The old "sugar boats" didn't even have air conditioning. In the tropics, they became humid ovens. Water dripped from everywhere and the cork insulation was infested with insects. The only upside was that they could dive quickly and they were generally equipped with the old Mark X torpedoes, which were actually more reliable than the notorious Mark XIVs. That's how S-44 was able to sink a heavy cruiser at the Battle of Savo Island, mitigating an otherwise disastrous engagement.

I think I have a few more to go...its been a 4 day adventure for me....very inspirational stuff...my dad was in the navy and we sat and watched every episode on TV. that had to be some 50+yrs ago. at first i didn t recognized the first few episodes. it was the surfacing of the sub in the opening credits that jogged my memory...got a warm fuzzy 1950s feeling watching these re enactments of those patrols. Dad took me to the Philadelphia Navy Yard once on Independence Day week end '58, '59, or '60 and we boarded one of these submarines, then retired from active duty. It was either the Swordfish or the Sawfish or maybe the Bowfin.I can't recall which, but it was one of them. I was only 7 when these aired and mainly was intrigued by the submarine. It wasn t until seeing these episodes again that I realized the comradeship and bravery the crews had. At 7 the human factor hadn t kicked in yet. That s why I say very inspirational stuff. Thanks for taking the time to put these episodes on youtube. For me it was a great trip down memory lane.....ok speech over and out.

THERE WERE SO MANY MOVIES FROM OUR EXPERIENCE AS A NATION AT WAR ON AND UNDER THE SEA. THESE MOVIES ENABLED THE ENLISTMENT OF GENERATIONS TO COME. THE DEFENSE OF OUR GREAT NATION WAS ALWAYS AT THE FOREFRONT, SIMPLY BECAUSE WE WERE IN THE RIGHT. WE WERE ALWAYS INVOLVED AT SAVING THE OPPRESSED, THE PEOPLE BEING SQUEEZED FROM THEIR RIGHTFUL OWNERSHIP OF FREEDOM AND THE EXPRESSION OF IT. I BECAME A UNION ELECTRICIAN DESPITE MY LOVE OF DRAWING CROSS SECTIONS OF SUBMARINES, BATTLESHIPS , FIGHTER PLANES AND YES THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE. COMPLETE WITH THE BRIDGE WITH CAPTAIN SEATED IN THE CENTER WITH ALL OPERATIONS OF THE STARSHIP SURROUNDING HIM MAKES PLENTY OF SENSE. ALL YOU NAUTICAL PEOPLE OUT THERE MAY NOW THINK OF WHY THE CAPTAINS CHAIR WAS ALWAYS ON THE STARBOARD SIDE OF THE BRIDGE.??? I KNOW ABOUT CIC BUT IT ALL FALLS TO THE CAPTAIN......SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FOR ME.

Thanks for the video. In 1966, I thought I was on an old boat, one of the last fleet boats still in service, the USS CARP SS338.

Back in 1963, the Carp was the designated "show boat" on a weekend in Norfolk. Crew members from the Sea Leopard, SS-483, enticed the topside watch aft with ice cream, while others 'modified' the ship's name boards on the sail to read "USS Crap". Submariners just got no respect, lol. The look on the OD's face the next morning was priceless!

Wow - Film & TV Character Actor, Radio personality Lawrence Dobkin (The Naked City, et al, here credited as Lawrence Bodkin), Mike "Touch" Conners (Mannix), and a young Bobby Driscoll (Treasure Island, South of the South and voice of Peter Pan).

i'm guessing the older s-type boats used different torpedos than the newer-design boats. did the s-boats have the same problems w/ defective torpedos early in the war ? watching another episode featuring an s-boat, i got a kick out of one of the officers wearing a very large circular slide rule on a lanyard around his neck. btw, he didn't refer to his slide rule once during the show.

AS I WATCH EVERY EPISODE IT BECOMES OBVIOUS THAT MANY SUBS WERE THE VICTIMS OF CREW AND COMMAND SNAFUS RATHER THAN BEING DESTROYED BY THE JAPANESE.

Wrong again. You have the luxury of judging the circumstances after the fact without your rearend actually serving your country.
