Great to see Sara's bridge again; Served in the navigation division 1963-64. It seems like a lifetime ago but the memories are still clear. I enjoyed getting into the wind to start flight operations, especially at night. I even enjoyed running to my battle station in secondary conn (above the rudder)...what a run from the bridge!

I am a plank owner of the Saratoga. I went aboard in 1956, as a seaman radioman, the year She was commissioned. Three shakedown cruises to Gitmo and a Med. cruise. Sleeping quarters right under the catapults. Got used to the noise after awhile. I have a certificate that indicates "Plank Owner", the first menu and a patch with the emblem of the "crowing cock". It breaks my heart She is going to be scrapped. Had some great times on board. Anchors away.

Thank you for your replies, I must say that this is the first contact I have ever had with anyone that served on US Navy ships, with or without my uncle, what matters is I am very proud of all of the people that served our country during WW 2, yet alone any other campaign, battle or war. My US Navy uncle enlisted into the Navy sometime in the 1930's and retired in 1959, the year I was born, he then did 10 years reserve. I enjoyed your video very much and will watch it again.

My uncle Ervin Westphal served his last active years aboard the mighty Sara, he was aboard when the Sara was in the Mediterranean Tour, by looking in the yearbook I have of his handed down to me,from that era his notes indicated that he was a "Demon Doctor", I remember recollections of him talking about working and servicing the aircrafts.

What a great video and thanks for posting. I was on CV-64 which is now out of service and its sad when you think about all the men and all the stories that could be told over the course of a ships life. Its kind of weird knowing when these ship are in service there is always people on board and then no one is onboard it just doesnt seem right.

Great video, just wish there was more recent footage to be found such as this. I served aboard her from '89-'90 in 1st Division. Miss shipmates from Deck & Nav Depts. What a shame the museum idea was scrapped! I would love to get aboard her again as this gentleman did.

I served on Ike in the 1980’s, V-2. If was an amazing time to be in the Navy. Regan really changed the trajectory and we had some good Admirals. Sadly, the Navy today is a shadow of what it once was. I hate to see how small and how far behind our Navy is falling relative to the wars we most likely will need to fight soon.

For a short time that helm wheel was in my house in central Oregon. I was Deck Dept. 2nd Div. for the final cruise, manned the helm on MANY a mid-watch. I wanted a piece of the ship to remember her and being a young dumb sailor I "borrowed" the helm wheel when I left her for the last time. Smuggled it off the quarterdeck at the bottom of a bag of all my gear. I went home on leave for 30 days before reporting to my next ship in San Diego. NCIS showed up at my home, asking if I knew anything about a missing helm wheel. It was hard to say no, largely because it was hanging on the wall directly behind me as I answered the door. I was NJP'd at my next command for larceny. CMC, XO and Captain all thought it was funny. Let me off with 45 days extra duty and 1/2 X 2 pay. I heard later that they wanted it in a museum, I would still like to go hold it one more time.

No, no, no, no! The ship hasn't been scrapped. CV-60 is in storage at Newport, Rhode Island. It was on a donation hold for possible preservation as a museum ships but all the bids failed due to lack of money. It's horrendously expensive to maintain museum ships let alone obtain one. CV-60 is currently rusting at dock; it's not being maintained. The ship may ultimately be scrapped but it's currently docked in Rhode Island.

fighting 4 main after sara limped into mayport surviving "SLEP" wnd 2 amr the shot of 4 sstg brings back so many memories, that thing was hell to start a hand powered oil pump throw back to 1940s there was even a evaporator , #5 i think that came from a very old battleship, it still had the brass name plate it hardly ever made good water.and the shot of the shaft alley ladder 7 decks down rough on anyone who had to go there 1mmr was always the showcase because it had the least amount of equipment and no thru shafting, 3mmr was a hell of a place was crowded hot noisey old always got a problem " nothing new in 52" was the saying, that plant in all the spaces was hard to run and rust was bad in piping

Well, I don't what's better. Swords to Shick razor blades, or sinking to the bottom of the ocean and finding out 5 years later they didn't decontam the ship well enough. There are already reports about the Oriskany releasing some of the chemicals they supposedly took out of her before she was deliberately sunk. That was a private contractor. I can't imagine the Navy did much better with the America... and remember, the PTB's just admitted they had servicemen burning toxic material in open
