Probably the best case of a hybrid unit using magic weapons is Saizo using the flame shuriken in Fates, where since the ninja class is so good and he has 55% Str & 45% Magic he is practically the only ninja that can effectively use both phisical and magic shuriken

I married Kagero to Hayato and the resulting Rhajat could actually use both sides of the spectrum.

Flame Shuriken was probably made to make Maid/Buttlers better. But they put on Hoshidon even if most Ninja will ever end up having almost no Magic.

TearRing Saga has an interesting version of the split promotion you mentioned with Griffon/Wyvern knight, because they only have one promotion, Wyvern, but there are reasons to not promote them and keep them as a pegasus. Pegasus knights have like 12 or 13 magic, more than pretty much all other physical units, and they can use levin swords that have great might against most enemies that have little to no res. Promoting to wyvern buffs all there other combat stats, but they get minus 6 in magic, so whether you promote them depends on whether you want a hybrid unit or traditional combat unit. Also your point about Anna reminds me of Three Houses Annette. Shes a traditional mage for the most part, with great rallies that give her some support, but there's a strategy where you put her down wyvern and then give her Crusher in Azure Moon, which deals magic. This is a really strong endgame build that is basically the only way without DLC to have a magic flier, but until you get Crusher Annette is gimping herself by learning skills for wyvern and not magical classes.

I tend to keep comments concise so I guess the meaning didn't quite get across last time, so I'll explain what I meant. I was going on the basic definition of a hybrid class being one that has both physical and magic weapon types, so basically any tomes + physical weapon class. Barely any unit will be making good use of both physical and magic weapons at once, so physical oriented units will prefer full physical classes and magic oriented units will prefer full magic classes. Physical classes tend to have low resistance, and magic classes tend to have low defense. Hybrid classes have a decent amount of both def and res, which is valuable for tanking the most difficult enemy formations in any game, a mixture of physical and magical enemies. tldr no one uses str and mag at the same time, but many can benefit from the def/res combo of switching to a hybrid class.

Dude, your Bow Knight Anna is a top tier example of a good hybrid unit. Archers have 2 things that differentiate them from most other physical classes: they can chip from a range and they are excellent for taking down flyers. For the first one, Bow Knight gives an even better range for doing that thanks to their higher movement and having the option of hitting either def with a normal bow or res with a magical one (if the archer has some Magic like Anna does) can make this more useful since you have more liberty in choosing the amount of dmg you do. As for the flyers? You can take down the low def Pegasus with a normal bow while you can take down the low res Wyverns with a Shining Bow! Archer classes might be the ones where a hybrid unit shines the most and I hadn't even considered that until I heard your example. A high str/mag difference can be quite harming as you say tho. Maybe that could be fixed with a class skill that does something like "if the used offensive stat (str or mag) is below the other one by (amount), adds +5 MT to weapon." Or something like that to sort of bridge the gap.

I'm not a fan of Anna but I would say she would always be better in mage Knight. Her strength is low enough that she fails to kill Griffins with a Silver Bow anyway so she may as well just boost her magic with Mage Knight instead of dealing with a much lower cap

I think birthright's oni chieftain is a pretty good example pf how to make hybrid units. Having access to horse spirit, clubs, and bolt axe on a unit with good attack and decent magic supported by seal res makes them effective units for soloing both sorcerers and generals in br. What makes them good is the high defense and decent res+horse spirit.

On that point of Citrine barely keeping up with one-rounding enemies, I find that Canter is stupidly busted for that. I see your using Olwen and that's pretty good but for the strat I use since Olwen Ring can't be traded around, I find that instead just forge Thoron and engrave it with Radiant engraving. You can cast Thoron, Canter away, and then come in with the second mage to then trade Thoron off of the first and Thoron the same or different enemy. This is how I used Ivy, Pandreo, and Hortensia for a while since I didn't have Olwen nor did I feel like they needed Emblems. Hitting an enemy with Thoron twice is like a sure fire way to kill almost everything. Very fun, especially with I y and Hortensia as they can do it accross a void or ocean to just kill everything without facing combat. Will admit that last bit is map dependent but still very fun when its pulled off. Seeing such scary enemies with ridiculously high stats fold without a Thoron or Longbow is funny, and if you have the void or ocean on your side, not even a longbow nor Thoron of their own can save them. Sure, it ain't one rounding, but it does allow for two units with minimal investments kill almost any enemy on Maddening. All the characters have the base SP to do it. That's also something I like about Engage's pre-promotes. Not having to maximize Micaiah and Mercurius efficiency to just inherit skills is nice. A shame Ivy joins too late to inherit canter, but that just means Citrinne will start the Thoron chain with this strat instead. I don't use Citrinne tho, but for y'all who do, well there's a fun strat to try if you don't have DLC nor Olwen S Bond Ring.

Hybrids prefer using magic simply because most enemies have lower res than def - it's not a knock against their hybridness, it's adapting to how enemies are designed. Being in a hybrid class, does not equate to being a hybrid unit, while a hybrid unit doesn't need a hybrid class to be effective. It's also not about using both damage types equally, it's being able to complement one with the other - high defense general will take minimal damage from physical attacks, so if you're a physical unit you have to grind him down, while a hybrid can just nuke him with a magic weapon or at least heavily damage him. Analogically, the same applies to magic enemies with sky high res. Hybrid units don't have the damage output of physically or magically oriented ones, but they're much harder to be stopped dead in their tracks by enemies resistant to a particular damage type - lower highs, but also higher lows.

Odin is by far my favourite hybrid unit to use, but he's kind of a case where he prefers to bounce between the specialized magical class (Sorcerer) and the specialized physical class (Master of Arms) rather than trying to do both in a hybrid class like Dark Knight.

The ultimate hybrid class is any of Engage's arts using ones since arts take the average of your strength and magic. Which just ends up doing minimal damage unless your name is Chloe, or you have the Eirika ring. I was so disappointed when I realized that arts are bad in Engage since I was so excited to let my healers punch people in the face

Even Chloe doesn't do much damage with them since her attacking stats are balanced but that has the negative of both being lower than most other units.

Mage Knight and Dark Knight has more bulk. It's just the games you want to nostank only allows infantary magic units to use nosferatu XD I use Leo bulk to double with his personal tome on enemy phase About magical weapons I think hybrid is a very questionable term because there is a difference between, physical and magical weapons and tomes. FE12 mages reclasses to swordmaster is magic units to me, but physical swordmaster using levin sword is hybrid. It's confusing

I see, so it's finally here. I'ma definitely enjoy this one. 9:00 Exactly. That's what I was tryna tell that other fella I mentioned in my previous comment on the previous hybrid video. Trying to compare Asbel to Perne when I discussed Perne being the best mix of Combat/Utility hybrid is silly when Asbel goes from tearing ass to healing pointless injuries just because you want staff rank. That's why I think Perne is better in the context of both Combat/Utility cause he comes with both without any grind that basically pauses your use of the other just so both aspects of combat and utility can be equal. I understand if that other fella I mentioned wants to argue that Asbel probably is better than Perne because of his contributions with his excellent combat, but ain't no way is he better at being a Combat/Utility hybrid than Perne when it takes so many turns to get good staves. Torch staff at base ain't nothing to write home about either cause thieves and the basic Torch are good enough. Physic is okay to get with one staff rank up, but vulneraries that heal to full give it some rough competition alongside Thracia being the second easiest game that's easy to dodge tank besides Binding Blade. I just don't understand why one would use Asbel this way when Saffy, Nanna, and Linoan are available. They typically don't offer much beyond staves but can use them at base, so you don't need scrolls nor promotion to make them good for utility since staves have infinite range and they'll get staff rank since combat is hardly what they'll be doing anyway. They basically free up scrolls and promotion items for others to use. I guess the point could be argued towards why not use Lifis over Perne with a promotion, but honestly the combat of Lifis is so atrocious and thief utility only needs to be used for certain items at the point Perne comes in because you'll either have the weapons you'll use for most of the game or you can capture reliably. What to steal at that point is magic weapons that you don't want to drain durability from with capturing and weapons from foes who only have the one singular weapon so you basically disable them with a guaranteed steal. Between those turns of this utility, you may as well make Perne do combat which is where Lifis sucks with 0 FUCM leading to every double attack not criting and 0 skills to his name aside from Vantage on promotion which doesn't work quite as well as Perne. Still, I guess you could just grind Lifis with All the Crusader scrolls you get and Promote him and he'll be better at that point at least in terms of stats. This is kinda what sucks about Thracia discussions because I can talk this much about any topic or comparison and Thracia and it'll not matter once Crusader scrolls are taken into account. That 0 FUCM on Lifis still sucks tho.

I know I'm going to regret bringing this back up but you seem to have understood nothing I said previously. I never said stop Asbel's combat so he can grind staff rank. I said if there was a turn where there was nothing for him to kill, he could heal instead. If there isn't an enemy in range he can move into their range to enemy phase them, and heal an ally at the same time making it so he doesn't waste that turn and saving you a vulnerary use. Fatigue is also a thing so your healers won't always be able to be fielded meaning when he isn't fighting, his healing will be even more useful. This isn't even bringing up that half the time Safy and Tina may not even have any staves on them. They are great to heal someone, them trade their stuff away to have a strong enemy capture them and cripple their stats in the process. This allows you to kill or capture said enemy with almost no problem. Perne isn't really helpful at all. 7 strength at that point in the game is horrible, and you already have Lifis as a thief. Plus you can easily replace a thief anyway since you can and should buy door keys and capturing is a thing. It is very easy to capture enemies without them using their weapons. Finn has a Brave Lance, Dagdar and Osian have access to the Brave Axe, and Osian has such a high crit rate he can very likely kill on his first hit. You don't need that many combat units in Thracia so having mediocre combat on the last thief you get isn't useful at all.

Ahhhh, the continuation. I said my piece last time. My opinions haven't changed a whole lot yet. I'm still conflicted in what the "best" implementation could be. I've stared at a lot of numbers over the years (spreadsheets are goated) and almost anything short of introducing new formulas that work on different parameters won't change the underlying balancing act of stats. The next best thing in fire emblem after maths is theming/characters. Some units are stronger, some weaker, some characters really love magic but after picking up a lance they become a different unit in both character and stats. My current theory of the week to help hybrid units stand out is to build it into their character dialogue and have the unbalanced nature of hybrid units be represented thematically. Headcannon example: A middle aged mercenary living in the Jehanna deserts (fe8) gets dunked on by another mercenary group, gets rescued by an older lady who happens to be some mystical shaman. He learns her arts as a form of "payment for saving his life" before the old lady dies. He was never particularly strong and although he had good skill with the lance he has now unleashed his latent talents in dark magic. Thematically interesting, joins midway through the game, has high lance rank but low to medium might, balanced out by medium to high magic and access to dark tomes. His higher skill stat also increases his hit rate with said tomes and makes him a valuable team member. Sure there's no lance/dark magic infantry class in fe8 but.... Ehhhh. On a casual playthrough you would likely just use his tomes but because he only had a shitty flux when he joined and a pretty cool steel/silver lance you might just be tempted to make him use both.... Or you rip the lance out of his hands, give it to Seth and 1 man army your way through the game without him... Again.

Only example I can think of a unit that is a Hybrid Class that would just prefer a pure Physical set is just Balthus from Three Houses who is meant to be a War Monk. His magic stats unless given high investment in a pure magic class then he is better just switching to a Warrior or War Master build to just be a pure physical damage dealer. He just stands out with this the most because he is in the group of all good to great Magic Units in the Ashen Wolves

the idea of "physical class with magic weapon because good magic growth for unit" from the start of the vid, about how magic-focused Anna is in Engage, reminds me of a silly build I picked up from some Fates 'what if?' theory work video I'd watched -- Paladin Sakura with a bolt naginata. And maybe if we get more future FEs that give healers access to a basic attack option (3H's Nosferatu, for example), if not more (the rest of 3H's offensive Faith options), we can start chipping away at "staff/healing magic access isn't hybrid" as part of the argument against stuff like Trickster and Warpriest counting as a hybrid class (being melee with staff) vs Dark Knight or Oni Chieftain (melee with tome), esp. when both can make use of their physical weapon families' token magic weapons (Levian Sword and Bolt Axe)
