Hi - thanks for this. I have used these before, not for a few years! Nice to see some tips before I move my washing machine. I wanted to get the clips but I think they have withdrawn the 15mm ones, but I am sure they can be purchased elsewhere. One note, I had one pipe going up into the ceiling which leaked, this was due to a plasterboard being fitted and pressing on the joint. Other than that I have had no leaks in over 10 years

Hi Vikki, Mrgonetopot is right regarding dead legs. You don't want any dead legs in your supply. These dead legs occur at any point in the line where a stopped/capped end has been used, preventing water from escaping the line. Over time this trapped water could become stagnated. If you have capped off the line temporarily, this should be perfectly fine for several months (correct me if I'm wrong somebody please), but if the capping is permanent, I would strongly advise eliminating the dead leg to a maximum of 100mm in length. Other than that, I admire you for taking the time to have a bash at this job yourself. Well done. Personally, if I was going to do this job myself, I would elbow off the line with a washing machine tap (elbow type) so that the hoses are vertical and not under stress/ wear. I would have fitted a single check valve before the tap to prevent back siphonage of the water from washing machine. I would no way have used that compound on that copper length at the start. It's totally unnecessary. Also I would use more clips to ensure a straighter run. I would have used copper tubing over plastic, but then I'm the traditional type I suppose :D Another tip, tighten plastic fittings such as washing machine hoses only by hand, otherwise you could split the rubber washer. When tightening up copper fittings, hand tight first, and then a nip up with spanners about a quarter turn and it's usually trial and error testing for leaks. Hope this helps!!

Another flawless victory, then :o) Just a quick note for the future, for when your pipe-cutting shears (or snips - call them what you will) become dull: when you cut, Instead of using them like scissors, which can be seriously hard work and may cause nipping at the cut end of the pipe, line the pipe up in the blades of the snips, where you want to make the cut, apply light pressure to the snips, and twist the pipe, increasing the pressure as you go. A bit like using the twist cutter on copper pipes. You'll likely find this puts a much better, cleaner cut on the end of the soft pipe, it'll extend the life of the snips, you'll find cutting so much simpler and you won't end up with one forearm that looks like it fell off Popeye and you found it kicking about :o) Keep up the good work - You're a brilliant role model for women everywhere who have been deceived in to believing they can't or shouldn't do stuff like this.

They have their uses these fittings, but they have opened up a can of worms for us plumbers to the mess we have to deal with by some incompetent people (plumbers included) leave behind them as these fittings are very easy to deal with and can inhibit laziness. This isn’t aimed at you Vikki but is a great example that you had never done plumbing before this and what you were able to achieve with no training. Pop a piece of pipe in the isolator on the hot and then a cap on the end of that to finish off. Jobs a good ein 👍🏻 well done you.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK6 жыл бұрын
Thank you and will do once I fit the sink - I'll pinch one of the cap ends. And I can't imagine what you might see from someone who's tried without doing any research beforehand.
@nickcollins75686 жыл бұрын
You can join the plastic speedfit pipe into a compression fitting if you want as well. Just use the ordinary non superseal pipe insert and make sure the olive is a copper one and not brass as this is softer and will compress better and make a good seal

Keep learning and saving. Top tips. Don’t use the main stop tap too often for shutting off the supply, it will start leaking up the shaft, or they have been known to snap! Always introduce isolation valves to your new pipe work or appliances going forward. Also you shouldn’t need any compound on compression fittings, get some decent pipe grips and an adjustable wrench 🔧. You got the right tools to make a clean cut end so the olive should do its job just fine. Flexible tap hoses may well come with your new tap, there’s many different sizes just to make simple plumbing that bit more confusing!
@jacobphillips79566 жыл бұрын
Isolation valves, will restrict water flow. No need to keep adding them as long as has 1 point of isolation, stop taps will stop leaking if you tighten up the gland, if stop tap handle snaps then you have over tightened it. and "simple plumbing" is different to proper plumbing. No plastic on show. Copper and soldered joints and bends.
@idi0tdetectioninprogress6 жыл бұрын
Jacob Phillips New builds I’ve managed did’nt use copper anyway, saves on theft,hot works, permits and fire watch. Here we are viewing simple domestic plumbing, which it all is. Isolation valve at point of use is no big deal, the final outlet will be restricted in some form anyway. I also seriously doubt any DIY’er would start messing with the stopcock if it starts leaking, so it’s not the best idea to be using that every time something needs isolation.

Nice job. But You should add more clips to the wall to hold the tubing. The general rule is 5 to 6 centimeters at each end of a T or angle fitting for tubing up to a size of 1 inch in diameter. And a distance of 2 hammer handle lengths between each clip on the tubing itself. Also a snap cord or spirit level helps to position the clips so the tubing doesn't zig zag afterwards.

I think the only thing I would have done different is to install a water hammer arrestor. Some washing machines, especially older models, have fast operating valves. As the washer is filling, water is obviously moving through the pipes. But water has mass and inertia. If the valve shuts too quickly, you can experience what's known as water hammer when the force of the water suddenly has nowhere to go and slams into the pipes. This can cause a loud bang and sometimes damage the washer or the plumbing. A water hammer arrestor provides a cushion for this water to go. If you google it, you'll find all sorts that you can buy but they're just as easy to make by installing a T- fitting and a branch that leads straight up for maybe a foot and then dead ends. This will create an air pocket to cushion the fast moving water. Eventually that air pocket in the arrestor will be absorbed and it will fill with water. So all you'll have to do for maintenance is to drain the line, thereby reintroducing air into the arrestor. But you shouldn't have to do this more than once every few years or so. Overall, nice job!
@almostanengineer4 жыл бұрын
It's probably a little too late, but I would recomend popping a short length ofcapped pipe in that hot isolator behind the washing machine, just incase the valve starts to leak slightly.

Nice job and having the courage to do this plumberwork. A couple of advices, work straight and plumb, use more supports (your pipe will sag) but most of all, get a waterpumpplier(s). Plumbers take pride in not damaging their couplings like it's done with grippliers. Big nono. Use the right tools for the right job. For the kind of jobs you do once and need a single piece of equipment, look in the $5-bin in your hardwarestore, but as DIY you need a decent starterset. Most of the time it will be a combinationplier, (side-)cuttingplier, needlenose- or flatheadplier, waterpumpplier and an adjustable wrench. Most of the time these are sold in combinationboxes and are cheaper then sold separatly. Take the set of a decent brand or making, because you'll use these on a regular base. Those grippliers........ let me say this, as a pro, I've only used them in metalworks, never in DIY. I don't even own one.
