OK4WD mechanics ...kudos to those guys! I think another commentor mentioned "range anxiety" and I experienced the same on several of your adventures. My dad was notorious for letting the fuel level run down to the very edge of the E on the gauge. He actually did on a trip to Philly, running out of gas on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He had to walk five miles to a gas station and he lucked out that a PA trooper gave him a ride back to the car. Now I won't be concerned for you. New auxiliary tank, new rubber and some new parts should keep you on the trails and us entertained.

Good decision to install a auxiliary tank. For an overladen this is mandatory - my opinion. In Europe lots of overlanders drive because of this situation the Toyota HZJ78, which carries 180 l fuel (nearly 50 gal.) in both tanks, which allows to drive up to 1800km (1200 miles) without a tank stop.

That is a nice looking aux gas tank. If only they had fabricated it to sit above the lower portion of the frame. But it should be okay with overlanding type trails. The new tank and plumbing might have stirred up some crap in the old tank, causing that stalling you mentioned. Anyway, you may want to think about changing the fuel filter if it keeps stalling as that is one symptom of a clogged fuel filter. It's part of the fuel pump assy in the factory tank, so it may be a pain to drop the factory tank to change out the fuel filter. Hopefully it will clear up on its own. Good luck!

A tip for the recovery tracks. Connect them to one another with thin steel cables (I like stainless) and small shackles or carabiners for easy clipping on and off, then connect the rear ones to some place in the car, also with thin wire cables and small carabiners. This way, if you are in a nasty, gnarly muddy terrain, you simply drag them along to a more civilised road area where they can be easily recovered, instead of having to hike back, and dig them up from deep in the mud.

I could'a been first, but I didn't have anything to say at the moment...lol Great video, new things is one of the best reasons to have a vehicle. The new tank idea is great, but now it's sputtering. A lot of vehicles these days with Emissions systems, the fuel cell has to be pressurized. By adding the second tank, the system may lose pressure if it can backflow into the second tank. To correct that, a manual brass fuel line shutoff valve will need to be installed between the two tanks.

BFG All Terrains ...uhg! BFG's aren't know for great wear , 35K isn't very good. The other reason I don't care for them is my son had a set on a F150 ,every time he took it on a logging road here In Washington he would put a rock through the face of one . After the shop re placed the third one (under warranty for free) at about 25K he had them pro rate him a set of Toyos, end of problem. I've had a lot better luck with Goodyear for mileage, although i am currently trying a set of Dick Cepek's on my Wrangler. That extra fuel tank looks trick, I'll have to check them out and see if they have anything for a Jeep YJ. Good adventures and ale care.

Very cool and smart upgrade for your kind of travel. Knowing that this tank will, in fact, allow you to get further and further from civilization I would highly suggest adding a few spares to your redundancy kit. First and foremost would be to order a backup electric transfer pump. That new tank will be rendered useless if/when the electric pump takes a dive on you in the middle of nowhere. Second would be some hoses of various diameters for punctures or leaks. Slip each hose into each other and then just zip tie the whole lot somewhere out of the way until needed. Finally, a handful of hose clamps varying in sizes/diameters.
@jeep62425 жыл бұрын
There looked like there was a big drain plug on the bottom. It would be pretty easy to drain fuel off in an emergency.
@insaynbcr5 жыл бұрын

Auxiliary fuel tanks are subject to California's anti-tampering laws. Installation of auxiliary fuel tanks on emission controlled vehicles is prohibited unless the auxiliary fuel tanks have been evaluated and certified by the Air Resources Board. Think I’ll stick with the two 3 gallon Rotopax I mounted on my Smittybilt tire carrier I installed myself with slightly modified installation. Smittybilt says limit to 2 gallon Rotopax but I am not carrying the oversize tire and mounted the Rotopax with minimal eccentricity.
@Bmpaul025 жыл бұрын
Do they look for that at emissions?

@andrewevanoff11925 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the new system has an overflow protection device to keep the main tank from getting overfilled from the secondary tank. Getting the fuel level all the way to the top will push too much fuel into the Evap system. This can cause performance issues, charcoal tank saturation and Evap system failure.

your electronic sway bar device in the front. I don't see you seal it. Boaters use some sort of silicone goop to seal their seacocks etc from leaking. I think that is your issue. That goop would keep the water from getting in to foul that spring. Just a thought

The fuel tank is a pretty great mod and I am excited to see what exploring it will allow in the future. I gotta say though BFG all terrains I feel are a kind of overrated tire. I also don't understand why with all the off roading you do you don't have a mud tire or hybrid tire. You are so often in situations where you would benefit from a mud tire. I have not really come across someone who has ditched BFG AT's for something else reputable that was more aggressive and regretted it. The off road advantage is obvious but what may not be is most of the time wet pavement traction also winds up being better to. In my case I ditched BFG AT's for Cooper ST MAXX and literally every metric is better. They are actually quieter at highway speeds too but the wet pavement traction is just so much better it's hard to believe. My BFG's were cut and chunked up pretty bad too. I have taken the Coopers back on the same trails and worse and there is barely a mark on them. Highway manners from MI to Central Mexico were no problem as well. I would not be afraid to experiment with something else next time and really of all rigs you should have something better than AT's on it. As always love the content. Often the highlight of my week.

Watched your video and became very interested in the idea of an extra fuel tank so I called long range America and when I first called them I got the tech support line and that guy couldn't answer a simple question so he told me I would have to call back and ask for the sales dept. I wondered why couldn't just transfer me. lol what a joke this place is. So I called back and spoke to Ward Harris in sales. I quickly found that Mr. Harris was clueless and couldn't answer the simplest of questions about his product i.e. gas tanks. I was interested in a smaller size so when I asked about a smaller one he replied why buy smaller if you don't go big why buy one at all, I was baffled at his answer. Plus when he asked if I had a four door and a 2 door Jeep I replied it's a unlimited then he said I don't want to know what you call it, is it 2 or 4 door and I said it's a unlimited which is a 4 door then he wanted to argue with me about it and I told him that's not my made up description that what the manufacturer calls it, unlimited is 4 door lol. This company is really screwed up and they don't know simple product info. I'm sure the product is a good one but the people here are just plain useless.
