The Global Commons Forum, organized by the University of Tokyo and RIKEN, with sponsorship from Mitsubishi Estate, was held on October 8, 2024. The forum opened with remarks by President Makoto Gonokami of RIKEN, followed by a keynote speech by Prof. Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Prof. Rockström introduced the Planetary Health Check, an initiative that began in September 2024, which annually assesses the "health of the planet" through the latest data. He emphasized that the current economic system requires immediate and large-scale transformation.
The keynote speech was followed by a dialogue between Prof. Rockström and Naoko Ishii, Special Presidential Envoy for Global Commons and Director of the Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo. The discussion addressed the critical role of science-particularly the concept of "planetary boundaries"-in raising awareness about the crises we face, the possibilities for overcoming these crises, what is needed for the planet to return to a safe operating space, and the mechanisms required to govern the global commons effectively.
