stabilize the slipstream effect like Voyager was unable to. It would also play into the rules of design as its not there to generate a warp field (which requires pairs) more add support during the slipstream effect. I mean that is if its slipstream at all. If the third is merely training wheels it could apply to transwarp as well. Again its not regular warp hence the pairing wouldn't matter. Having the Janeway hologram suggests alot. She has experience with a few areas and techs that would solidify why she was used. I can't imagine they would throw new tech purposely towards the delta quad as they wouldn't want the chance of the Borg remnants picking it up. But she has expertise with the Borg, Slipstream and Transwarp so any of those things could easily be explained.
