I feel that it is important to state for the record that a proper Chip Butty sandwich tastes and smells nothing like the horrors that Hank concocted. We must not blame the English for this monstrosity. We place the blame where it lies: With Hank. -John

I appreciate that, at the end, John states that he's going to "hang out with (Hank's) son." Not just because it's a wonderful representation of good uncling (as an uncle myself, I'm an avid fan of other uncles who try their best), but also because it subtly implies that Hank is not invited, which is also an excellent representation of great brothering.

Yorkshire lass here and I second this. Hank's mistake wasn't just to miss the breadcake (bread bun if you're from anywhere else) or include dry and limply sickly non-chip-shop chips which are always inferior, but also to miss the crucial ingredient: REALNESS and a heart of gold (gold colouration may or may not be due to melted butter)

As a New Orleanian, I'd like to relate the story of the French Fry Po-boy, which is essentially a Chip Butty on "French" bread. I put "French" in quotations because having been to both France and Spain, I can attest that New Orleans-style French Bread is actually Spanish Bread. Many things in New Orleans are pretending to be French, when they are actually Spanish, Italian, African, or Choctaw, a sign that while French colonialism leaves behind fewer actual cultural remnants than others, it always, always leaves behind the "hide you aren't French"-habits formed under French cultural elitism. But I digress. The Spanish bread sandwich known as the Po-boy, originally Poor Boy, has its origins during a street car (that's trolly to yankees) worker strike circa the turn of the 20th Century. To help the workers get through the long day of picketing, the restaurant nearby put their two cheapest items together: french fries and french bread. While I'm sure it was butter or mayo moistening most of those original poor boy sandwiches, my grandfather always had his with butter and ketchup and he's the one who introduced me to them, so I say this is a direct cousin to the Chip Butty. Currently anyone who enjoys the sandwich enjoys it with Roast Beef Debris (brown roast beef gravy, debris because there is absolutely no care paid to how much roast beef ends up on your sandwich with it) and cheese, most likely cheddar, making it also a cousin of another French colonial invention, the Quebecois poutine. This leads me to believe there may have been an Acadian connection, either in simple preference for potatoes on bread, or some sort of Chip Butty-like precursor from the Old Country that enabled the invention of the french fry sandwich New Orleans-style. (I take my po-boy the debris and cheddar way, with some hot sauce, pickles, and a Barq's Root Beer. )

This is such a great summary of the New Orleans vibe in general. I would like to add one thing: while the NOPD is woefully ineffective at lowering the murder rate, they do have a Department of Parades. If you pay them like $300 they will send a 15-piece marching band to follow you around for the day. Also you could get a fully alcoholic daiquiri through a drive-thru window until the late ‘90s. Just New Orleans things

As an England-er, your surprise and fascination with chip butties is hilarious. Ketchup (or brown sauce, yuk), not mayo, is the way though! You must refrain from calling them 'fries' though. :D Chips are not fries!

I feel that's part of the problem - American style french fries are different from British chips.

The way I made them at the pub was you take the chips and then load bacon and cheese and maybe some aioli and put it in the broiler then take then in-between a hoagie roll

@@atomicmrpelly butter (or marg), and ketchup is the way to go for sure. Tbf the chips in that butty were definitely more like "chips" than "fries"... Iirc yanks call them steak fries(?). Also... That's loaf bread, not a butty... So it's a chip sandwich at best, so maybe fish sauce and chip sandwich does need mayo :p

I feel positively compelled to explain to the UK nerdfighters that in America we call ALL fried potato strips "fries". Even the thick cut ones. Those are steak fries but lots of folks just call them fries. They're all fries. Unrelatedly the doctor who attended my birth was named Doctor Bong and I was born via cesarian at 4:23pm. So close.

@@rederik99 I agree, and I am a big fan of Lewis and the whole team at MB. I'm just worried that they'll get the aero worked out too late in the season. Ferrari isn't going to stay stagnant throughout this season, so if they have this good of a platform now, they may be that far ahead, say by summer break. I'm not saying to rule anything out now, but overall I'm very pleased to see Ferrari doing well, and Leclerc bringing it to the rest of the top teams.

@@Jared-C and it’s great to see how competitive most of the midfield is! Can you imagine the team with the worst car on the grid (we’re going to assume williams has the weakest 2022 car) finishing in p10 in a race last year? Seems like the midfield is wide open from spots 4 through 10 and it’s a toss up who scores points. It’s great!

What I like about this is that John’s reaction to the sandwich is the same as every Brit watching. Get one from a greasy spoon when you’re next going to Plough Lane / otherwise over here. Those chips were wrong, the sauce was wrong and possibly even the bread. Get a good one some time!

You should try the Irish alternative: the Crisp Sandwich(TM). You take what we call crisps and what you in the USofA call 'chips' and put them inside heavily buttered slices of bread. The best part is when you finish the assembly and squash the sandwich down to break the crisps up. Best flavours of crisps/chips for this are a) cheese and onion (standard) or b) salt and vinegar (also acceptable, and even preferred by some).
