The character, V, exemplifies something fundamental to the way I live. Words are tools to convey meaning, on their own they have no power, but their meanings can have greater power than any weapon wielded against you. To express those meanings requires you to use the right words, in the right ways, at the right time. This is why freedom of speech is absolutely necessary, and why artificial changes to language and censorship are not only dangerous, but are also tantamount to destruction of property and theft respectively.

Kinda sad you feel nothing for V. Was taken against his will, experiemented on, tried to kill him. He then escapes and seeks justice by taking down the monsters who did this to him (and others), while also taking down the government who controls people. He's a hero.
@TheHestya
@TheHestya 8 ай бұрын
I think the whole point is that it's complicated and heroes sometimes are also the bad guys who do bad things to other people. Where is the line? I agree with you, he is a hero and his actions by the end of the movie have saved an entire country. Millions of lives. There is no question that he is literally a terrorist as well though. That is what a person is when they murder and blow up buildings. That is what he would be called if he did these things irl, even with zero civilian casualties. How far should a person go for justice?
@amberlynYT
@amberlynYT 8 ай бұрын
V isn't a hero, He's an anti-hero. On one hand, he is just as bad as the people he kills because it's selfish motivations driving all of their actions: greed, revenge, power, etc. But on the other hand, V truly does want a societal change for the better, and his ideas and desire to inspire the people to rise up are heroic. The whole dichotomy raises such interesting dialog and questions about whether the ends justify the means, how much poor behavior is excused by past trauma, where is the line of personal responsibility in how a person behaves and the choices they make, and how do we work better as a society to progress without extremism.

FYI - this is based on a graphic novel from the 1980s by Alan Moore (who also wrote Watchmen). That was in turn inspired by George Orwell's 1984. It is amazing (and depressing!) how the film, graphic novel and book remain so relevant.

5:22 This is absolutely in my top 10 movies of all time. I know that whole speech off by heart. (Hey I was 17 at the time and I didn't drink or smoke until I was 20, so my only memory impediment at the time was sleep deprivation) but it wasn't until a few years later that I actually looked up and understood the lyrics. Vichyssoise is now my favorite V word. If someone boasts that they can spell any word to you in the future.. give em that one. If they get it right, shit I guess they are a good speller.

Alan Moore wrote this as an antifascist and anarchist manifesto against the Prime Minister ship of Margaret Thatcher. It was released in America after the wild success of his Watchmen limited series the end of Reagan's presidency. The actress was Natalie Portman, who had her head shaved for this role. V for Vendetta is the best film adaptation of Moore's work.

You nailed it in the beginning, calling out that V would have been "conducting" on the roof without Evie if she wasn't on his path that night. Because the performance was not for Evie but for London/England as whole. The good & bad, a message and a warning. V meticulously planning the entire thing for years, hacking the PA system, setting the fireworks, etc... Evie was never in the plan and in fact is an unforeseen "spanner in the works" for V. The whole thing is in motion whether she is involved or not. A main character with no real input to events, is a kinda rare, but well done here. Not saying she isn't important at all, she chose to help V, she chose to not give him up under "interrogation" and she chose to carry V's mantle.

I am curious, what is your take on if the government ever made it illegal to own guns and came to your home for them? As a gun owner myself, its a though question to answer. Many people I know say they would "kill every person trying to get in". I don't know if I would go that far, maybe if I was single I'd think that. But I don't want to die or get my family I'm trouble over some guns sadly.

The thing about ‘not wanting to die over some guns”, it is extremely difficult for an authoritarian government to commit heinous crimes against an armed populace. (Not impossible mind, just difficult..) if the government were to become tyrannical enough to confiscate guns en masse, up to and including arresting/killing anyone who refuses, then it would no longer be a government worthy of continuing. A government that is not only capable, but willing to kill its own citizens in order to Dissarm them, would have ZERO problem with rounding up and killing its citizens over any minuscule reason whatsoever…

But it was never really a problem to begin with... Port Arthur was your last "big" one from what I could find and that was 35 people. Which the government indeed overreacted and instituted a "mandatory buyback" which lets call it what it was, confiscation, which only got around 30% of them out of the country (that number is from the Australian government by the way.) There have been no supporting evidence that it had any effect on crime but it did show an effect during the lockdowns when they instituted a certain policy where people had no say and effectively removed. So no I would say it did not really work out but had an adverse effect. Most of Australia's guns are in the Outback and hidden away somewhere and the government can not do anything about it and does not need to because even from your own government most of your crime is A) Not gun related but gang related 2) With the gang thing they are typically not reported.

Plus I do not think Australia has a strong gun culture. It always has felt like Japan to me. Japan literally has/never had a gun culture but they did/have a sword/knife culture (yet everyone says Japan is a gun culture). It is why they have that particular crime problem. Australia had to have bolt action rifles and sometimes a bigger caliber gun to deal with certain things if you were in the outback but never really branched out from that. Maybe a handgun for snakes like some do in Texas but that is about the extent. I think the only countries that actually had the "gun culture" like the US were; Swiss, Russia, Serbia (I think) and Africa.

It's always so sad Americans are naive and take for granted the line "People should not be afraid of their government, government should be afraid of their people" I've seen so many countries in my life that the citizens stood up and demanding changes, and it happened. Yet in America we have so much "freedom" that we are wimps to really do much about change. There is also the line of "When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny", but that line can be less effective as its more tricky to say its accurate.

#1 best way to get invaded and become a terrorist nation is to establish your own central bank and only take gold instead of the US dollar. Works like a charm 🤣

What is bro watching "this person might have mouth diseases." You know they're in an internement camp right? Dying? Like you're really gonna complain that someone said I love you as you await experimentation/execution and everyone else treats you like a lower form of life? Also perhaps I'm wrong but I thought it was hard to miss how she pulled a 'bag' from the toilet, not just the toiletpaper itself right out of the water. This reaction has been a wild ride, still love it but just damn lol

8:12 If you think about it in this way; some people act as though they are in a TV show and there is a camera on them at all times. Just in case, they must act entertainingly... even if they are alone taking a shit. What weirdos. Yeah I think I was one of those guys in my pre-preteens. I remember I had a thought.. if I believed everything people told me, I would believe 100% of true things. Even though that would lead to leading some false things, I figured the fact that every true thing would be believed would outweigh the negatives of believing a few false lies people would tell me. Unfortunately that led to a lot of people thinking I was an idiot and taking advantage lol, so I ended up delving deeper into logic and realizing my mistake tl;dr..... but I must tell you that in my youth I did have about 1000 "saved by the bell type Soliloquy" moments where I made speeches to my closet... assuming someone, somewhere, was listening lol
