I wrote this little piece to showcase the amazing V Horns saxophones. These saxes have great playability and expressiveness. My new 'go-to' saxes!
I used them more or less out-the-box with the built in soundstage placement but adding little external reverb.
Instruments are all by Acoustic Samples
V Horns Soprano
V Horns Alto
V Horns Tenor
V Horns Baritone
The Upright (bass)
Drum Taste Jazz (kit)

Why Acoustic Samples didn’t hire you to produce a demo like this for their website is a mystery. This is incredibly convincing.

This is a FANTASTIC demo. Great composition, and skillful playing of these VIs. Listening really closely, the place that would be a tipoff for me are the few open sections where I can hear the instruments stop at soft volume. It's just too unnaturally quiet for a real performance. That could easily be fixed, though, by mixing in a bit of room tone, so there was no fade to digital black.

Fantastic arrangement. I just recently discovered this product and plan to get it to possibly replace SWAM. Do you recommend any lessons on mixing & mastering?

Thanks! Over the years I watched numerous YT videos with mixing and mastering tips but can’t really remember any specific ones. I guess new ones appear all the time too so I’d just search and see. But mostly it’s lots of practice and trial and error!

Like everyone said, excellent demo! It was one of the factors that led to me purchasing the library along with the brass. I've been having some trouble getting them to sound as full as you have them here, any tips? Getting the phrases to sound alive and not keyboardy has been a challenge too, so I'm really impressed with how natural this sounds.

It’s usually necessary to do quite a bit of editing after playing the notes in. The slow sections are tricky to make realistic so using slight amounts of pitch bend and playing with velocities and CC curves are important.

Very nice writing and programming. Sounds like the vibrato can be controlled down to no-vib, yes? Or, is there some vib baked into the instruments?
@ManyWorldsMusic
@ManyWorldsMusic 3 ай бұрын
Thanks, you can adjust the vibrato with CCs. Because these are modelled instruments they allow a lot of control over the various parameters.

@@ManyWorldsMusic is this sax library the best one you've come across? Have you worked with the Straight Ahead Samples saxophones as a comparison?
@ManyWorldsMusic
@ManyWorldsMusic 3 ай бұрын
The only other sax libs I’ve used are the SWAM ones which are really good but not as realistic sounding to my ears, Broadway Big Band Lites and Session Horns Pro both of which can sound good in the right context. Plus the Logic Studio Horns which also are effective for certain things. I prefer V Horns saxes to all those because of their versatility and sound. Never tried Straight Ahead or Glory Days so unfortunately can’t make the comparison.

Such an amazing demo! V Horns is truly great compared to other VST's/Libraries out there. I've got to ask, as someone looking into more of Acousticsamples libraries, do you think The Upright is worth purchasing? Its tough luck finding any demos for it, but it sounds great here
@ManyWorldsMusic

Thanks! I think the Upright is very good indeed. I already have Trillian and VSL Upright but the AS one is more than comparable.

here's my question did you use a wind controller to create the sax tracks or did you use the keyboard? if it's the wind controller can you tell me which wind controller and model did you use because I have further questions thank you in advance Alan Russell. professional Arranger since 1968
@ManyWorldsMusic

Hi, no I used my keyboard and lots of editing in the piano roll editor. I did try a wind controller a few years ago with SWAM saxes but I think it’s more for wind players.

OOh this is really cool!, I have them and the hornes and really love them as solo instruments with expressive Osmose + tec control. I wonder how your workflow is, do you have anything for expression or just regular midi? Also do you compose polyphonic and then convert or do you record one instrument at a time? Btw, pitch-bend on the osmose and expression with the tec-control is next level
@ManyWorldsMusic
@ManyWorldsMusic Жыл бұрын
Hi, I tend to play the notes in on a keyboard with a Korg Nanokontrol for the cc 1 and 11. But most of the time I’ll go in and edit extensively in the piano roll editor. Drawing in the CCs and adjusting velocities. I have a Tec BC but I don’t use it. I will check out Osmose as I haven’t heard of it! Thanks

I shared these with another composer recently. I'm quite impressed with the tone. I am trying to find some modeled saxophones that basically can do anything I ask it to do. I've been tempted do get SWAM but the overall tone of SWAM is more or less the thing that's the setback for me. *This* however seems to have almost nailed the actual saxophone sound. But I don't know how well it pulls off dense and colorful Hollywood Swing band/jazz orchestra type of playing. I am an owner of the Infinite Woodwinds library and while I do enjoy the saxophone stuff in it, in my opinion it does have too much "digitalized metal" sound timbre to itself as of writing this. May I ask, If I would try and get this library, are there some noteworthy things you feel I should know before nose-diving in? Or is this library like... everything that's good about the SWAM with a more successful tone? I can't exactly tell from all the demos they provide.
@ManyWorldsMusic
@ManyWorldsMusic Жыл бұрын
Having not had these for too long I do prefer them to SWAM as far as tone goes. They are less synthetic and they blend very nicely together. There are a lot of customisable parameters too. I think saxes, like solo strings are notoriously difficult to do but I’m well pleased with these and I think they should be able to cover most styles. There are two separate instruments in each sax, one more jazzy and breathy and one more classical and smooth. I used the latter for this demo.

Good job, it would sound even more real if notes werent so hard quantized. Especially between each other. Try "humanizing" (meaning not quantizing them hard on beat + between each other) them abit and results will be even better.
