He was a main driver to U.S. influence during the Second World War, supported integration of U.S. ships into the Grand Fleet (Scapa Flow ) during the First World War as the First Sea Lord. He eventually was declared a naturalized U.S. citizen after WW2. On top of that, his mother was American- born, raised, and lived in Brooklyn until she married Randolph Churchill.

In itself is a shame, I'm not sure they did research on Churchill away from the war. His human rights record was not what any of us would want to repeat. He tried to persuade President Truman to do a preemptive nuclear attack on Moscow... Luckily they ignored him... And the death toll in Africa was his doing. He was an imperialist and actively sought to create a class system within the country. He wasn't all good, he wasn't all bad.. But he far from the hero that people make him out to be. But I'm not surprised the ship is named after him as he was Anshan British mixed parents anyway

Bit of useless information: Winston S Churchill is the only US Navy boat that flies the Royal Navy White Ensign as well as the US flag at all times and by tradition always has a Royal Navy Officer as Navigating Officer. The Theodore Roosevelt has 6 Royal Navy deck hands on attachment for training in preparation for the QE Class carriers. It is bloody big though!

I was wondering why folks were waving the Welsh flag at the ship, that must have been for the RN officer onboard.

@TheCandidCanadian9 жыл бұрын
1chish The reason that the RN deck hands and Navigating Officers board American ships is because the British Empire became a smoldering ruin after WWII. When an empire suffers a near complete collapse, you need all the help you can get; hence why the Royal Navy must now, like the lapdog it is, depend on American and Canadian assets to survive and operate in the 21st century. As a Canadian by blood, I get a particularly satisfying feeling knowing that the UK is now irrelevant and will soon be in the rubbish bin of history; they've been a plague on mankind for far too long. With Asian emigration into the UK at the levels they are, old Blighty will be dead and gone in my lifetime. Hurrah!
@1chish9 жыл бұрын
TheCandidCanadian You are no more Canadian than my arse... And I really can't understand why idiots like you feel the need to jump on every Thread to peddle your ignorance of history and shout your personal abuse. Now much as I love Canada I don't think we, let alone the Royal Navy, rely on too many of their assets unless you call our renting a few thousand acres of prairie and providing a lot of employment to Canadians at BATUS 'relying' (Oh Google it I can't be arsed...) For the record: There is ONE Royal Navy Navigating Officer on a US boat and that is because of the high regard the US Navy has for my country and its wartime leader. Its that simple. The Carrier deckhands are on US ships because we need to get our lads and lasses back up to speed with handling fixed wing aircraft ON DECK!. We know all there is to know about carriers as we introduced every major carrier development since building the very first aircraft carrier in 1918! And we have certainly had more carriers than Canada... Oh wait you didn't know that? And here is a thing. We have had Royal Navy pilots with operational US Navy carriers flying F18s and F15s with the USAF in combat and have done for many years. And in return we have had many US Navy, Air Force and Marine pilots training and flying operations with us. (Their aircraft of choice? The Typhoon). Oh wait..... you haven't heard of 'interoperability'? And Asian immigration? WTF? You another Yank Muslim hater peddling the jihadi myth about the 5% of our population? Now jog off and peddle your abuse elsewhere. The people here just like a pleasant conversation ..

To the Brits who showed up to welcome our ships.. those who remember history,, many thanx. It's sad to reflect upon the many members of the British govt who don't recognize our partnership with the UK during WW2. D-Day was accomplished thru cooperation and logistics.. To be honest, as England is an island, the logistics end was our responsibility, and we met our shared goal. And here's to the merchant Marines who perished in WW2.. Their sacrifices , the many lost lives bringing needed supplies to the UK for the war effort, basic needs for the civilians and all, many gave everything. God bless the US NAVY, GOD BLESS US ALL. Allie's forever.

"And here's to the merchant Marines who perished in WW2" No doubt. Those guys had it rough at the beginning of both world wars. Both were "the happy time" for U-boat cmdrs, if memory serves, due to the lack of escorts. Their odds of survival weren't much better than the early (again, prior to sufficient escorts) WW2 bomber crews, I'll bet. Big brass ones on those fellas.
@Delogros5 жыл бұрын
It's worth noting that the Majority of Supply's, ship's and aircraft on D-Day where British around 35% of the US divisions that landed on D-day's supply where manufactured or produced in the British Empire, this is not meant to suggest the US contribution was not critical, to suggest that would be pretty nuts but you are wrong on the logistics front for D-day itself... It's also not having a go because the US had the Japanese to deal with so naturally the overwhelming amount of American naval effort was directed to the Pacific.
