I know the feeling about drilling through brand new stuff. We get customers bringing in their brand new trucks to install hidden hitches and 5th wheels and front mount hitches on new cars. Measure ten times cut once and sweat the whole time haha.

Killer video! The fact that you speak clear English and I could follow along step by step without having to replay the vid in order to make sure I understood you correctly is always half the battle. So many Yoyo's out there have marbles in their mouth or a ton of background noise. You get straight to the point with no nonsense. I like that. No grand introduction to the video or unnecessary background information about how great you are or how pretty your wife is. (Yes, those video's are out there) When you press play....BOOM.....right to the job at hand. Thank you for a video well done and you've bolstered my confidence. Now I'm not apprehensive. My 2012 Muscle and I thank you!

Awesome man! Thank you so much. I knew my car expertise would help me with this motorcycle stuff. I have a video on some Vance and Hinse slip ons. I haven't uploaded it yet but look for it. I did a step by step install with before and after sound. I'm trying to get some additional footage of the sound of the exhaust for the after install of the new pipes. All the ones I've seen, the camera mic did not do a good job of showing how the pipes really sound.

Paul I work in the automotive after market installing power locks to A/C and it was always hard to make that first cut or drill hole. One thing for others is to put tape on top of tap and extend the Unibit out to the end of the shank, this will help to not hit the drill on the paint.

I guess we now know what ScannerDanner got for Xmas. :-) I’d advise getting the factory service manual for your year/model ride. It will pay for itself in the first service alone, especially given HD Dealers hourly rates (highway robbery, IMO). You can order it through your local HD dealer or online. The Electrical Diagnostics Manual (the one with the wiring diagrams) is a separate book from the service manual for my bike (’06 FXSTBI) and it might be for yours too. Saved my booty on numerous occasions. Enjoy the new ride and I look forward to seeing some videos on it.
@petrocksgarage

btw, I would re-route that tail light wire. It used to be mounted between the bracket & fender so it wasn’t directly exposed to dirt, rocks, water, whatever flying off the rear wheel as you are going down the road. Now it is exposed and it could result in a premature failure of that wire. But maybe thats not a bad thing as it would give you a good electrical diagnostic video. :-)

Hi Danny! I'm a proud owner of Your book, and watching Your videos from last 4 years. like You said I'm watching You because there is a lack of real diagnosis focused on motorcycles that's why I'm transferring what I have learned from You on to bikes. I'm happy You will focus on bike's electric/electronics as well, so first wish is - can You make some videos about CDI systems with scope vaweforms ANS IT IS DISCHARGE SYSTEM - it will be nice to see You point of view on vaweforms catched on good or bad CDI system. Dang man I'm sorry about the trouble you had. That fender is probably actually composite or glass reinforced plastic as opposed to just fiberglass. As opposed to having to lay down and resin mat after mat, a machine probably injects hot liquid plastic into a mold and out pops a fender after about 5 or 10 minutes. Also on your drill knicking the paint, I would run the bit as far out on the chuck as I could with it remaining stable. That's usually why unibits have the long hex shaped shank.

That is the purpose of the tape to protect the paint in case you have a slip, and to keep paint from chipping and that is why they tell you not to use a spiral drill bit because when the drill tip pierces thru, the cutting edge of the drill bit will grab the thin layer of plastic and could break a big chunk out of the finish. I found out the hard way when drilling holes in my boat. LolGreat video and nice bike.I cant wait to see the O2 on the scope to see if it cycles from rich to lean like a car does. I don't think it will because it don't have a catalytic converter. Does it?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 жыл бұрын
+JOHN HUFNAGEL now you have me curious. I'm betting it will still swing rich/lean which will back up the theory that the swing in the ratio is not for cat efficiency but for the system to know where stoic is on a narrow band sensor. I've always stated it was for cat efficiency but my views are changing

If you drill to the 1/2" diameter from the inside, you will chip the paint around the hole as the bit comes through. This is why they tell you to drill the full size from the outside-in.

Never picked you as a bike guy Paul. Maybe some motovlogs down the road? Nice bike though, I've thrown my leg over my 2 cousins vrod and night rods both nice bikes but I'm not a fan of forward controls haha The seats on the vrods here in Australia actually fold from the opposite side than what yours does. Bikes are pretty much the same as cars apart from when they have a CDI ignition and the way the charging system is set out. Still can use the same tricks but it can be harder to get scan data and bidirectional controls though. Fitting accessories to cars is just as frustrating and those stepped drill bits are handy but very easy to drill the hole too big (done that before on a new bumper haha)

I don't think it's fiber glass (tho i might be wrong) i believe is glass reinforced plastic. A bit different. Can't quite make it out because of the 360p video. It's the same stuff they make most new age non-cheapo bodies for drills and stuff like that. Quite tuff and takes a bit of abuse to break one, i mean, how many times do we drop our cordless drills and such. I think the reason they don't factory option this is because they haven't completed the program (demand and supply type of deal) or they have too little customers, once more i might be wrong, but i have been through this with Suzuki where a type of clutch mod that can be bought from them doesn't come factory, even tho they give you all the necessary stuff even a print 1/1 for the hole patterns. Rambling aside, nice bike, it might not be my style, but i can certainly appreciate that the bike is pretty, and it does sound awesome even in factory pipes. :) May you use it for a long time to come.

i have a engeneering background and this is what made me pass my cert test what this guy in my apprentice told me. Turn on your brain and think things thru from start to finish, do not start! unless you know every move you are going to take till you finished manufacturing the component on your plan in your head. And he was Right you start machining something from the wrong side you cant finish the thing as you can no longer clamp it in a vice or the lathe chuck. I had to write the above to give a idea why i would have done this step i am going to tell... i would have done different. I look at stuff like the threads studs what angle they have of the stuff bolted on to it and in my mind i am machine them holes with a drill befor i start. its kind of similar to electronic diagnostic you teach Mr danner, i would also have figured if you could not almost finish the drilling from the inside or not. I go why do they want the thing to be drilled from inside? then outside what is there reason on the instruction, Is there one? or is it just a pen-pusher whom wrote the distructions...... etc Reason why i gave up engeneering to me its extreem stresfull when you f...k up its over but a rusty stuck bolt for example is a challange to open it is already a f...up that one has to now fix. you can fix them f-ups you start again if you f---k up in machining something gone wrong!! all the time till the f-up is gone if you do so , extreem stressfull in my opinion, not so much in c.n.c but i did learn the old fation way propper machining by hand still My first repair with My pico was a coil on a 6 clinder kawasaki . i found after 6h one coil was wrong connected +- the moron electrition mate told him it wont matter how you connect a coil. And the reason it was conected wrong was 3 coils and 1 of them had plus and minus not on the same side,! I mesurd the harness done a voltage drop test with dan sullivans load pro leads said! power and ground is fine to all coils but that coil is connected wrong buddy!! look at the coil here is our positive wire going to the negative on the coil. Put another good coil connecded it propperly and the thing fired on all pots again. coil had spade connectors and no wiring diagramm.(The thing sometimes ran on all pots with coil wrong ) ...then coughed and splutterd and stalled.

I like the way yours looks and all, but I just prefer to be able to remove it if I dont need it. Also it's pretty low. is the seat removable?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 жыл бұрын
which seat? I don't think you would want to remove the passenger seat. It keeps you planted in the drivers seat when accelerating. Without it you would slide off the rear of the bike! Trust me, I know

+ScannerDanner I have a vrod also. I wife wants the backrest, and I don't really like the look of it. So can I remove it when she isn't on? And then put it on quickly when she does?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 жыл бұрын
No. This one is permanent. You can remove it but you'll have holes in your rear fender. They make ones that are remove able but when you read the fine print they say "for looks only!". I would NOT recommend those for your wife. Her life depends on it.

no it was an actual question not for the "model" of the bike. I have a 2009 Vrod Muscle and I call it "Penny"

Seeing the struggle pains me. I guess motorcycle designers and engineers hate their mechanics as much as the ones in the auto industry. How they come up with these wacky assembly schemes makes my arthritis flare up. Technology still has not made working on machines any easier.

oh man, what you doing is very elementary, you said you are an auto mechanic so how come you dont even know to drill a hole & to even screw it right, and you are saying you have more than 20years of work experience, ok yaaa i know

I showed my mistake. Did it help you? I'm sure it helped others. Watch my other videos, I'm not a fraud lol. I don’t do this type of work. Easy mistake to make.

you sure don't know how to follow directions. If you would of drilled the holes straight down you would not have the problems. I did mine in less than 30min.
