How is the Clam holding up after a year? I’m looking at one but the zipper and stitching reviews are making me second guess.
@TheNorthwoodsFamilyКүн бұрын
No problems… but it’s really only seen a season and a half of use. We had a warm winter of ‘23-24, so it didn’t make it out of the basement. Haven’t had it out this year yet but might have it out next weekend actually. So there’s maybe a dozen trips to the lake on it so far.

Great video! Looking forward to seeing what adventures 2025 has for the family. The HD looks nice. Ride command plow mode is a big help too. If you haven’t tried it, when in plow mode it automatically raise the blade when you shift to reverse and lowers it in drive. Back drag mode works in reverse of the regular plow mode. Automatically lowers the blade in reverse and raises in drive. Might want to conciser a winch strap when plowing to minimize wear and tear on the winch rope.

Yes, it’s almost never an issue, even leaving them open for a long time. Sometimes if you stack the wood a little funny and have the doors open just a little you can get a weird draft for a moment but it’s rare.

Thanks! I made my own actually - you’re right it’s much easier than what we did. I keep a pre-attached tow strap on the front and back bumpers secured with a zip tie so I can grab and go real quick if needed. I bring a drill operated winch along so we can winch in a different direction too and I check every crack now with a spud bar before crossing.

Nice kiln, is it still holding up? Have you considered adding concrete blocks (or something else) as heat trap, so it extends heat when sun goes down? It's not recommended for lumber because you don't want too much stress on the lumber, it seems great for firewood And other question, why do you open your vents more during summer than during winter? Again, that seems logical for lumber because you don't want too much heat but firewood? There is no such thing as too much heat for firewood :) I hope you don't mind me asking these questions, I have plan to build smaller variant of this just for personal firewood drying so just getting as much info as I can before Thanks
@TheNorthwoodsFamily12 күн бұрын
It is. A couple outside panels the plywood is starting to separate so we’ll have to replace that sometime. Haven’t thought about the concrete but that’s not a bad idea. With the vents I’m trying to balance retaining heat versus expelling moisture. In winter I close them down to retain more heat. I’m not scientific about it at all honestly… I’ve noted humidity levels a few times. I suppose to really maximize drying I’d adjust it every day or more. But I don’t have time for that 😂
@berightback145612 күн бұрын
@@TheNorthwoodsFamily yeah, I get what you are saying. In my build I plan to leave vents out and just have one with solar exhaust fan that has temperature sensor (saw idea from another solar kiln video). So I can set certain temperature it activates on and have nearly user input free kiln. That is idea at least, I do still need to find good product, didn't even start to look at that yet Thank you for your reply ;)

@TheNorthwoodsFamily This IS really what I ve been searching for. Thank you for your video. I am from europe And have similar setup with my fireplace insert, but still tuning it because it can heat About 65% of our house. I dont have furnace so its air distribution system made Just for fireplace insert. I guess my two fans May not be powerfull enough to get that air trought all rooms... Can I Ask please, what amount of air per hour can your fan distribute? Can you post whats type of fan it is?? Thank you again and wish you doing great
@TheNorthwoodsFamily12 күн бұрын
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to go measure what our fan actually moves. Our fan moves air at 20 mph (9 meters / second) through a 6” (15 cm) diameter pipe. It works out to 345 cubic ft / minute (or 9.8 cubic meters / minute). That’s at the fan… through one duct right off the fireplace. The more ducts that branch off, of course, the more air velocity you lose. I’ve thought about adding another electric fan or two farther along the duct work to assist, or potentially some Bluetooth controlled heater vents because some rooms in our house tend to get really warm and other stay colder. Not because of the fireplace, just how our house is designed.
@TomasArnos11 күн бұрын
@TheNorthwoodsFamily Thanks this is great info. We have two main branches from hot air box, for each floor, 6"pipe too, First floor 600 cubic meters per hour, second floor 1000 cubic meters per hour. Total volume of air in our house to heat is About 900 cubic meters, so, I think if I added one more fan it would be great, And couple of ceiling fans with reverse mode to get warm air from ceiling down is planned. Looking forward for your update, or tuning. Wish you Best luck

We don’t have a paper version right now - printing makes it cost prohibitive at this time. So the best we’ve come up with is files to download that you can load them onto a GPS, Ride Command or even Google Maps. northwoods.family/badger-overland-trail If you still like paper maps (like me), buy the Wisconsin Map book from VVMAPPING.COM - Google Maps doesn’t show off-road trails, so at some of those points, the trail will look like it’s just traveling across open terrain. At those points, the VVMAPPING book will show you where the trails are. Even though we plotted it, there’s still some navigation that has to be done on the way, and that’s part of the challenge. Let me know if you run into any snags!

Thanks for nice video description. After all, the Eskimo is great for familly and better fabric. Full open door easier to come insid with stuff. The clam probably better for tall people but is not an issue as most of time we're sit on chair but less much room for gears as you show us with the Eskimo. Also high pocket storage good for tall guy but not for little children to range their stuff.

@TheNorthwoodsFamilyАй бұрын
Awesome! So many great ways to see the Black Hills. Fuel can be an issue even in your car out there. I’d try to fill up whenever my tank got below 1/2 when we lived there. If you plan you’ll be ok. Check ahead and know what towns have gas stations. Not all of the small ones do. We carry six extra gallons with the General. I would definitely carry at least 3 gallons anywhere I went even for day rides. When you get to 1/4 tank at the lowest be sure you’re headed towards gas and that 3 gal will be your reserve.

Not hot at all. We have a stone mantle, we followed the specs for how high to set it. We have fabric decorations up there, matches, deer antlers. A TV would be no issue.

Hey man, best side by side hauling video I've seen. Great job! Only thing I do different is i strap at the wheels that way zero compression on the suspension. But the way you tied looks great with just a little suspension compression. If i ever had to tie above whhels id do as your example. Thanks again
@TheNorthwoodsFamilyАй бұрын
Appreciate it! The only thing I’ve changed is I don’t test the chains. I’ve zip tied the excess now. Wheel strapping works great. I’ve done that on other trailers just don’t have the things installed on this one. I agree less compression on the suspension is better - this is pretty minimal. Thanks for the comment and stopping by the channel 🤙🏼

Question regarding the front tie down rail on the basket. I’m considering the Gen 2 so I can mount a particle separator on it. It weighs about 10 lbs. is the rail stout enough to support the weight and what is the width of the rail? Would have to drill through and bolt the separator to the rail.

Air comes in from the bottom and goes out from the top. You said it backwards
@TheNorthwoodsFamilyАй бұрын
No I said it correctly - and that’s a common misunderstanding people have. The fans suck the air in through the top vents. It is heated by the sun, and then pushed through the stack of wood. Some of the warm moist air exits the lower vents and then some of it is recirculated. I realize warm air rises… but the power of the fans is much greater than the draft that is created by the difference in air density.
