There was a girl I went to school with that lived right down the street from me in St Louis and her father used to restore Austin Healey's in their garage one particular afternoon while we were walking home her dad was out working on one of these cars and had it outside running I knew the minute I heard it run and him revving it up that it did not have a traditional Healey engine in it, so I walked across the street and was talking to him about it and he said that it was a Ford small block V8 289 and that it had a top loader four speed and a Ford 9-in rear end in it he said that it was one of Carol Shelby's experiments... I don't know much about Austin healys but I know they didn't come with Ford V8s and he told me at that time that this was one of the predecessors to the cobra Carol Shelby was looking for small lightweight cars hence the AC austin-healeys and I think sunbeams.. don't quote me on that but I know he experimented with several cars in that genre...the only one I've ever seen other than this one that had a V8 in it and that was 40 years ago.. I was just a kid in junior high school walking home.. pretty cool..

Woah your story reminds me of what brought me to this video. The teenage girl who lived 4 houses west of me who was my friend came running down the street to my house and said “Dave I got the Healey!” No shit scared the hell out of me I didn’t know what the heck she was talking about, thought it was a disease. Turns out when she took me down to her house there was a Austin Healey in the garage that her father had bought and was going to restore with her. Looked like this one in the video but the engine was a factory one. Been a long time but I think it was a straight 6 with 3 small carburetors on top. Many a straight 4 with 2 carbs 40 years I’m not sure. But that’s why When I seen the title of this video I had to check it out. BTW I think she sold it before her dad and her restored it. That’s so weird that you posted your story I was thinking you were a neighbor of mine in Phoenix 👍🇺🇸

I guess I’m the first one to write up your latest video. Your diving into the newspapers early in the morning was something my ace pal Brian and I did back in the late 1950’s. We would go to the local liquor store and buy the Sunday Los Angeles Times. This would be late afternoon on a Friday and we would get the “Bull Dog Edition” that’s what it was was called. Here we would find the Sunday car ads and begin tearing through them. Brian picked up a 1940 Deluxe Coupe for $195.00 one weekend. I bought a “newer” 1953 Chevy for $400.00. We thought we were slick. The Times eventually jacked up their ad rates so high they brought about the Recycler, Auto Trader and now we have eBay and Craigslist. Great story thank you, brought back fun memories with car buddy.

Great video ! Back in the early 60's when I was just 16, I helped my neighbor restore a home modified Healy 3000 that had a 289 V8 in it. We'd run around in it until the carb linkage would jam up. Never did work right but man was that a fast car. He ended up selling to someone in Waukesha Wisconsin one day and that's the last I ever saw of it. It was after that I heard all about Shelby's workings that wondered what ever happened to that car. Thanks for the detailed video...brought back some really old memories. This answer will come up with my wife's name...mine is Carl

I remember sitting there at the kitchen table hitting redial hundreds if not thousands of times because other folks were already talking to them about the “prize” or their teenage daughter was talking to her boyfriend for hours on end after school which was normally the case cause up till 3pm it would just ring and ring and ring which usually meant they were at work. I remember chasing a few nice ones for a few weeks up to a month on a couple of those cars before I would finally get someone to answer the phone and let you know if it had been sold yet or if I could go look at it. It definitely used to be a struggle trying to get around to look at em back then and when you finally got in touch with them and made the appointment to go look at the car and it felt like you were finally able to see that hot young girl you’ve been chasing for the past two years in her swimsuit!!! It was an amazing feeling and if you were able to buy it, then it felt like you just went from striking out to hitting a grand slam!!!! Definitely some fond memories but it’s so much easier nowadays!!

In the 1960's and early 70's I owned several 100-6's. I had a steel wheel car with a Chevy 283, a steel wheel car with the Healey six and a wire wheel car with the Healy six. The wire wheel cars had dedicated splined front hubs, but the rear axle used a 5 bolt pattern bolt-on splined hub adapter for the wire wheels. With a wire wheel car, all you had to do was take off the rear adapter and bolt on 1950-60 Buick steel wheels and you had heavy-duty steel wheels on the back. On steel wheel cars the front hubs had a flange with studs instead of splines and used the same 5 bolt pattern. They probably just removed the rear spline adapter and bolted on the steel wheels on this car. That is what I did on mine.

I also bought most of my vehicles out of the newspaper back in 79 till around 93-4. That was fun and bought some great one-owner cars with the history. Use to pay with sight drafts on all of them and drive away with the car 99% of the time. Then I was dealing with 2 large banks on their repos from the mid-'80s till 2015. This took up most of my time where I could not buy out of the paper any longer. Miss those days.
