A thorough analysis as always, lads. While hindsight is 20/20, I wholeheartedly agree that some change was necessary after Young Boys to ensure the required level of energy. While Barkley was outstanding when he came on, I felt Bailey entering the game was the critical one and I can only assume a lingering doubt about his injury meant he didn’t start. Aït-Nouri has always caused us grief and McGinn’s tendency to come central and sometimes not defend with the required intent as highlighted meant he could bomb forward freely. We needed to make him vulnerable defensively, exactly as Newcastle did the week prior. Once Wolves lost his attacking threat, they offered very little going forward as we owned the centre of the park. Bailey held Aït-Nouri accountable defensively even if he wasn’t at his absolute best. A fantastic turnaround to earn the three points. On we go. UTV

I think Emery is trying to maintain some consistency at the start of the season to allow the squad to settle. As the season progresses I believe we’ll start to see more rotation especially around the centre midfield combination, e.g. Kamara (when fit) paired with Onana against better teams when we know we wont have so much of the ball, Tielemans and Barkley when we know we’re gonna be up against a stubborn low block and will have bags of possession, and different combos for everything in between
@WayneOConnor-yh2qxАй бұрын
Barkley will help when breaking down smaller teams. But I knew he was quality when we bought him I thought his footballing brain would help us breakdown low blocks.
@tristanf3981Ай бұрын
Clearly a quality player and has shone in recent matches. I do feel that it’s dependent upon opponent ie if we sense an open centre of the park with our likely ascendancy, Onana gets first crack. If, however, it’s more cagey or there is a low block to break down I’d lean the way of Barkley given he appears superior in tighter pockets. I also think that the change of Onana to Barkley is a greater chance of meaningfully changing a game in terms of our passing and movement than the opposite unless we were chasing a game late and Onana was injected in search of a winner. Onana seems slightly loose on the ball at times for all the positives he has brought to the club and team already

Great show as usual, thanks! I just wanted to add a thing. Have you seen Maadsen when hes having the ball at his feet and he starts with his "Babysteps"? If not, have a look in the build up to Durans goal. Its almost like hes tapdancing and he is always close to the ball wich makes him very, very hard to read. As a central defender i used to love when you easily could read what your opponent was about to pull out of his hat. And i really hated the ones that could "hide" their move. I think Maadsen is going to be extremly important to us and he has the whole package of what a modern defender needs! UTV!

I like Carlos which I don’t think is a popular statement but he has this self destruct button he likes to press now and again. Which results in a ridiculous pass around the 18 yard box when there was no need …then he’ll either decide to yeet someone into row z or a cheeky pull on the shirt.
@jm_journalАй бұрын
Perfect articulation of Carlos. He’ll play an 8 or 9/10 game but have a 1/10 moment which will be extremely costly. Overall I think we have missed Bailey’s width and take on ability on the right. If we are honest since he went down all of our threat has been from the left or through the middle. Having an adequate right wing replacement might be something we need to address in the Jan transfer window. In regards to the lethargy of the first half I think emery could have made some earlier subs in the midweek game to save players for the weekend if it was his plan to play an unchanged 11. I think he’ll learn from this though.
@01bigtrevАй бұрын
@@jm_journal it’s something we never had to think about last year as we were blessed with arguably two of the best in that position. Philogene to come back but I can’t remember if that’s his best position or coming in from the left

Every time Bailey got forward with the ball, Wolves doubled him up, to stop that little cutback move to the inside that he does to set up his left footed shot. But that opened opportunites elsewhere. He still had a great ball in to Watkins who missed his header fromt he back post. If there's an upside to McGinn's injury, it's that Bailey will have time to get back to his usual form. After halftime, I could feel the inevitability of our goals. UTV

I think the biggest problem Carlos is having is not starting week in week out 90mins, some players need that regularity to get into a rhythm and Carlos looked far better last season when he had a run with Ezri out right. Hasn’t become a bad footballer just doesn’t suit his game being a backup.

Mate, how many times in the past have we played one of the top teams, had them under the cosh for an hour, only for the top team to flip into another gear and win the game. That's what we're starting to do to other teams. We went up the gears against wolves and that last 30 minutes was brutal, we absolutely battered them. We are a really, really good team. On the trajectory we are on (provided we don't have to sell too many players next summer or the one after) I think we'll be challenging for the title in 2 years, if not sooner! UTV!!

One thing that confuses me is how players who manage to shine whilst in a poor team in the Prem get labelled as ‘being fine for Luton (for example) but not a top team.’ Why would a player who smashed it out the park at Luton, against the top teams, not be an incredible prospect when surrounded by elite players?

I love McGinn but I'm starting to wonder wheter the quality of the team is now beginning to leave him behind now. We're at a level which McGinn looks slightly out of his depth. I know he's been in an unfavourable position on the RW, but he's play is a bit one dimensional now. I say that with a heavy heart as he's a legend for the club. Carlos is a liability and really hope he's moved on in January. UTV

Barkley has come on and played against a low block defense. He is and will be when Bouba is back our fourth choice. Great to have him for matches like yesterday and against Everton last week, also for teams that will stay low against us, but up against the better teams I do not want him in the starting 11. Too slow in transition, with the ball (had a couple of ball losses yesterday as well) and he isnt a defensive midfielder. Lets just be happy we have great options in the squad, but come on. Onana was the signing of the season 10 days ago, lets not get carried away here.
