A degree or two of -camber improves grip in the corners, as the wheel leans over with the forces, and lays its entire width on the road, instead of just the outside edge. A bit of toe out on the front wheels helps the car get more angle, and slamming it lowers the CoG. It's all about performance. Plus it looks good.

Nice ride, there is a good reason why LS swaps into everything is common. first to understand this many people who know nothing about the legendary SBC need to know that its a extremely compact motor (doesn't take up much more space then a small I-4 engine) and it is a very light motor. Lighter then many modern DOHC all aluminum V-6 engines that are used. Then you have to understand that you can get them for super cheap and it has a insane aftermarket supported by 100,000,000+ engines made.

They are. It's just a different way of producing power. A supercharger too, is part of the engine. There is a reason for the N/A and T/C versions of the 2JZ.. Money. The N/A version went in the cheaper models. Both though, are splendid engines. It's not lack of familiarity that got me, (I maintain my own V12 Jag, which is far more complex, and my '72 V8 Land Rover, which is near enough the same as an LS) it was the sheer number and variety of faults that I hated.

The Rover V8 block is based on a Buick block. The engine is almost entirely different. Funny how one of the best and most popular V8s of all time, was found, by a Brit, abandoned by America as too small and too complex.

You can go to a wrecker and find an old wrecked camaro (1998-2002) and pull the engine, rebuild it and make some insane amounts of power for very cheap. For $5,000 you can get the LS1 NA up to 500BHP without the issues of turbocharging (remember this is a non VVT engine). These are just some of the reason why LS swaps are so common, you find them in Honda S2000, Mazda RX7, Mazda Miata, etc...... Porsche 911s.....

Of course, a Ferrari 430 or F40 (I loooove the F40) sounds better than any 4 pot I've ever heard, but then, most Americans 'hate' the F40. The Mclaren Mercedes SLR sounded fab, a proper dirty growl, and the Morgan Aero 8 is rather lovely too, a very crisp note, but, I've found more I4s and I6s that sound better than more V8s. I usually hate Corvettes, I loathed my C5, but I heard one the other week that had been cammed, and revved to 8500, it sounded amazing in the upper reaches, crap low down.

The LS Engines are dumb reliable and make big power and stay hugely reliable. It's an awesome engine, yes it's a little outdated, pushrod head assembly. But remember back in the day the firebreathing 302 Z28 First Gen Camaro? It was a 8k rpm redline v8 beast that dominated the trans am series. Hopefully the next gen of GM motors will be 4v DOHC, HIGH TORQUE HP and RPM.

They don't want to squeeze every inch of power out of the motor because that creates problems with reliability. And the motor is untouched with just a supercharger, if they wanted to build it, they could get 650+ rwhp down and still be semi-reliable, but this suits the drivers purposes.

@xcalic3600 uhhh you mean a 4 cylinder used to be. The 240 never came with a inline 6 or v6. There is a lot of custom work to be done. Or you can buy kits that have mounts, cross members etc already made up. May need to beat the tranny tunnel a little bit. Do research.

Depends on where you live sir. As Conaghan has said... getting an LS engine is fairly easy and cheap here in america. Parts for LS engines are also cheap as Chevy put them in everything they had. Your aftermarket and our aftermarket are completely different. An MOST LS engine make 500hp on H/C/I combos. The 1jz or KA won't come close without a FI set up.

You said that the SR was rubbish, I was pointing out that, given the same displacement, a V8 would be equally rubbish. If I keep it sub 2500rpm, the turbo's barely doing anything, and, cruising, it gets 38mpg. Very long 5th. Depends what you mean by better. When drifting, I find a very flat power curve to be more difficult, because you can't vary power much by revs. Once you've got the turbo on boost it's easily predicatable, just so long as you keep it there. 3 Jags, a Landy and a dead 180SX

Tellin' ya' the truth I only fancy V8's because of the sound. The only sound that can rival a v8's is an inline 6 at low RPM's. But the root of all this goes back to me jus' wanting a car that is faster than the other guy's but it'll be nice to scare a few when I overtake with that V8 noise "Rrrrraaaaawwww!!!". I think I'll jus' go for a 2JZ or RB25DET. Don't get me wrong, Sr's sound awesome but they lack that roar.

I've driven enough, and seen enough dyno readouts to know what I'm on about. Jaguars are very high quality vehicles, you are obviously stuck in 1976 when BL and Thatcher were ruining everything. Just look at the new XF, great looking, fast, even in dieselly form, rides beautifully, handles far better than a car that size should, is cheaper than its rivals, is better than its rivals, and has an annoyingly slow depreciation curve. I want one. One of only about three current cars I would buy.

@BullRider74023 Dude, a fully dressed LS6 with man tran is less that 500lbs an SR20 with the same setup is 477lbs and remember the SR20 is lighter than a KA24 by 30 or so lbs. This is why the LSX swap is becoming more common, less weight than the stock motor with much better power/powerband and more potential at all stages.

Most definitely, however maybe you don't understand that it's not really that cheap to drop an engine in a different make car. Of course you can give me quick prices, engine/box 2k, mounts 300, loom 300 bits and pieces all up 3k, then add up all the things you missed in your initial calculations and you end up with a 10k bill. Some people don't have the means or more importantly the need for such a car, so a mildly worked and well balanced 4cyl will still rape on the track.
@TheWierdFish
@TheWierdFish 12 жыл бұрын
No, you're right, An SR20 won't make 450hp. But nor would a 2.0 litre V8. No, You need what, 5-6 litres to make that much power. Plus, when I kept it off boost, I got 35-38mpg out of my little CA18DET powered 180SX, and 350bhp when I wanted to drift it. In adittion when you are on boost, the power curve is beautifully linear anyway, giving you, if anything, more control than the flatter curves of the big V8s. Plus, they're easier and cheaper to mend, and the sound actually suits the car.
@TheWierdFish
@TheWierdFish 12 жыл бұрын
Nah man, the SR20DET is a cracking engine. For the cost fo a 350bhp V8 engine, you could mod the SR to 5-600bhp.
@TheWierdFish
@TheWierdFish 12 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's two litres, which is big for a 4 banger, plus the turbo. It's a lot of work to do that, but not as much a removing the SR, then buying and re installing a V8, that you'd then have to modify anyway. Bigger Turbo, intercooler, re-map, bigger valves, agressive cam, forged internals (won't help bhp, but it's peace of mind, 600hp is alot) People have got 8-900 bhp from engines of this size, those people are idiots, but they did it. Besides, you only really ever need 450bhp at the most.

The cheap Chevy parts are a dime a dozen. You get into the LS engines, it gets expensive quick. Not saying they're not good engines, but damn they're expensive. I'd rather just get a 5.0 out of a mustang or thunderbird, but I wouldn't use the T-5 they came with though they definitely suck no question about it lol. The 5.0 swap is just so much more affordable for pretty much the same result and it also has a lot of room for upgrades and is a VERY STRONG PLATFORM for racing, just my 2 cents :)

The UK has a 3 litre V10 that gets over 800hp. Cosworth CK. From just three litres... and it can spin at well over 10K rpm safely like most of their other engines. Problem with that is price. Every single component is hand polished to a mirror finish and the whole engine is assembled manually, built for Formula 1. Americans need to get away from the obsession with big engines + bolt-ons.

Yes, but if I can use a 4 litre inline six, and make nearly the same power as a 7 litre V8, I'll also use less fuel, have a lighter more reliable engine (because there's simply less to go wrong) and it'll make a better noise. What's the point in 'potential'. Potential does nothing for performance, potential is just wasted space. The other plus side of a smaller, more specifically powerful engine is that it fits in a smaller space/ is lighter, which is good for acceleration, handling and braking.

Americans are far more focused on torque and easy power, if they really wanted to engineer a great engine I believe they could but for the most etc. etc. it is one of the most versatile motors used from Trucks to Saloon cars. They are not idiots, they just choose to focus on different elements than Europeans. It's a difference of cultures, not one person is superior and the other is an idiot. And also In every junkyard in america is a LSX based motor, so it's easy

Insane aftermarket support that leaves you spending three days and 400miles looking for one small bit of the ignition system for a C5 'Vette. Yeah, that's really great, isn't it. (Clue; No, it isn't) Plus, if you don't happen to live right on top of one, they do actually cost an absolute bomb to buy. £3-4000. That's the cost of importing an entire, mint, S14 from Japan. Why do you think there are so many made? Because they die far too quickly.
