UTV Overheating? EASY Water Pump Install to Clean Mud Off Your Radiator on the Trail

When you're blasting through puddles on the trail, your radiator can get clogged up blocking airflow and causing overheating issues. We've run into this a couple times on our last overlanding trip where we didn't really have a good way of cleaning it off.
I found a small 12V DC water pump on amazon with a hose attachment and mounted it underneath our hood. We always carry at least a couple gallons of water with us on our trips, so now we should be able to plug it in and give our radiator a quick spray down wherever we are.
The pump wasn't very expensive - it's hard to find a small enough pump to fit under the hood, so time will tell how it holds up, but we're going to give it a try this summer!

I just learned this the hard way with my KRX. Also, sometimes a heavy flow of water is better to dislodge the crud. How is the pressure without the nozzle? And this would work if you just kept the whole kit and caboodle in a box and broke it out when needed, right? No need to mount it?

You’re right about the water flow and pressure. In fact you need to be careful using pressure washers because you can damage your radiator. The problem without the nozzle is the pump won’t shut off. It just keeps running. The nozzle also keeps water use down, something we have to watch at times when we’re in the middle of nowhere. Otherwise - it would work just fine keeping it in the box. I decided to mount it and now I store the hose and nozzle under the hood too, just to make space for other things under the seat. Uh oh! Lol. It was a surprise when it first happened to us for sure. We did have the first pump fail shortly after this video. I’d love to find a better quality one, but we replaced it and this one has been holding up fine ever since.

How has the pump held up to vibration and abuse? Still happy with it?

Vibration wise fine. It’s hard to prime, so you gotta keep the water up at the same height. Kind of a pain but doable. I may re-do it with a better quality pump.
