That train is supposed to be a historical monument, but it's a pity that it wasn't well maintained! The landscape of the salt flats is very desolate, but it has a spectacular beauty that is very special! The cactus forest there is really beautiful and spectacular! 15'13 The cactus in the middle makes a gesture to you, luckily it's not the middle finger, haha! Your video of the dinosaur and the potato chip jar is so cute! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful video, great job! 👍🥰🙏

I do plan to visit Bolivia within 2 to 3 years, but I want to go during the rainy season when the desert is filled with water so you get the mirror reflection of the sky effect. I do like that island of cactus over the salt flats - very nice contrast. The area reminds me of the Great Salt Lake in Utah since they also have salt flats where they do drag racing at a certain time of the year.

Very nice video!! I was in Uyuni some years ago on a motorcycle. Fortunately it was dry season, so we could drive on the salt. Fish Island (Isla Pescado) was a great visit - no entrance fee at that time. They told us that the cacti are about 500 years old.

It looked just like the Bonneville salt flats in Utah at the beginning with the cacti and everything. I live in Arizona and that island looked just like southern Arizona. Those saguaro species looked different than the ones here. They looked like a combination of saguaro mixed with cholla cacti. I've never seen cacti like those. I hope ya'll make it up to Colombia and Panama

2:38 What is the history of these locomotives? I imagine they were abandoned in the 1950s. I can never understand the wastefulness of that era because they still use steam engines in some countries. Because they don't use oil as fuel and they are perfectly capable of traversing such altitudes they could still be of use today. 3:15 Yeah with as many as they left there I suspect they left them there thinking they could rust away faster. Just a guess. I wonder if the metal melted down would be valuable.
@marmoor5515 Жыл бұрын
I can tell you a bit about the old steam trains, they went out service after the Pacific war between Bolivia and Chile; when Bolivia became a landlocked country. he trains used to transport minerals from Oruro/Potosi to Antofagasta (old Bolivian province) most of the British companies left and abandoned the trains. Bolivia had no engineers or anyone to that matter capable to keep the train running and they were left rot. Today they stand as memories of another time and a dream that never was.
@curiousnomadic Жыл бұрын
@@marmoor5515 Thanks! Didn't know it was a British operation. So they were left there over 100 years ago in 1884?
@marmoor5515 Жыл бұрын
@@curiousnomadicYes, they around 140 years , they went into service around 1860/1870 I think after the war they were used for a while maybe up to the 1900 but without proper maintenance they just went out order and eventually completely abandoned. In la Paz there are is few older train-cars that were repurposed as fast food stands.

@@N8russellyeah we might be going soon even at the start of next year. Still working out our plan. We have been to Egypt before but I suppose that is more of a middle eastern culture compared to many other African countries
@marmoor5515 Жыл бұрын
yes and no. There are locally sourced options (llama, sheep, vicuña) those are most costly and in many cases are handmade the patterns are shared between Bolivia and Peru but they are also used in Ecuador. Chile and Argentina have been selling them for the last 15 years. The patterns and colors are similar but some are specific to the region and represent indigenous nations or tribes others like llamas, condors, chakanas (Andean cross), Inti (sun) jaguars, vicuñas are more of an Andean theme. Many tourists are uninterested in more coarse knits citing allergies or simply prefer softness but refuse to pay for vicuña wool; so local Spinners, weavers and knitters are using imported acrylic materials. A good thumb rule is to ask for sheep, llama, or vicuña wool or a mix of them options.

Careful going to those places, you will get altitude sickness. La Paz and Uyuni has about the same elevation. You should take something for altitude sickness before you go there. These bloggers should have given a heads up to those watching this! I have been there and when we landed the captain of the plane said, we are now parking the plane and not landing because the elevation is very high, we were warned not to run when we deplane, just walk slowly so we don’t run out of breath😬
