Völuspa with lyrics and english translation. There are a bit more verses than usual. Especially verse 44 from where we know of Ragnarök.

Both in Swedish and English, it takes a lot, lot of thinking to understand it all. (I speak Swedish natively) I can spend hours to translate to modern Swedish from Norrönt tunga, I can not always understand the old meanings but often I can. Modern Icelandic is like a riddle to mock your understanding, so different. It is easier to read a translated book from a skilled translator. Old Norse / Swedish / Norwegian /Danish gives naturally a middle way language to translate to "Scandinavic". The feeling. When I hear a Norwegian speak English, I allways wonder if he/she is Swedish or Norwegian :) Many people think Icelandic is allways the most true Norse language in all its expressions. That is not allways true, except perhaps in the grammatics and the written language. In the spoken language, Swedish, Norwegian and maybe Danish each or commonly, still hold older common things disused in spoken Icelandic. It says Eyafjällajökull in Icelandic, means the same in all our languages, Eyafjäll-jökulen / Eyafjäll-glaciären, fjäll=berg, jökul=glaciär, but in Icelandic, it is pronounced "Ejafjattlajökul" Most people. cant speak it, but I can, because I want to, and perhaps because I am a Swede :).

The Icelandic people are Norwegians. They are the decendants that fled the west coast of Norway in 870 after they lost the Battle at Hafrsfjord, against Harald Haarfagre. They were the rulers of the Nor-Wegen, the sailing passage going northwards past the west coast of Norway, but lost the strategic land to Harald Haarfagre. He overtook the old settlements at Karmøy (Kormt), Avaldsnes, where he set up his stronghold. He was the fist unified King of Norway. Avaldsnes has a much longer history of beeing a strategic sweetspot, going back some 8000 years - but thats another story. The place is named after a King living there arround 600, he was called Ogvaldir/Augvald, and was a decendant of the old "Gods", of æse bloodline. avaldsnes.info/en/informasjon/augvald/

I believe it should be "Ár var alda, þar er Ýmir bygði.". Especially given the English side-by-side translation referencing Ymir himself.
@johanw81575 жыл бұрын
Depending on source you are correct. In Gylfaginning 3, Snorri Sturlusson cites: Ár var alda þat er ekki var. Vara sandr né sær né svalar unnir. Jörð fannsk eigi né upphiminn, gap var ginnunga, en gras ekki." Another, much more cited, source gives: Ár var alda þar er Ymir byggði, vara sandr né sær né svalar unnir. Jörð fannsk æva né upphiminn, gap var ginnunga, en gras hvergi.

Odin dies in Ragnarök, Balder will take his place
@johanw81577 жыл бұрын
I tend to disagree on that part. time is cyclical and after Ragnarok there will be another Ragnarok. Lord Oden will rule between.
@MamaHestaby7 жыл бұрын
Finally the lyrics. Thank you. Uhm, the Voluspa actually names Balder as the god whom will rule after Ragnarok.
@johanw81577 жыл бұрын
Ah, you mean stansa 60, 60. Unsown shall the fields bring forth, all evil be amended; Baldr shall come; Hödr and Baldr, the heavenly gods, Hropt´s glorious dwellings shall inhabit. Understand ye yet, or what? that would be some kind of intermediate rule. Or possibly just mentioning that Balder will be let out of Hel. I am referring to stansa 64 of Völuspa. 64. Then comes the mighty one to the great judgement, the powerful from above, who rules o’er all. He shall dooms pronounce, and strifes allay, holy peace establish, which shall ever be. This is clearly a point towards Lord Oden.
@devanloveland95152 жыл бұрын
Dang. That is a ROUGH translation. Doesn't di Voluspa justice.

A question to those who speaks Norrön: Is Einar pronouncing everything right? Becaus I read the lyrics while he is singing and dont hear him singing specific words or pronouncing it different to as its written
@germanicgems3 жыл бұрын
Modern Icelandic pronunciation has shifted a lot from Old Norse times. Thus Old Norse grǿnn (ǿ is a bit like English i in bird) is spelled grænn, but pronounced /kraitn/ (English approximation: cry-ten). Selvik uses a mix of Old Norse and modern Icelandic pronunciation, leaning towards the modern Icelandic.

"Groans that aged tree, and the giant is loosed" - does this verse refer to Loki, son of a giant? Or is there another giant in Norse mythology who is supposed to be freed when Ragnarok comes? I'd be grateful for an explanation.
@ragnarr79687 жыл бұрын
Maybe Yggdrasil is the giant, beause its the oldest and biggest tree in the world. And most trees are big, so Yggdrasil might be the Giant among the trees. I think this because when Ragnarök comes Yggdrasil will dies and so the giant tree is loosed from his roots and falls. But I dont know if thats right. Maybe im talking bullshit.
@Darth333Evas7 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting interpretation. I took the words 'the giant is loosed' quite literally and didn't think of it as a metaphor. Yggdrasil as the giant which is predicted to fall seems plausible. But since you're not sure, I think I'll dig deeper into it by learning more about Ragnarök.
@ragnarr79687 жыл бұрын
Yes thats good. I dont know all about Ragnarök and norse mythology and im still learnig about it. That Yggdrasil could be the Giant was just my first thought and it could be right but Im really not sure and I dont want to tell you shit.
@Darth333Evas7 жыл бұрын
Ok, I've done some research and it occurs the mysterious giant is the wolf Fenrir. So we both were wrong. By the way, the word 'jötunn' refers to the race of giants, so it couldn't be used as a metaphorical name for large objects (such as Yggdrasil) either way.
@ragnarr79687 жыл бұрын
Okay, thats interesting. But it makes sense, because Fenrir is a huge Wolf and the son of Loki who is a son of a giant. So Fenrir is a giant too, even if he lokks like an huge wolf. And the Gods bound him and when Ragnarök comes his fetters will break and hes free. So the Jötunn, the giant, is free. Thanks man, now it makes more sence then before and I learnd some new things about norse mythologie :D
