when people are pushed to the wall, they end up being stronger. what Serena has achieved is unbelievable. Venus has been good for a bit and out of sorts because she is technically too flawed. on great days , she may be able to beat everyone but Serena. because Serena can hit the ball with much more precision and pound the lines consistently and not look like a fluke came in . a lot of Venus shots do look a bit flukey, just like how steffis used to appear at times.

I want to be so happy for Venus but all I can be is devastated for her after these shameful commentator's comments. It was touching to know that Venus would rather lose than see Serena lose (except when they're playing each other, I presume). Wonderful big sister. And yeah, that one gal got a straw up her ass for Venus. Very bad form. Venus' confidence level "borders on bombasity". Ooooh, fuck. Thing is, the word is "bombastic".

Venus had me at hello at the age of 16 with beads flying. She was a breath of fresh air that tennis desperately needed. Arthur Ashe would have been so proud. Unfortunately the tennis establishment were not smart enough to comprehend how great Venus was for the game. They simply saw her and Serena as a major threat to take away they're tour. Instead Venus and Serena raised the game to a whole new level.

I think what helped Venus and Serena at this time was that they had each other, and they had their mother, who kept them laughing, and their father, who gave them their self-belief. Venus's protective love for Serena was was/is so strong, that she would win this match as payback for Serena's losing to Davenport. She won it for Serena as much as for herself. Another good example is what Venus did to Vinci in Wuhan after Vinci beat Serena at the US Open SF in 2015.

@Jasmin Hamid Venus & Serena never said anything bad about other players. They were taught by their parents to be confident about their tennis abilities which some took as being cocky. They were 2 black young ladies participating in a sport that had very few people of color. What some look at as bad behavior towards other players was them believing in themselves that they were just as good as other players. If you're not black, you may not understand what I mean. They also weren't treated nicely by a few players on the tour. They overcame alot of adversity to achieve their goals and became the amazing players and human beings that they are. And yes they were bullied and one player even physically bumped into Venus on purpose during a change over. Venus handled it like a lady. She has more class than some because I don't think I would've handled it as nicely as she did. And if they said bad things about other players, can you please show me where you read that...thanks

@Jasmin Hamid Honey has been a fan of tennis and old enough to have followed their careers from the start. I started watching tennis in the late 80's when Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, Martina Navratilova, Hana Mandlikova, a bit of Billie Jean King, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the very beginning of the Steffi Graf era, Gabriela Sabatini, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, Mary Joe Fernandez, Zina Garrison, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, Mary Pierce, Lindsay Davenport, Jana Novotna, Martina Hingis, Venus & Serena, Ana Kournikova through to the current era. I have never witnessed them speaking bad about other players. They have spoke about having confidence in themselves when speaking about how they expect to win matches against players...but they never have said anything about specific players. Even when Justine wasn't truthful about holding her hand up during a play at the French Open that caused Serena to lose a game..she not once said anything negative about Justine...and I know I sure as heck would have with a Grand Slam Championship on the line. If you go back and watch some of those earlier matches, you will not hear them speak ill of another player. I need to see it to believe it.

Sorry to say this but the Williams sisters used to intimidate and bully other players (Henin and Sharapova have spoken out in public about this but their are other victims) in the locker room. So that sheds another light on their behaviour on court.
@francisvandermosen302

Justine said things on Belgian tv which she never said anywhere else after being retired and it corroborates what Sharapova said about Serena. Justine was bullied in the locker-room by both Venus and Serena for not being tall and Sharapova was intimidated by Serena right before a Wimbledon final because they both (Serena and Masha) just got engaged and Serena showed off her big ring to show her that it was bigger than hers... But could you stop insulting me, I´m just pointing to the fact that the Williams sisters are not all that innocent. Neither are Maria and Justine. They would sometimes come across as cold and not very social on the Tour.

This match took place when the Williams versus Hingis/Davenport tension was at the worst. The latter two openly vowed to meet each other in the final by each dismissing one sister (commentators at 38:00 confirms that). Davenport's remarks after the final on Venus and her father were also very dismissive. Her attitude would change in 2001 but at this stage she was even more vocally insulting than Hingis. (Not saying she could not voice her opinions and she had the right to like or hate other players, but her wording was very unacceptably glum.)

@@freekyreek404 and that's why their father taught them very well how to handle all that nonsense with mental strength, skills, determination and confidence to overcome all that bs. That adversity made them stronger. Hence Serena becoming the GOAT of all time. Even Evert and Navratilova would say things every now and then as Serena neared surpassing their 18 Grand Slam wins. Steffi and Monica were both very gracious to the Williams Sisters and Steffi has said multiple times that she hoped Serena would overtake her record. Steffi was the realest back in the day. She wasn't about the friendships and was on a mission to become an all time great. The only person that she became friendly with was Gabriela Sabatini who also became her doubles partner for a few events. Gabby has the most wins (11) against Steffi Graf. Gabriela was a class act as well along with Mary Joe Fernandez who always said kind words about the sisters.

I know I’m 10 months late. That was Pam Shriver (a notorious Venus and Serena HATER). She used to give a lot of biased and down right hateful commentary during their matches especially during the 90’s and early 2000’s when the sister dominated women’s tennis and were ranked #1 and #2 in the world. She even made nasty comments about their hair when they used to wear beads back in the day! The courts were slowed to get rid of the court specialization on the men’s side. You would see someone like Kuerten only win the French but not be competitive at Wimbledon or the US Open. There’s no way to speed up clay but you can slow down the hard courts and grass.

@Justin Cartwright, IMO? IT'S BAAAA-ck! The USOpen '21 saw the first wave of young adults who have been emulating the Williams, Federer, Nadal, Nole their entire (20-year!) lives and the speed, footwork, intuitive, physics-defying angles flying off their racquets in both the mens and womens' game was exhilaration. The two womens' Semifinals featured outrageous, young-Serena-esue serving accuracy, and mesmerizing, fearless, autonomic adjustments which they used to turn defensive shots into offensive attacks. Sound like anybody else that reminds you of, defense into offense with her back to the net? Venus was the queen of the shot, the blind, backhand overhead volley that left Davenport, Hingus, Mauresmo Henin, Cjlister's, Kornikova, and a host of others stuck in their tracks, not knowing where to move next. The 2021 Grand Slam had 10 players doing that against each other sometimes on the same day. I think we're in for another Stellar streak-just my opinion. But I have won over $10,000 in personal that's against Hard Rock headed folks who doubted every word I said. You didn't read that there.
