President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that addresses antisemitism on college campuses.
The new policy would direct the federal government to cancel student visas for what the White House calls "Hamas sympathizers."
KOMO News spoke with students and organizations on both sides of the issue at the University of Washington.
Some pro-Palestinian groups are calling it a threat to their free speech, while a Jewish organization said it’s needed to protect Jewish students from campus harassment and violence.
The president’s order would cancel the visas of non-citizen students who were found to have broken the law during protests.
Pro-Palestinian groups at UW say it’s a way of silencing them.

“I’m not surprised that they are trying to specifically target vulnerable populations through visas and through threats of deportation,” said Noah Weight.
In contrast, a Jewish organization is applauding the Trump administration for its efforts to protect Jewish students.
“This would combat antisemitism and hold those accountable who commit antisemitic harassment and violence, and this should be a clear signal that enough is enough,” said Regina Sassoon Friedland, regional director for the American Jewish Committee.
Last May, pro-Palestinian protesters took over the UW quad.
The American Jewish Committee said the weeks-long protest discriminated against Jewish students on campus and many felt unsafe.
“Some students perceived that some things were tolerated and some things weren’t followed through, and there weren’t penalties for the perpetrators of those acts, and discrimination should never be tolerated,” said Friedland.
Pro-Palestinian group Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return said Trump’s order is not going to be a deterrent.
“These repressive measures are scary, but ultimately, it’s not something that’s going to stop us in the work that we’re doing,” said Weight.
KOMO News reached out to the University of Washington for a comment on the executive order, and what it means for any pro-Palestinian events being held on the campus, but has not heard back.
