I vote for an engine rebuild. Orangy (sp?) is an icon of your channel and has all the battle scars and character to prove it. You have had so many adventures with her, that a rebuild is justified. 200K on a Jeep Wrangler with the Pentastar V6 is a remarkable feat in of itself with the hard life she has been through. So many Jeep Rubicons I see that never leave the pavement tasked with being nothing more challenging than a “grocery-getter”. Chris, you have put Orangy into doing what she was designed to do and in doing so, created a character that is integral to you and your content. Don’t get me wrong, your video photography is fantastic but you need Orangy as part of the adventure. Just my thoughts. Cheers.

Chris doesn't even know if he needs a fresh motor. It could be something as simple as a bad ground wire. I'd fix whats wrong, buy myself some time and do a complete diagnostic including dropping the pan to look at a couple of bearings. I'd keep my eye out for low mileage motor and trans out of a wreck at my own pace. Then I'd go thru the orginal motor and trans to have a spare in storage crated up and ready to ship. Rebuilds can be a crap shoot unless you find a good machine shop thats willing to put in the time with good parts. Then your fine and can make them better than factory. Most of the time the sky isn't falling and be leary of people who say it is. Bet the compression is fine and its just an electrical issue or a sloppy chain. One thing I wouldn't do is buy a new rig right now.

If you keep the Jeep, put a new factory long block in as they come complete with new heads (a factory built crate engine). There's not a lot of skilled and talented mechanics out there who rebuild engines every day therefore they have limited experience. Plus, if you get a factory engine, the warranty will be good wherever you go and you won't have to rely on returning the Jeep to the rebuilder if you need to rely on the warranty.

It's fantastic you are including more of Shannon in those videos, and also behind the scenes and bloopers of your filming!!! Fantastic! You 2 have a great dynamic together! Awesome couple. Cinematography is still as solid as ever. I hope you find a solution with the Jeep, do what it takes to fix it!! It's the pillar of your show!! I was following another channel of a guy that was going around Africa with a Jeep, he changed to a gladiator. His channel lost IMO the essence of his exploration channel. It's all about how he is building it and so on and so on... Like he is promoting gear companies and keep gladiator. Hope you keep Orangy and keep exploring!!!!! All those shots of where you and Orangie have been together, just epic! I imagine it would be very hard to let it go and no doubt most your viewers would miss seeing Orangie on your future adventures. If you do decide its time to retire Orangie, a 2-door Jeep option seems like a good alternative now that you have the van as well. With the two door you can still explore remote areas that big vans and SUV’s could not go, and maybe even trailer it behind your van when you guys are traveling together on the road. Opposite of a small 2-door, a Jeep Gladiator with an Alu-Cab or Expedition Driven Camper might be another great option for more comfort in the remote areas. Whatever you choose, hopefully you stay with Jeep, it has a nostalgic and heroic history that no other SUV even comes close to.

Though we did lose reverse after only a week, Jasper took care of it and we’ve been going strong ever since’, over 3 years now. Chris’s videography has improved immensely over the 5 or so years he’s been filming, wouldn’t you agree? When he talks about “trying to be creative” with his shot at the beginning of the video, I start wondering about what that’s like for the two of them. Chris has been doing this for years now, and has developed a certain process/flow. Now introduce another human with their own thoughts and will, it’s interesting to see how they negotiate living together (of course, we’re not getting the behind the scenes action, but…). All that aside, I am happy for Chris, for them, that they have found each other, and can share these adventures together. I know some folks (guys in particular) who were disappointed at the way the channel is evolving - they liked Chris doing this alone. Humans are a social species. We are at our best and our strongest when we cooperate together, live together, work together. That’s how our hunter/gatherer ancestors survived in the past, and how we got here today. At any rate, I have a renewed interest in the channel - how do Chris and Shannon make this partnership work….

And, I don’t have to gag at the things Chris “cooks” for meals, lol.
@dmwi15493 жыл бұрын
I know Chris doesn’t normally read comments but…for the parts and labor cost of a block replacement-if you plan to keep the Jeep-you may consider a complete crate engine. Labor and installation time would be reduced and ALL wiring, sensors, fuel system would be new. It would likely come with a full warranty that any dealer could service during your travels. Remember, this thing was on its side partially submerged at one point. So if the replacement came with a new ECM and major fuses, bonus! Or, contact Cummins. Maybe they’d sponsor a diesel crate swap. That way you could ditch that heater and switch to a diesel fired Espar S2D2 that WORKS in higher elevations. His would allow you to carry a single spare fuel source for both vehicles.

After watching this video, and the footage of Orangy ... and it would seem I agree with many of the comments. New engine! Look at what it's been through all those years, it's amazing what it has accomplished, and seem to always get you home. Cuz how I see it ... what's an engine cost down there, installed? And how much does a new rig cost? Then you need to do all kinds of other mods to the new vehicle on top of that price. All you really could use off Orangy is the winch. So the price of a new vehicle, then lift and tires, sleeping arrangement? Thinking a new engine is gonna be waaay cheaper then a new vehicle (that's a bit of sarcasm in that statement). And wow, the stuff the Jeep just cruises on through ... pretty proven platform.
