I've an old Navy friend, that I've known since 1981, who currently lives in Whitney TX. He was on the recomissioning crews for both the Iowa and the Wisconsin, and was aboard the Wisconsin for the full duration of the First Gulf War. He once related to me, that when the incident with the Iraqis surrendering to the drone occurred, he was on the mess deck eating after coming off watch in the engineroom. They were showing the live feed from the drone on the ship's CCTV, and got to watch the event in real time as they surrendered to the drone. He has the distinction of being one of the few people alive today, who served on not one but two battleships, and also served on the last battleship in active service.

Great video Drach, Wisconsin public television has a 30 minute movie entitled: "The Last Battleship" It is an excellent history. One little tidbit: The Wisconsin is the longest of the Iowa class battleships by several inches because of the transplant of the bow of the Kentucky. I always thought that was very important, being from Wisconsin.👍👍👍
@cousin_x_caps73472 жыл бұрын
Not completely true actually, she’s longer than Iowa and Missouri, but still shorter than New Jersey, as New Jersey’s builders purposely made her 7 inches longer as to best Wisconsin when she was being built. Wisky’s new bow shrunk the lead down to only four inches longer.
@sarjim43816 жыл бұрын
I've seen a certificate created on board the Wisconsin at the time of the sinking of that KC-97 Stratofreighter. I think the plane floated around off the Azores for something like 10 days, but all the crew were rescued. It detailed the hunt for the plane as it took evasive action (the wind blew it faster to the south than predicted), and the heroic resistance by the aircraft (it was actually used for target practice), with a total of something like thirty 5" and a couple thousand 40mm rounds required to sink her. This lead to her being named an honorary US Navy vessel, the "USS Curtis LeMay". Some artistic scamp even made up a ship's patch showing the KC-97F with a large cigar being chomped on (LeMay was an inveterate cigar smoker) by the teeth in the mouth that replaced the cockpit windows. Given that LeMay and the Navy were locked in a battle royal at the time about which would be the service to provide nuclear deterrence (the Navy ultimately winning), I suspect neither the Air Force nor LeMay were amused.

Actually both branches provide nuclear deterrence as part of the nuclear triad. Interestingly SLBM warheads are far more expensive than air force or ICBM warheads as they are created with "supergrade" plutonium which minimizes the trace contamination of Pu 240 (The fissile isotope used in bombs is Pu 239) as the high spontaneous fission rate of Pu240 creates more background radiation. Not a big deal for ICCBMs in silos of air force weapons, but a very big deal for submarine crews who have to live in close proximity to 200 or so warheads.

Shortly after that, there was an unbelievably massive explosion and the group of Iraqi’s that had been directly under the drone simply ceased to exist. Apparently their comrades couldn’t even find enough remains to fill a wheelbarrow. They were in complete shock. Then, the drone returned and hovered over another group of Iraq’s. They immediately threw down their arms and surrendered. They surrendered to the drone, but they were really surrendering to an stoppable, unseen force that could literal vaporize them at will. As far as the surrendering Iraqi’s were concerned, it may as well have been the finger of God!

I have a nit to pick regarding the USN response to the Yamato. I believe a battleship response was launched by 5th Fleet but Task Force 58, acting on its own, launched the air strikes that, of course, reached Yamato first. Also, the 3rd Fleet/5th Fleet swaps were one of the most clever ideas the USN (Nimitz or Spruance, I would imagine) came up with during the Pacific War. At all times one commander and command staff was with the fleet while the other was resting and preparing for future operations. This, along with underway replenishment, was how the USN was able to maintain the pace of naval operations that kept the IJN at a disadvantage. The swaps also allowed Spruance to serve both as a (freakishly successful) fleet commander AND a part time Chief of Staff to Nimitz.
@jarmokankaanpaa65284 жыл бұрын
Might as well mention that the Pacific battle fleet was known as the Fifth Fleet while under Spruance and the Third Fleet while under Halsey. Likewise, when the carrier task force was known as TF 58 it was commanded by Marc Mitscher and when it was TF 38 it was commanded by John S. McCain, Sr..

I remember the day when our weather decks were secured, and our crew was warned that to go outside was potentially life threatening!! Why?? The convoy of Marines, Humvees with .50s loaded, and trucks etc, explained it. They were there to offload the nuclear tipped Tomahawks!! Of course theres never been an official confirmation of ships carrying them, but I can state that the Wisconsin certainly did!! A daredevil shipmate and I snuck out on the superstructure, crawling to the edge to see what the fuss was. Probably 75 or so Marines with "shoot first" orders covering the pier, weapons at the ready and trained outward was quite impressive!!
